Kewney or Cupie … They’re All Dolls To Me

3889.5314 – G3 The Kewney Stakes

Fillies, 3 Years Old

One Mile (8F)

TURF: Firm

A capacity crowd is expected on Saturday to watch several of the top fillies in the three year old division compete for glory in the Grade 3 Kewney Stakes.  Led by fab36’s BLUE GREEN HUNTER(KY) and racine3’s ICE AND SNOW(JPN),  this competitive field will parade to the post with many looking to push aside these leaders as they attempt to climb the ladder to the top of the division.  Let’s look at the field.

PP1:  175068 CAPITAL KINDNESS(KY)   screaming  (19/1)

North Light(IRE) x Machiavellian x Shadeed

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  431

WINS: 2   BANK:  $51,140

With only one start as a two year old, this improving daughter of North Light(IRE) comes into the Kewney off an Allowance win in California where she covered today’s distance in 1:36:2 (91).  Today she meet’s Stakes opponents for the first time however her running style and inside post sets her up for a potential upset.  If she’s able to build on her climbing speed ratings today and take the next step, the only surprise will be how we missed getting on this longshot after it’s all but too late.

PP2:  161101 WAKE UP SUN(JPN)   rlogans  (10/1)

Charasmatic x Afleet x Siberian Express

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  85

WINS: 1   BANK:  $197,430

With only one win to date and that being her maiden score, don’t underestimate this one on record alone.  She has been competing hard and knocking in Stakes company both as a two year old and a three year old.  Already having competed twice in 2009, she has a second and a third to show for two non-graded stakes starts one at six and the other at seven and a half furlongs respectively.  All in all, she has hit the board in eight of eleven starts.  In her last five non-graded stakes starts, she’s finished second five times always right there in mid-stretch but just missing at the end.  Today she stretches out for the first to a mile hoping to conserve her speed from a forward position.  A minor award.

PP3:  155239 GORGEOUS TRICKSTER(IRE)   eirann3  (11/1)

Montjeu x Kris S. x Alydar

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  126

WINS: 2   BANK:  $70,335

This gal has ducked nobody in her quest for “blacktype” competing in three graded races to date including a Grade 1 and tries again here in this spot.  As a two year old she did finish second by two lengths at today’s distance in the Kristrical Fools Memorial Stakes.  She comes into this race having competed in the G2 Hong Kong Jockey Club Oaks Stakes three weeks ago finishing a well beaten eighth.  A large step forward would be required to compete here today and she must prove herself first.

PP4:  98072 SHE MIGHT BE GIANT(KY)   gradeone  (5/1)

Giant’s Causeway(IRE) x Seeking The Gold x Danehill

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  53

WINS: 6   BANK:  $432,680

This filly is two for two in her three year old campaign having come off of victories in both the Our Star Jill Stakes and the More Of The Ginny Memorial Stakes.  Run at seven furlongs, her latest effort of just three weeks ago yielded a speed figure of 101 and that run puts in the “dangerous” category today.  She did compete in the G1 Breeders Bowl Juvenile Filly Turf last fall finishing up the track but did show potential in that event.  Presented here with another opportunity to take the next step, I look for her to leap high and far here.  The one!

PP5:  160045 BLUE GREEN HUNTER(KY)   fab36  (4/1)

Bluegrass Cat x Jade Hunter x Seattle Slew

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  7

WINS: 6   BANK:  $438,340

This classy filly began her racing journey with four consecutive wins including a win in the non-graded Independent Star Special and the Grade 3 Booker T. Handicap over today’s mile distance.  She met defeat for the first time in the Grade 1 Breeders Bowl Juvenile Filly Turf after leading early in that event only to falter late finishing a gallant fourth beaten by three.  Since then, she’s finished second in the G1 Dancing Blade Handicap and a won the Grade 3 Broadside Stakes running the mile in 1:36 flat (96).  Most recently, she comes into this race off a disappointing finish in the Grade 1 Train Yard Special and looks to re-establish herself here as a leading filly in her division.  A contender.

PP6:  162537 SUZY’S AWESOME(KY)   snag  (6/1)

Awesome Again x Danzig x NijinskyII

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  21

WINS: 6   BANK:  $181,700

Suzy’s on a four race win streak  of which her most recent three are of the non-graded stakes variety.  In her latest, the Provellian Stakes, she stalked the early pace sitting off by two as she gathered herself at the top of the lane and pounced in mid-stretch winning by one going away.  She covered the mile in 1:35:4 (96) and repeat of that effort will put in her contention in her first graded stakes attempt.

PP7:  21753 JETSETTING(ENG)   dowelly4  (17/1)

Shamardal x Flying Spur(AUS) x Lear Fan

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  151

WINS: 4   BANK:  $194,291

This daughter of Shamardal is attempting two first’s here in this spot;  the one mile distance and graded company as she takes the acid test for her connections.  The distance should prove little problem given her stalking style to date as well as her pedigree which favours the additional yardage.  However, she’ll need to really pick up her speed if she hopes to compete with this group and may ultimately need this one to learn what it takes to make the jump.  An outsider until she proves otherwise. Tab for later.

PP8:  162787 HIGH HILL PROSPECT(IRE)   manorsquar  (9/1)

High Chaparral(IRE) x Danehill x Mr. Prospector

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  54

WINS: 6   BANK:  $179,320

This high percentage daughter of High Chaparral(IRE) has six wins in seven lifetime starts and is on a five race wins streak coming into this event.  Her latest, the eight furlong non-graded Kristeene S. Stakes, was her most impressive to date.  Covering the distance on a “good” course in 1:35:4 (97) she got to the top quickly and forgot to stop and she hung on to win by one.  In fact, this speedy filly has never been headed at any call throughout this win streak.  There are others in here with speed to burn as well so there’s risk in a developing speed duel but she may be fastest.  A threat to wire this field!

PP9:  44434 AMITYA(ENG)   stalbenji  (15/1)

Authorized x Kingmambo x Danzig

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  328

WINS: 2   BANK:  $71,340

Although this relatively inexperienced daughter of Authorized began her racing late in her two year old season, she has begun to some noise that’s got people talking.  With two wins, a second and a third in four starts to date, she comes into this race having won the seven and a half furlong R. Throat Memorial Stakes running a 90 speed figure in the process.  An improving type who could make her presence known here may need one at this level before taking the next step.  I’m from Missouri … show me!

PP10:  119184 ICE AND SNOW(JPN)   racine3  (7/1)

Lammtarra x Awesome Again x Clever Trick

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  5

WINS: 5   BANK:  $435,015

The SIM’s fifth ranked three year old filly comes into this race off a dismal result in the Grade 1 Train Yard Special in which she never competed, dropping back early and finished beaten by fourteen lengths.  The connections had her scoped afterwards and could find nothing wrong so they’re wheeling her back in this spot in hopes of getting her untracked but have not found an easy field here in which to do so against.  She did finish third last Fall in the Grade 1 Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf and followed that up with a second in the Grade 1 Miesque’s Gold Classic Stakes.  If she’s right, she has the class to handle this group but if not well …  your guess is as good as mine.  I say the latter.

PP11:  159205 FRACTURE(KY)   rocket34  (14/1)

Horse Chestnut(SAF) x Niniski x Hail To Reason

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  62

WINS: 3   BANK:  $97,646

This smart looking daughter of Horse Chestnut(SAF) takes on graded company for the first time here today.  She comes into the event off a second place finish in the Full A. P. Handicap over eight and a half furlongs and the shorter distance today will be to her liking.  She employs a speed style but will have to meet a higher standard if she hopes to stay with the speedy  HIGH HILL PROSPECT(IRE).  Will need to prove herself here and may not be ready to take the next step.  An outsider today.

PP812:  161167 EVITA PERON(KY)   puracrema  (6/1)

Distorted Humor x Nureyev x Raise A Native

TURF CLASSIC RANK:  64

WINS: 4   BANK:  $142,100

Another speedy filly looking to prove herself in graded company for the first time, this daughter of Distorted Humor comes into this race off a nose loss in the Sawdust Handicap over eight and a half furlongs.  Prior to her latest, she was on a three race win streak including a win in the Rainbow Bridge II Special Stakes at today’s mile covering the distance in 1:35:4 (97).   A threat to wire this field!
