Stakes record – Premier Race

We have a nice group of colts here in Victoria, Australia this weekend and the weather looks to be nice and crisp with a fast and firm track. There are lot’s of horses that seem to really be finding their own either after a shot on dirt or after a lackluster two year old campaign and that should make things interesting. They are rather evenly matched and should keep it interesting although it appears that one horse may be the one to watch. I’m really looking forward to this one so let’s take a look:

1 – OLD TOWN(KY) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Dixiedotco Racing9/1 StormBoot 22.7% J.Kohlmorgen 131 – 24 – 10 – 22 – 18% 92 $ 111,462110

( SPEIGHTSTOWN x KINGMAMBO x SEATTLE SLEW out of SIEZE THE THRONE) This lightly raced chestnut colt jumped over to the grass for trainer StormBoot three races ago and took to it like a duck to water. With two wins including a Stakes and a close second in another, this big colt has improved quickly for the DixieDotco Racing team. They certainly know how to keep their talented youngsters moving on the path to improvement and this guy is no different. They have Kohlmorgen in the saddle and he has been having a very solid year and should help this colt with his stalking style to be in the hunt if he can just bump the SPF up a bit and show a little more improvement.

2 – LET THERE BE BLOOD(KY) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Black Label Stables7/1SDMFSTC28.7% S.Nightingale 56 – 4 – 8 – 5 – 7% 93 $ 48,125281

( SMARTY JONES x SEATTLE SLEW x SADLER’S WELLS out of BEE THE ONE) After a first race on the clay, this colt moved to the grass and has looked really good in his four races there for trainer SDMFSTC. Two wins and two seconds including a heartbreaking miss just one lunge from the victory in the CORONADO’S GOLD Challenge Stakes two back. With a nice pedigree, the Black Label Stables are certainly hoping for great things from this colt and this would be a great time to show his stuff. He likes to come from the back half but more like a stalker and jockey Nightingale should be able to use that to his advantage although he has been struggling some this year.

3 – LINN BASIK(ENG) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Iant Stables19/1Iant417.8% M.Zerr 12 – 0 – 1 – 2 – 0% 88 $ 25,500N/A

(PIVOTAL(GB) x UNBRIDLED’S SONG x ROUND TABLE) With only three races to his credit, this Iant4 owned and trainer colt has made great strides in those limited opportunities. He went from a 48 SPF to a 77 and then an 88 SPF with two wins in a row. This will be the charcoal colored fellow’s first Stakes outing and he will need another jump in speed to contend here but so far he has been able to answer the call. One problem may be having jockey Zerr on his back who is still looking for the first win of the season on the first weekend of Spring. Could be an interesting horse to watch, especially down the line.

4 – MOCONA(IND) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Theatrical Stables5/1Roberto19.0% P.Spratt 39 – 8 – 4 – 5 – 21% 95 $ 96,821195

( MARCUS ANDRONICUS x A.P. INDY x MILL REEF out of A.P.REEF) MARCUS ANDRONICUS has been an interesting Sire for turf lovers and this colt is one of the successful offspring. He has hit the board in seven of his ten races and threw a quick 95 SPF last time out although he finished third in an Allowance race there. Trainer Roberto of the Theatrical Stables has watched this colt fare well in Stakes races although he struggled in his only Graded outing. He is hoping that the maturity level is higher this go around. It will help having jockey Spratt in the irons as he has had a really solid year so far. They will be coming from the back late in the race and that work well in this race.

5 – NUITS MAGIQUES(ENG) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Zeco Stables Belgium5/1BestoBene315.2% D.Evans 185 – 63 – 41 – 25 – 34% 98 $ 571,02646

( GREEN DESERT x GALILEO (IRE) x VICE REGENT out of COMET) After a really super two year old campaign that featured a couple of Graded wins, this colt started off this year with an uninspired run in the FAINTING GOAT NIGHTMARE G1 Stakes in January of this year where he finished 10th. Trainer BestoBene3 and the Zeco Stables are hoping that was an aberration for this coupled entry in the race. With a top 50 ranking and more than a half a million in earnings, it is hoped that this colt has too much talent to be one of those two year old wonders that you never hear from again. They have Evans in the leather who is one of the best at this or any track and that should help matters. There will be lots of folks watching closely to see which way this colt is going to go.

6 – CLUB ADMIRERER(IRE) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Nickesyd Racing Club22/1Calle210.1% T.Myslinski 20 – 1 – 5 – 1 – 5% 91 $ 38,485N/A

( RED CLUBS x DALIAPOUR (IRE) x DIXIELAND BAND out of POUR ADMIRATION) After a nondescript two year old campaign, this big brown colt won his last race of the year then trainer Calle2 gave him a nice layoff until the end of February when he threw a nice 91 SPF and won his second in a row. This will be his first Stakes outing and he will have to jump the SPF up a bit but he looks like a special horse that may have just found his way. They have Myslinksi holding the reins and he needs to find his way this year with only one win in twenty outings. That may not help this colt and could keep him from the improvement that he will need here.

7 – DARK OMENS(IRE) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
More Evil Than Evil Empire!7/1Super718.2% G.Adler 35 – 5 – 3 – 2 – 14% 90 $ 71,632338

( DYLAN THOMAS (IRE) x KINGMAMBO x SEATTLE SLEW out of SPEAKOFTHEDEVIL) The Super Stables team and trainer Super7 have got to be just a bit frustrated with this nicely bred colt who is sired by the fashionable sophomore turf sire DYLAN THOMAS. He has shown lots of talent but has only one win in his seven trips and that was way back in August of last year with his maiden. Since then he has a couple of seconds and a third but can’t seem to finish. He has had quicker SPFs on the grass with two 90s in his last two. Is he ready to take off as a three year old? Hopefully jockey Adler can give him a boost although he has been solid but unspectacular so far this year himself. This team has more hopes than substance but you never know when they can turn it around.

8 – RIVER OF FUN(AUS) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Sabalou Stables5/2HolyGhost13.0% R.Baily 147 – 15 – 26 – 20 – 10% 100 $ 229,746104

( SNITZEL x RUBITON(AUS) x MARSCAY(AUS)) One of only 45 runners in three years for sire SNITZEL, this colt is by far the best with two Stakes wins in a row and a second in a Graded Stakes. He now has two triple digit SPFs for trainer Holyghost and the Sabalou Stables and should be the one to beat here. His last three races should have beat everyone in the field and he is about the only early speed in the race. That could play to his favor as well. Jockey Baily is in the saddle and although he’s been down from his rookie season a year ago, he is quite capable of guiding this colt to victory. This could be the very first Graded win for an offspring of SNITZEL.

9 – LIEVELINGSDIER(FR) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Zeco Stables Belgium13/1Zeco810.3% A.Snappa 67 – 7 – 3 – 10 – 10% 85 $ 96,818247

( KAHYASI(IRE) x POLISH NUMBERS x MT. LIVERMORE) The second of the coupled entry for the Zeco Stables, this horse may be getting better odds from the Morning Line than he deserves. Although he has finished on the board seven of twelve, he has never run faster than an 85 SPF and that figure would put him well back here. Add that to the fact that Snappa is barely average so far this year as a jockey and could make for a long afternoon for trainer Zeco8 and this team. They may end up heading back to the clay where he won his only three races.

10 – PIOLIN(IRE) ODDS STABLE WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED EARNINGSRANK
Rafa Stables6/1SonSierra14.7% M.McMillen 16 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 6% 97 $ 155,840335

( MANDURO x MEDAGLIA D’ORO x A.P. INDY out of MEDALLA) After winning a couple of Stakes races on the dirt early in his career, this colt seemed to stall in his improvement and trainer SonSierra of the Rafa Stables moved him to the turf three back where he seems much more comfortable. He seems to really like this distance as well and could be a dark horse although the Morning Line seems to have him pegged here. He has some of the top SPFs in the field on this surface and distance and his biggest problem could be carrying around jockey McMillen who has only one win all year. The lack of early speed in the race could have him beside RIVER OF FUN and carry them both to the finish and into the top three.

Morning Line = 8-4-5-10-2-7
Paz Picks = 8-4-10-1-2

There seems to be horses moving in both directions in this race, both up and down the ladder. I like OLD TOWN to continue to show improvement and finish fourth. PIOLIN is looking good lately but I’m afraid the jockey will hold him back but I think he has enough to finish in the top three. I think that MOCONA will come on hard at the end but won’t be able to quite catch RIVER OF FUN who should jump out to a nice lead and breeze home with the win.

Good luck to all runners!
