A Classic Comedy Central Gathering
Twas the night before Christmas…Oh wait wrong story. So the day after Christmas best known for returning allthe unsightly gifts that were given, but this year in the sim its known at Comedy Central’s Te(xas)(fe)sti(val)(specta)cle weekend. Leading off the day’s races is the Classic for three year olds and up going nine furlongs over a fast dirt course with a purse of $125,000. To me the Classic should close out the day, but leading out is just as well, as long as mine finishes first! A field of six classy horses and a horse entered by CMD has assembled for the big race.
Leading off the field is nycaveavenger’s Californian bred Nite Ironman, a three year old colt by Ironman Dehere, out of Our Nite, a Tabasco Cat mare. In fourteen starts Ironman has won three times, place five times and finished third twice earning him a bankrollof over $117k. He comes into this race off of a nice allowance win going half of a furlong shorter. At 6/1 I’ll pass on the Ironman as a few back in another restricted owner race he failed to hit the board. Anyway a true Ironman could win at all distances, and on any surface, no turf wins here, and yes I know this is a dirt race!
Trotting out second in the parade is abcd2’s Turkish bred three year old Lazer. Lazer is by Mountain Cat out of Big Baby, an Aptitude mare. In twenty starts he has accumulated six wins, one place and a show with over $73k in the bank. A former claimer turned allowance winner loves to run long distance, and may find today’s distance of nine furlongs too short for him to get involved in the race. Lazer comes in off of a less than laser sharp allowance performance last time out. Coming off of a short rest I doubt this 8/1 shot will be sharp enough to be in contention.
The third horse, cmd2001’s Kentucky bred three year old colt Pit Of Despair looks desperate for a win. The three year old is by Unbridled’s Song out of a Blushing Groom mare, was bred by mardigras, which makes more sense than thinking that cmd would have bred this horse on his own! In twenty one starts this three year old has three wins, and four places and shows, earning just over $91k. Despair prefers dirt sprints, and this is a dirt route, wonder if cmd forgot how to read again. This 7/1 shot’s only start at this distance had him walking under the wire, something that won’t win a race here today!
The second choice is breaking from post four, well unless that payoff I gave the starter works, then he won’t be starting with the rest of the field. Back on topic, vanilla2 sends out the five year old Japanese bred Second Sight. Sight is by T.M. Opera out of Port Special, a Danzig mare. With thirty five starts he has won ten times, placed four and shown twice, earning almost $285k. This is the horse that I fear most, and an astonished that Squirrel aka vanilla would even enter against my horse which she also bred. Typically liking a little bit longer of a race, its not out of the question for this 9/5 choice to be in the mix, possibly winning the race. He could be on or off the pace, where as the other entries so far come from behind he could kick free early and make everyone else try to catch him. But there is another speed horse in this race that could either give him a run for his money, or just knock them both out of the money!!
Fifth in the gate will be psyduck215’s six year old Turn Him Loose. Loose is a son of Roar out of Twoleftturns an El Prado mare. In thirty one starts this veteran has won seven times, while finishing second six, and third another seven times, earning just over $95k. Loose boasts an impressive win resume, but upon inspection he has been running in claiming and starter races most of 2009. Also against him is the fact that he goes to the front. With two other speedsters, he is unlikely to get the lead that he needs. At 18/1 the jock does need to just Turn Him Loose and see what happens.
Breaking from the sixth position is the favorite of the race, and of course my favorite horse. Running for the stable of revlis is the four year old Kentucky bred Very Merry. A son of Awesome Again, out of a Private Account mare, he is lightly run with just ten starts, and has four wins and three seconds. Bred by diabolical Very Merry has done little wrong. He showed first time out that he didn’t like to sprint, and won the following time easily going a route. A grade three placed runner, he has never gone nine furlongs, but looks likehe may be able to get the distance. The 8/5 favorite’s main problem is he’s a speed horse, and will not likely get out on the lead alone, and may duel himself info the ground. Some people may say he’s crying for distance, I’m not so sure myself. At 8/5 hopefully he gets the distance and gets his first stakes win, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him second or third.
Rounding out the field is nightcap’s three year old Kentucky bred colt Colac Marathon Man. Colac is a son of Medaglia D’oro out of a Le Fabuleux mare with sixteen starts, four wins and five places, earning over $156k. Colac broke his maiden at this distance earlier this year, but has preferred the mile to mile and a sixteenth distance since. He should be up there with Very Merry, and Second Sight vying for the lead. He’s a veteran of restricted races, switching from Blazing Saddles over to Comedy Central, most likely thinking he’d find softer competition, but the older horses in this race pose a threat. At 8/1 he comes into the race on a losing streak and will have a hard time matching speeds with the elders of the race.
There are all seven horses, the field is divided with three year olds and older horses. Many of the three year olds come into the race being mainly run in 2009, which is fine and dandy, heck Very Merry has only run as a four year old, but has the least amount of time spent in the gate. As 2009 comes to a close I believe that freshness will play a key. I’m not going to pick horses to win, so good luck to all may your horses run their best and return home safely!!
