Thrilling Finish in The Longest Walk GIII
The Longest Walk Stakes
Grade III
A mile and one eighth on the Firm Turf Course
$150,000
Fillies and mares, 3 years old
Stakes record – 2009 – SPIRIT OF MUSIC, 1:49, SPF 100.802
SPIRIT OF MUSIC went from nearly last to first with a hard charge to win the premier THE LONGEST WALK Stakes here is Florida this weekend. We had a thrilling finish down the stretch with every horse but one within five lengths at the final turn. Jockey Baumann was able to bring home SPIRIT OF MUSIC though and help her to capture her first Graded win.
The big brown filly by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT made trainer BestoBene4 look like a genius as he stretched her out to 9 furlongs for the first time and she seemed to really take to it. The win is her 4th victory in only 6 tries. She has now won two in a row and has over $188k in earnings. She ran her first 100 SPF and now has three total Stakes wins and has gathered her first Graded win. She improved her rank to number 38 in the three year old turf classic class.
The start of the race had three horses break away from the pack, K’S SLEW WELLS, MISS STREET and HELL PATROL. They stayed in the lead for most of the race until the jail break at the top of the stretch. That is when our winner forged through the crowd followed closely by both CHAPARRO and BLUES IN THE NITE who finished second and third.
Trainer BestoBene4 and the Zeco Stables of Belgium will now have to give their prized filly a rest and plan her course to future greatness. There are quite a few big turf races coming up later this year and this girl could be in the mix.
Good luck to all runners!
