Juveniles Grabs the Attention in Louisiana

Five and one half furlongs
Fast Dirt
$80,000
All horses, 2 years old

Stakes History:   First year offered

A field of six 2 years old runners will be trying to crack into the status of winning a stakes event for the first time.  Each of the runners have shown some talent and deserve a shot at a stakes event, but the ownership of each of these six entries are looking for a promising sign that will indicate that a futre sim star is on the horizon.

As for the past runner that this stakes event honors- FUNK CAN had sixty four starts during his career.  While only one of his twelve wins was in stakes competition, he was able to accumulate over two hundred and eighty thousand dollars in total earnings.

As for the 2005 Field for The FUNK CAN Mermorial:

PP1

LEXDE

Owner-northway

Jockey-C Wall

Odds 6/1

Catienus x Unbridled

A starter of seven- he is returning to dirt, where he has been in the money in three of four starts.  He usually breaks well to gain good early positioning, but usually fails to gain ground in the stretch.  He has yet to try a route distance event, but has not shown any signs of wanting to stretch it out- so this distance may be his best bet.

PP2

ASTRONOMICAL UNIT

Owner-rockrace

Jockey-P Sullivan

Odds 9/2

High Yield x Chromite

Being a late runner that appears be better suited to stretch it out, it is a bit surprising that he is shortening his run in this event.  He may run out of real estate before he gets to the front.

PP3

ATAME

Owner-frankbooth

Jockey-K Robertson

Odds-2/1

Olmadovor x Bellypha(IRE)

Winner of two of three- he is entering stakes competition for the first time.  He finished ahead of LEXDE in his last outing.  Has displayed a strong stretch finish, so longer trips should be in the future.

PP4

BOLD MILLIONS

Owner-mickracing

Jockey-S Hardinger

Odds-10/1

Millions x Bold Anthony

Debuted with two wins, this bargin baby has ran well, but not well enough in his last two trips.  After showing signs of tiring at 7.5 furlongs, ownership is shortening his trip in this event.  He should be challenging the likes of LEXDE out of the gate.

PP5

CHEROKEE CHIEF

Owner-bearclub

Jockey-F Oxon

Odds-8/1

Cherokee Run x Raise a Man

He has been close in each of his three starts; including one win.  He came up a bit short in his stakes debut LTO- his chances are a bit better than odds indicate.

PP6         SEATTLE UNION

Owner-articboy

Jockey-U Cunningham

Odds-7/5

Dixie Union x Carson City

Morning line favorite- was impressive in narrow three-quarter length win in his last outing.  Out of six starts, he has been extremely consistent in his efforts.  This race has plenty of out of-the-gate speed, so SEATTLE UNION should be in a good position to rally in the stretch.  The main concern for this talented runner should be whether he can rally to the front before the wire.  I expect him to want to stay closer to the early leaders in this short sprint.

For a group of runners that will be trying to move up into the top echelon of two years old- I am not sure that a five and one-half furlong event will generate the boost that these runners will need to move up a few notches in the rankings and on ladder of respect.

My selections are:  ATAME    SEATTLE UNION    CHEROKEE CHIEF
