Belle of the Turf
Beyond the Wire
Where Every Race Has a Story.
Who Will Be the Belle of the Turf?
The world’s best sophomore turf fillies are heading to the Normandy coast as Deauville hosts the Grade 1 Belle of the Turf, a six-furlong dash where brilliance matters more than stamina. There is no time to recover from a poor start, no chance to make up ten lengths in the stretch. From the moment the gates spring open, it’s a sprint for racing immortality.
This year’s edition brings together a fascinating blend of proven Grade 1 winners, rising stars, and lightly raced fillies whose best days may still be ahead. Australia, Ireland, Great Britain, and Kentucky are all represented in a truly international field where every entrant has earned the right to be here.
Some will blast to the front. Others will bide their time before launching a furious late rally. By the time the field flashes past the Deauville grandstand, only one filly will leave France wearing the crown as this year’s Belle of the Turf.
The Field
#1 Wavecave (13/1)
Owner: veeman35
Nickname: The Tide
Breeding: Blue Point (IRE) × Wootton Bassett (GB) × Galileo (IRE)
Running Style: Front Runner
Wavecave has done almost everything asked of her, winning four of seven starts while never tasting defeat at today’s six-furlong trip. Her recent victory in the G3 Señora Stakes produced a career-best 96 speed figure, confirming that she continues to improve with every appearance. Drawn on the rail, she’ll almost certainly be among the first to show speed, attempting to dictate terms from the outset. Her European turf pedigree fits this race perfectly, and another forward move would put her squarely in contention.
Beyond the Wire: If she secures an uncontested lead, the rest of this field could be chasing the tide all the way home.
#2 I’m Going To Get This (11/1)
Owner: corza10
Nickname: The Dream Chaser
Breeding: Hellbent (AUS) × Zabeel × Danehill Dancer
Running Style: Early Speed / Pace Presser
Three victories in seven starts don’t tell the whole story. This Australian-bred filly has steadily climbed the class ladder, capturing the Johanna Turf Filly Sprint before stepping into Grade 1 company in the Crown Stakes. She finished ninth there, but that experience may prove valuable against another elite field. She possesses tactical speed that allows her to stay within striking distance throughout the race, and a cleaner trip could make her much more dangerous than her morning line suggests.
Beyond the Wire: She hasn’t reached the summit yet—but every great climb begins with believing you belong.
#3 Crown and Sword (8/1)
Owner: bestobene5
Nickname: The Queen’s Blade
Breeding: Naval Crown × Forest Wildcat × Kingmambo
Running Style: Stalker
Already a Grade 1 winner, Crown and Sword brings one of the strongest résumés into Deauville. She owns five wins from twelve starts and has consistently competed against top-level company throughout her career. Her preferred style is to settle just behind the leaders before unleashing her run turning for home. That versatility could prove invaluable if the early fractions become demanding. She’s already shown she belongs on racing’s biggest stages.
Beyond the Wire: Champions don’t need the lead—they simply need an opening.
#4 Niagara Life (8/1)
Owner: jwest24
Nickname: The Falls
Breeding: Exceedance (GB) × Wootton Bassett (GB) × Snitzel
Running Style: Stalker
One of the hottest fillies entering this race, Niagara Life exploded to a 100 speed figure while winning impressively in Germany. Four wins from eight starts suggest remarkable consistency, and every recent effort has hinted that another breakthrough may be coming. She doesn’t need the lead but never lets the pace get away from her, making her one of the most tactically flexible runners in the field.
Beyond the Wire: Momentum is a powerful thing—and Niagara Life may be bringing the biggest wave into France.
#5 Flaming Witness (11/1)
Owner: acarigua13
Nickname: The Torch
Breeding: Star Witness × Ruler of the World × Kodiac (GB)
Running Style: Front Runner
Few fillies arrive with a richer résumé, earning over $524,000 while winning four races. She has repeatedly tested herself against the best, including appearances in the 1000 Guineas and multiple graded stakes. At six furlongs she prefers to be involved immediately, daring the field to catch her. If left alone through the opening quarter-mile, she becomes exceptionally dangerous.
Beyond the Wire: When The Torch gets loose early, somebody has to extinguish the fire.
#6 Eruption Cap (11/1)
Owner: waitandsee
Nickname: The Volcano
Breeding: Pinatubo × Frankel (GB) × Seattle Slew
Running Style: Closer
Another filly with more than $524,000 in earnings, Eruption Cap has faced Grade 1 company throughout her career. Her best weapon is patience. She prefers to settle well behind the speed before making one sustained late charge through the stretch. If the early pace turns blistering, few runners possess a stronger closing punch.
Beyond the Wire: Volcanoes are quiet—until they aren’t.
#7 Picking Your Fight (14/1)
Owner: corky
Nickname: The Challenger
Breeding: Street Sense × Galileo (IRE) × Redoute’s Choice
Running Style: Front Runner
This filly has shown excellent gate speed throughout her career and owns victories in the Rose Petal Sprint and Playing Games Stakes. She’ll likely be among the early leaders once again, hoping to take advantage of her natural speed before the closers begin their rally. At longer odds, she’s one capable of making this race interesting.
Beyond the Wire: Sometimes the biggest fight belongs to the horse no one expects.
#8 Peregrine Bugle (7/1)
Owner: ormax
Nickname: The Bugler
Breeding: Shaquille × Ghostzapper × Giant’s Causeway
Running Style: Stalker
Five victories from eight starts and a sparkling 103 speed figure make Peregrine Bugle one of the most dangerous fillies in this field. She owns a devastating turn of foot and has proven she can finish strongly after sitting just off the pace. Her recent G3 Mermaid Sprint victory suggested she’s peaking at exactly the right time.
Beyond the Wire: When the Bugler sounds, everyone else had better be ready.
#9 Galiyam Abyss (8/1)
Owner: mfjockeyclubgc
Nickname: The Shadow
Breeding: I Am Invincible × Galileo (IRE) × Dansili (GB)
Running Style: Closer
Despite only six career starts, she’s already won four and has shown the ability to finish with authority. Her victory in the G2 Shades of Speed Stakes demonstrated that patience can be rewarded. She’ll likely trail early before trying to mow down tiring rivals inside the final furlong.
Beyond the Wire: The Shadow doesn’t appear until the leaders begin to fade.
#10 Only Her (13/1)
Owner: mufamig
Nickname: The One
Breeding: Mehmas × Invincible Spirit (IRE) × Rahy
Running Style: Front Runner
Only Her has won three of seven starts and loves sprint distances. She typically breaks sharply and races aggressively from the opening strides. While she faces her toughest assignment yet, her early foot could allow her to secure ideal position before the field reaches top speed.
Beyond the Wire: Speed can be the ultimate equalizer over six furlongs.
#11 Chief Havoc (22/1)
Owner: chips9
Nickname: The Longshot
Breeding: Zoustar × Storm Cat × Seeking the Gold
Running Style: Mid-Pack Closer
The morning-line outsider has quietly earned two victories while consistently picking up checks. She rarely beats herself and generally produces an honest late run. Although she’ll need significant improvement to upset this field, stranger things have happened in international turf sprints.
Beyond the Wire: Every Cinderella story starts with someone overlooking the invitation.
#12 Diamond Showers (11/1)
Owner: jtlracing
Nickname: The Jewel
Breeding: Too Darn Hot (GB) × Dark Angel (IRE) × Redoute’s Choice
Running Style: Stalker
Diamond Showers rebounded beautifully after a disappointing Crown Stakes effort by capturing the G2 Twitch and Twirl Sprint. Three wins from seven starts highlight her consistency, and she has enough tactical speed to stay close before launching her bid in upper stretch.
Beyond the Wire: Polished performances often follow rough lessons.
#13 Amon Ereb (9/1)
Owner: eminc5
Nickname: The Pharaoh
Breeding: Wootton Bassett (GB) × Giant’s Causeway × Galileo (IRE)
Running Style: Stalker
Amon Ereb already owns valuable Grade 1 experience, including a strong third in the Japanese 1000 Guineas. Four wins from eight starts prove she’s more than capable, and her tactical style allows her to adapt to almost any pace scenario. If the favorites falter, she’s one of the first names worth considering.
Beyond the Wire: She’s already stood among royalty—now she’s chasing the crown.
#14 Haha Jolly Joker (8/1)
Owner: derbyking
Nickname: The Entertainer
Breeding: Union Rags × King Kamehameha × Empire Maker
Running Style: Pace Presser
With 19 career starts, Haha Jolly Joker is by far the most experienced filly in the field. She’s battled elite company across several countries and has never backed down from a challenge. Her tactical speed keeps her within striking distance throughout, and that experience could prove invaluable if this race turns chaotic.
Beyond the Wire: Experience doesn’t guarantee victory—but it often knows where the finish line is.
Race Shape
Expect Wavecave, Flaming Witness, Picking Your Fight, and Only Her to flash early speed and contest the lead from the opening strides. Crown and Sword, Niagara Life, Peregrine Bugle, Diamond Showers, and Amon Ereb should enjoy ideal stalking trips just behind the pace, waiting to pounce as the leaders begin to tire. If the early fractions become too aggressive, look for closers Eruption Cap and Galiyam Abyss to come flying down the center of the course late.
Horses to Watch
🏆 Most Likely Winner: Peregrine Bugle (#8)
🌟 Best Value: Niagara Life (#4)
💥 Live Longshot: Wavecave (#1)
🚀 Best Late Kick: Eruption Cap (#6)
