It looked like Bingo day at Senior Citizens center for the Old Man Of The Mountain RACES yesterday. That’s right, I said races not race. There were races at both New Hampshire and Vermont this weekend with full fields of 20 each. That is a lot of geezers huffing and puffing around! Here in Vermont, OR NOT TWO PUNCH didn’t look like a Senior Citizen at all as he ran a 100 SPF and won by nearly two lengths. He has moved into second place in the series and is only one point back of our host who is the leader. It appears that he will be able to match up to new restrictions as it was only his second win in the past year. CITY DEVIL had the lead for the entire race until the last few lengths when he ran out of gas and headed to the oxygen tanks! Third place was taken by SOLAR SHADE who gained a point in the standings by surviving the crowded field.
In a separate part of the race, in what we call the Sun Dial Standings, the race for last place is almost as coveted in the win in this series for AARP card holders. The winner of the Sun Dial Trophy is held in high regard back at the old folks horme. It’s always a lot of fun to see who contends. In the Sun Dial portion of our series we had some horses that were more than 21 lengths back and seemed to finish about a day and a half behind the others. In his third consecutive OMOTM series, BEEF TOOTH was able to capture the last place spot with much wheezing and geezing. He was pushed (or perhaps anchored!) for the last spot by CENTERFOLD SPARK the pre-race favorite to be the caboose. It was close all the way around but “BEEFY” was able to fall a bit further behind at the end. Another wily OMOTM series veteran, BRATTICUS ended up picking up a point in the standings for finishing just ahead of the other two. That is what makes this series so interesting. Now everyone is still eligible and some will be even with a win while others will have to wait out the host winning again if they want to get back in and gain points for the Old Man of the Mountain series Championship and garner all of the accolades that come with that. Certainly a nice thing to hang on your wall at the Old Horses Retirement Home!
Now we will have to see what happens in four weeks with this series. Will it be two races or even three now that both of these were filled up? I don’t know how far I can stretch myself, this cloning stuff can be expensive!! Back at the BTB offices, they don’t like to see CLONING on the old expense report! The early line is that it will be one race back at Vermont but will probably still be open to twenty runners. It will probably have to change to a NW of 3 in a year race as well THREE WISE MEN will be rested and ready and sucking down his magic youth potion. We added a lot of folks to the leaders board this week so it is still anyone’s game. There are eight races left in the ten race series and lots of things can happen including quite a few heart attacks and strokes among the participants, so it should be interesting down the road. That’s what makes this series so much fun.. Stay tuned Race Fans!
Best of luck to all of these fine old guys and gals!
