EWC Belmont-Final Triple Crown Race
The third and final stage of the EWC’s residency is upon us with the long 12-furlong Belomont Race. This is the inaugural race for the residency in having their own set of triple crown races. With that said, there will not be a triple crown horse winner in the premier set of races. Roxynken’s (writer of this article) had the winner in the EWC Derby with Ed’s Kash taking the first stage. The horse failed in the EWC Preakness, finishing well off the winner and not seemingly liking the offtrack. The winner would be Kash Front (another from Roxy’s stable) and both of these horses are returning for the final phase of the trio of stake races. Could one of these snag another victory and make it a sweep for the owner? Let’s take a look at the field:
1-PETE’S EWC THANK U 15/1-(owned by Denovo) American Pharoah bred colt who seems to prefer the sprints as he has landed ITM in 9 of 10 outings. The longer EWC Triple Crown races have been a challenge for this guy as he has finished double digit lengths behind the winner in the first two events. He’ll be going the longest distance of the race series at 12-furlongs and doesn’t look favorable coming into the race. A good dose of Nu-Flo Formula could give him a good boost.
2-VIOLENT IMPULSE 5/1-(owned by Millerfarm) This one invades the field and did not compete in either of the first two stages of the race series. He enters off a respectfull 4th in a listed stake race at 9.5 furlongs cranking out a serious 105 speed. The Violence bred colt has done well in routes, winning three of 10 starts and finishing third a total of four times. Invader is tagged as co-favorite in the field and does his best work charging from backside of the field.
3-A CRIMSON BAND 10/1-(owned by Bobthehat) Makes his first appearance in the EWC Triple Crown Race Series and should not be ignored based on the long odds. He is a maiden and enters off a very nice second in a 12-furlong allowance race in which he snagged the lead at the third call, after trailing by 9 at the half and got run down in the stretch to finish 2nd by over a stride. The 104 speed he knocked off looks very good and don’t count this Curlin bred runner out!
4-WHISKEY MISCHIEF 8/1-(owned by Pmill) This Into Mischief bred colt has ran 5th in the EWC Derby and struggled in the EWC Preakness finishing 9th. He has two wins to his credit in 10 starts. He’ll be extending in distance to a longer route which is an unknown territory for him. His mother, Touch of Virtue did not race this distance nor has half-sister Virtue Street. Hard to tell but the breeding line is very imposing and could play well with stretching out.
5-EXSHAW 6/1-(owned by Atthewire) Will be competing for the third time in this racing series and in the EWC Derby the finished 7th but improved nicely in the EWC Preakness with a third place finish. He was sired by Uncle Mo and has been ITM in four of his five lifetime races. He usually runs in the front section of the field and is able to hit 100-speeds, as he popped a 103 in the Preakness and an even better 105 in the G2 Heat Less Stakes in mid-April. The Derby race came with less than 3-weeks rest which may have impacted that result. He’s die much better in the Preakness with a bit longer rest break and no reason to expect a poor outcome this time.
6-DIALED IN FAVORITE 6/1-(owned by Dontbetonme) Showed late run ability in the EWC Preakness by slicing a 13-stride deficit at the half down to 8-strides at the end of the race, however, he finished 6th. He did not appear in the Derby event. Racing in stake events has been a challenge for this colt as he has tried four times in this class with a 4th place finish being his best outcome at 8.5 furlong in a listed stake event. Otherwise, he has a 3-2-0 record in allowance races (including MSW). Half-brother Favorite Fantasy has three wins at 10+ furlong distances, so that could be an indicator that this Dialed In bred runner may like the longer route distance.
7-KASH FRONT 5/1-(owned by Kashbarn) Won the EWC Preakness in his last start, wiring the field with a 108 speed. He took a 6-stride lead into the stretch and that was nibbled down to a bit under strides as the field closed in on this War Front bred colt. He has won four of 9 races and ITM 6 times in a mix of dirt and grass surfaces. Versatile runner did not run in the Derby event but does seek to repeat and take another piece of the crown races, but the front runner is catchable.
8-RAVEN’S RAPPAGE 22/1-(owned by Denovo) Did not fare well in the first two stages of the Crown races, finishing 15th and 14th respectively in the Derby and Preakness events. He has done much better in the sprint class finishing ITM 8 of 9 races compared to 1 of 4 races. Speeds are also a concern as they have topped in the low 90-range and others are capable of 100+ numbers. Hard to see this Raven’s Pass bred child pulling off an upset in this event.
9-MAMBO OF THE WEST 6/1-(owned by JM23stable) Appeared in both the Derby and Preakness events and finished fourth in each. The West Coast bred filly will again square off with the boys and she has very nice late run ability. In the Derby, she narrowly missed the top spot by a half length and in the Preakness, she was 16 strides behind at the half and cut that down to 7 and equalled her lifetime best speed of 101. Both top speeds occured on offtrack conditions and dry surface will be coming her way this time. She does gain more time to make it to the top this time with the longer 12-furlong distance, making her a threat this time out.
10-DIALED IN FINANCE 9/1-(owned by Dontbetonme) Makes her third start in the Triple Crown series. This Dialed In colt just missed the top spot in the Derby race losing out by a mere head as he finished second. The wet surface was not his thing in the Preakness race as he was never a factor, finishing 8th. He usually runs on the front end of the field where he has won three times in 11 races. In the Derby, he drifted to a midfield postion and made up 8 strides from the half to nearly winning the race. Throw out his last performanc on the wet dirt track and you have a contender.
11-ED’S KASH 7/1-(owned by Kashbarn)-Winner of the Derby race (by a head), this War Front bred colt did poorly in the Preakness race and seemed to be impacted by the wet track as he finished 7th. The four-time winner in 11 starts looks to make amends at the longer 12 furlong route distance and it does not look like the extra furlongs will help as he was wearing out in the Derby at 10-furlongs as the field nearly overtook him. Doubtful turnaround in this run.
MY PICKS
I think filly DIaled in Finance can put away the boys in this field. The longer distance sill be a huge plus for her.
Longshot A Crimson Band is the only one in the field who has gone the 12 furlong route and did sow with a 104 speed. This maiden may not be a maiden anymore after this race is over.
Mambo of the West has terrific late speed and the longer distance will benefit from this. Hits the board this time out and can be on the top of it too!
Good luck to everyone!!!
Good luck everyone, and thanks for this write-up Ken 🙂
