Grease Fire at Seven Furlongs: The Humane Distaff Looks Ready to Fry
The Humane Distaff brings together fourteen older fillies and mares for a $750,000 Grade 1 dash at seven furlongs on a fast dirt strip, and the shape of it looks deliciously reckless. The pace has enough grease in it to set off a smoke alarm, while the back half of the field is packed with stalkers and closers ready to stroll in late and steal the whole plate. Race #3671978
Race Breakdown
Seven furlongs is the perfect lazy-person distance: too sharp to coast, too long to fake it, and just cruel enough to expose anybody who goes out like they inhaled a basket of chili fries before the bell. DYTHENTIC, LEAVING HOME, WITCH BOLT, and AGE OF BUGLE all have enough early lick to keep the opening quarter honest, so the best stalkers should be licking their fingers by the turn. That points straight at runners like HA SEONG, SASSY HAACK, and CK MOSH PRINCE, all of whom do their best work once the front end starts feeling heavy.
If this bunch cooks each other through the first half-mile, the late kickers are going to roll up to the wire like it is the last tray at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Post Parade
PP 1 – LUFTHIFY
Representing newmarket, this daughter of Justify gets the rail and a very welcome cutback to seven furlongs, the same trip that produced her 114-speed Grade 1 win in the Everclear. Her Sand Storm twelfth was the racing equivalent of dropping your nachos face-down on the carpet, but the broader record says she belongs with this crowd when she can stalk instead of chase. Q Rein does not bring a red-hot recent strike rate, yet the mare herself has enough back class to make the inside draw a real weapon if she saves ground and waits.
PP 2 – DYTHENTIC
From amir1605, DYTHENTIC is the one most likely to throw the first punch and keep throwing it. She is by Authentic out of a Seattle Slew line, she nearly stole a Grade 3 sprint last time with a 112 figure, and her running lines are basically neon signs screaming catch me if you can. The problem is that this jump back into Grade 1 company feels like reaching for a second deep-fried sandwich when the first one already had consequences; she can absolutely matter, but she is going to have company from the break.
PP 3 – MS. BANDITO
kingranch sends out a Gun Runner filly who keeps nibbling at elite company and is very close to taking a proper bite. The near-miss in the Rancho Dash came with a 111 speed figure at six furlongs, and her earlier graded wins show she can sit in that comfortable second flight without needing a perfect pace collapse. Stretching from six to seven is the key question, but with D Givins aboard and a profile that keeps getting sturdier, she is the kind of horse who could turn this into a very expensive headache for the favorites.
PP 4 – SASSY HAACK
For haack, SASSY HAACK owns the kind of seven-furlong Grade 1 resume that demands respect without any garnish. She won both the Nutcracker and the Breeders’ Bowl F and M Sprint, she has banked nearly $1.56 million, and her late punch is exactly what you want when a race starts sizzling like bacon left on too long. The recent second in the Davey Jones was perfectly solid, and if O A Haack can keep her within shouting distance early, she is one of the most likely winners in the entire field.
PP 5 – BONES OF BUDDHA
Out of ksparrow, BONES OF BUDDHA is admirably honest and generally shows up with the same stalking trip every time. She has picked off smaller spots, she ran third in Grade 1 company last spring, and the 107 she earned in the Unthinkable says she is not overmatched on raw competence. Still, this is the sort of race where competence alone can leave you holding the celery sticks while everybody else grabs the greasy good stuff; she needs a career top to win.
PP 6 – JOELOE
hipica has a lightly raced filly here with real upside, and that matters in a division where some of the older heads have already shown their whole menu. JOELOE has won five of eleven, she keeps finishing her races like a patient stalker, and her recent Grade 2 second and third at this distance suggest she fits the assignment. She probably needs another jump from the 109 range into the low 110s, but she is not some random salad on the side; she is usable, logical, and sneaky.
PP 7 – EIGHTY EIGHTY FORD
Racing for liam, EIGHTY EIGHTY FORD is a fascinating old-ticket horse because the record screams class even when the form cycle gets messy. She is a two-time Grade 1 winner, including a juvenile top-level score and last December’s La Zebra at seven furlongs with a 112 figure, and M Wallace is riding like somebody who already ordered dessert. The break since late December is the nap angle: if she wakes up sharp, she can absolutely spice the exotics at a price.
PP 8 – AGE OF BUGLE
alibilane64 brings a classic speed profile, and in a race this salty that can either make you king for a day or toast by the sixteenth pole. She won a Grade 1 sprint at six furlongs, nearly stole the Everclear at this trip in January, and her best races come when she is allowed to freewheel instead of negotiate. At roughly 21/1 she is the kind of longshot that can ruin everybody’s tidy spreadsheet, because pure speed on a fast strip is still pure speed.
PP 9 – LEAVING HOME
From cb1011, last year’s Humane Distaff winner comes back with a profile that is impossible to ignore. LEAVING HOME already owns top-level form at this exact distance, she looked outrageously comfortable wiring an allowance prep in March, and her earlier First Class and Distaff Breeders Bowl Cap wins underline how much she enjoys getting into a rhythm and making rivals work around her. If she shakes loose or even just gets first run, she can defend this title and make the rest of the field feel like they showed up after the good wings were gone.
PP 10 – HA SEONG
For padrebri, HA SEONG enters off the cleanest recent Grade 1 statement in the race: a Sand Storm win with a 114 figure against this same general caliber of opposition. She is a Medaglia d’Oro mare with a legitimate late motor, she has already hit the board in multiple Grade 1 events, and the F Gossett factor is like reaching for the extra side of loaded fries because you know the quality is there and you are not pretending otherwise. This mare feels polished, dangerous, and perfectly suited to let the speed fools do the hard work before she comes inhaling late.
PP 11 – WITCH BOLT
canyongate sends an end-of-year award winner, and that kind of hardware does not come from a bargain bin. WITCH BOLT has been sharp in graded company around one turn, owns a 111 at seven furlongs, and usually puts herself right on the stove from the opening bell. She is stepping up after a Grade 3 win and adds a furlong from her last start, so the question is whether she can keep the grease hot all the way home, but she is much too talented to dismiss as just another speed filly.
PP 12 – ORDER OF THE GHOST
Running for padrebri, ORDER OF THE GHOST is another closer who badly wants this thing to turn chaotic. Her Razzle Dazzle win at six furlongs was sharp, H Desitter has been finishing in the money all over the place lately, and the Ghostzapper-Curlin cross gives her every excuse to keep grinding after others start reaching for air. The drawback is simple: her Sand Storm eighth did not flatter, and she probably needs the leaders to fry themselves into crumbs before her kick becomes truly dangerous.
PP 13 – CK MOSH PRINCE
Representing docoz, CK MOSH PRINCE is the old pro in the room with seventeen wins from twenty-eight starts and a deeply trustworthy seven-furlong dirt profile. She owns a Grade 1 trophy from the Winter Wonderland Distaff, she has stacked 111-through-115 figures like a plate of onion rings nobody sensible should finish alone, and her stalking style under C Winter gives her options from the outside. If HA SEONG is the tidy recent-form pick, CK MOSH PRINCE is the no-nonsense résumé horse who can absolutely make that opinion look lazy.
PP 14 – FLYTRAX
From robsscoobi, FLYTRAX breaks from the parking lot, but the mare has enough tactical pace to make that less scary than it looks. She won the Distaff Breeders Bowl Cap at this exact trip with a 111, she is by Tapit out of a Storm Cat mare, and she has quietly been one of the most dependable one-turn dirt runners in the field. She still needs that first Grade 1 breakthrough, yet this draw may actually force R Hansen to stay out of trouble and make one clean, sensible move.
The Shortlist
| PP | Horse | Jockey | Odds | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | HA SEONG | F Gossett | 7/1 | Recent Grade 1 winner with the right closing style for a heated pace. |
| 13 | CK MOSH PRINCE | C Winter | 6/1 | Battle-tested seven-furlong specialist with elite win depth. |
| 4 | SASSY HAACK | O A Haack | 10/1 | Two Grade 1 wins at the trip and a stretch kick built for this scenario. |
The Prediction
Win: HA SEONG. The recent Sand Storm win, the 114 figure, and the projected race shape all line up like a tray of perfect bad decisions.
Place: CK MOSH PRINCE. If the favorite move stalls for even a heartbeat, this seasoned closer-stalker is the one most likely to inhale the whole situation.
Show: SASSY HAACK. She loves seven furlongs, owns the class, and should get the kind of honest setup that lets her come slicing late.
LEAVING HOME is the most dangerous pace horse, and if she gets brave on the front end again this preview can look very silly very fast, which is honestly the risk you take when you would rather lounge in a recliner than overcomplicate a Grade 1 filly sprint.
