Six to Test the Water

Seven furlongs
Firm Turf                   $55,000
Fillies and Mares, 2 years old

Stakes History:   Ran once before (March 26, 2005) in Wisconsin.  Winner-  HIP HIP HURRAHY (7.5 f 1:31)

Carolina Downs will welcome a field of six 2 years old filly juveniles to the running of STARKE RIVER(FR) on Saturday.  This race may be seen as a stepping stone into competition at route distances, but it can also be viewed as an opportunity for one or more of these fillies to show signs of developing into something special.

STARKE RIVER(FR) won two stakes events in a short twenty two race career.  Overall, she won close to two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

As for the 2005 Field for The STARKE RIVER(FR) Special– This field has definitely not been without work; as it is a talented and experience group of sprinters.

PP1

REDPATH

Owner-prufrockaj

Jockey-N Stalker

Odds-14/1

Stroll x Red Ransom

Ships in from neighboring state and will need to bounce back with an improved performance to be in the picture.

PP2

SMARTY ALEX

Owner-tribeca

Jockey-E Davis

Odds 6/1

Lost Solider x Red Ransom

Untested on the turf, she saw her three race win streak snapped last time out.  Sire throws a large percentage of dirt runners, so some doubt exist if she is can handle the surface.

PP3

BORDER TREATY

Owner-opimulder

Jockey-K Naber

Odds-7/2

Boundary x D’Accord

Winner of three out of five races- comes in following a narrow win in a restricted allowance event.  She was less impressive in her lone stakes performance, but second time around may prove to be better.

PP4

DR STRANGEGLOVE

Owner-worldwide

Jockey-D Eperado

Odds-7/2

Cat Theif x Miswaki

Faded late in her last outing, this distance is slightly shorter and ownership hopes she will last.  Expect the Doctor to be the pace setter, and will probably receive a lot of pressure the last quarter.

PP5

MERGE

Owner-kaif015

Jockey-T Mafit

Odds-5/2

Dixieland Band x Mr. Propsoector

Won last time out with relatively ease (at this distance on the turf) in a gate to wire performance.  She will be another of the early pace setters, pressure on the front may benefit any late runner.

PP6         TRANSFER

Owner-dozaa

Jockey-D Prior

Odds-9/5

Dyanformer x A.P. Indy

Morning line favorite, and may be in ideal position at the top of the stretch.  The expected battle on the lead between MERGE and DR STRANGELOVE; may set the table for TRANSFER or BORDER TREATY.  Do not forget that REDPATH may be gearing up for  a stretch run and the pressure up front may benefit her.  Lastly,  SMARTY ALEX is a late runner and may find the turf to her liking, so don’t totally ignore her presence in this event.  My selections are:

MERGE          TRANSFER        BORDER TREATY
