Welcome to Northern California where the excitement is centered around the Bargain Bred Racing Series.  The envy of all trainers, to find the right bloodlines to produce a world class horse, for an incredibly cheap costs.  The field features 15 mixed colts and fillies that are ready to take that next step towards becoming the Class Ack of bargain breds.  There is a good mix of horses making their debut in this stakes race, while other have already ran with the bluebloods and given them all they can handle.  Without further ado let’s meet the field:

1) Roitrice – 12/1 — sydeston

(Roi Danzig x Dolphin Street x Ketrice)

Roitrice has previously ran in 4 races, still looking to crack that maiden tag, despite finishing in the show spot twice previously.  In his last race he ran 6 furlongs and notched his career high speed of 72 which put him in 3rd for the second consecutive race.  Seven furlongs will mark the longest the colt has run yet and given the colt’s tendency to try and get out in front early in the race, he will likely fall short in this one, but may factor into the show spot once again.

2) Popgun – 11/1 — bargainer

(Gunpowder x Timber Country x Eskimo)

The good news for Popgun and trainer bargainer is that she has yet to finish worse than 2nd in her 3 career races.  The not so good news, she has yet to finish 1st, as each race she has played 2nd fiddle.  Lucky for Popgun none of those horses are in the field today.  She has ran an increasingly better speed with each race and each added distance.  In her last race she ran in the Bargain Bred Racing Series Filly Turf Allowance race and finished 2nd with a speed of 73 which was also at 7 furlongs.  She will certainly be in the hunt to finish in the money, but will likely not have what it takes to finish 1st.

3) Irish Wolf – 11/1 — emeralds

(Amadeus Wolf x Royal Anthem x Loft)

Irish Wolf had his best race finishing 2nd with a career high speed of 71 at 7 furlongs in a Bargain Bred Allowance race.  It marked only the second time in his 5 career starts that he found his way into the money, the first coming in his debut in which he captured the Show spot.  His fastest speed yet has come at 7 furlongs, which will likely help out in this one.  Emeralds certainly hopes that his colt will find his way into the money once again, and perhaps get his first win in the near future.

4) Forest Path – 21/1 — misery

(Fort Wood x Northern Guest x Royal Prerogative)

In gate 4 we have Forest Path who has started his career with a sputter.  In his last race he was dropped to the maiden claiming level and got his first finish in the money which was at 8 furlongs.  He ran a career high speed of 64 which was substantially better than the speeds he has ran at the 7 furlong distance.  He will not have near the speed to stay on the lead in this one, as he is likely be near the front early, and fade fast.

5) Monarch’s Sunshine – 7/1 — 440yards

(Monarch’s Maze x Sunshine Forever x Numerous)

This good looking colt last ran in a stakes race and finished a respectable 3rd with a speed of 71 which was at 5.5 furlongs.  Even better news is that his best speed has come at 6 furlongs and perhaps he will like the distance being added back.  He broke his maiden at 6 furlongs with a speed of 77.  A speed in the high 70’s to low 80’s would give him a shot at the favorite Players Champion.  At the very least Monarch’s Sunshine has a great shot to get in the money for the second time in a row in a stakes race.

6) Orage Crushes – 25/1— lgbost2yos

(Orage Noir x Ride the Rails x Ile de Bourbon)

Orage Crushes is making his debut so it is very difficult to predict how well he will run.  The colt’s bloodlines suggest he should perform best on turf in routes.  The top earner out of Orage Noir is Cleveland Lord who has 4 career wins.  This colt may have a bright future, but I am predicting that bright future will not begin this week.

7) Never Give An Inch – 20/1 — prosportzc

(Danehill Express x Bahri x Never Say Die)

Never Give An Inch last ran in a Bargain Bred allowance race in which she finished 5th with a speed of 63 which was at 7 furlongs.  In her 5 races she has yet to make it to the winners circle.  However, the mare has taken the show spot twice in her career.  Her top speed came in her last race, 63, which will not be enough to keep her competitive in this one.

8) Present Participle – 18/1 — axeracing3

(Vying Victor x Bakst x Dancing Count)

Last time out Present Participle made his debut and it is certainly one axeracing3 certainly hopes to build on.  He took the place spot in his debut in a maiden bargain bred race at 6.5 furlongs.  He finished with a speed of 69.  If he can build on that speed he will certainly have a shot of getting into the money when it comes down the stretch.

9) Players Champion – 3/1– gnslander1

(Sawgrass X Danzero X SomethingFabulous)

Players Champion has given his share of bluebloods trouble while running neck and neck with them.  In his last race he ran in The Big Dog Bonanza finishing 3rd with a speed of 80 which was a 7 furlong race.  That notched a new career high for him as his previous high was 79 in a 6 furlong allowance race.  The colt has already earned over $46,000 in his 3 career races.  In his 3 races he has notched a win, place, and show.  Each time out he has improved on his speed and that is something that gnslander1 certainly hopes he can replicate.  Look for this colt to be near or in the front when heading down the stretch.

10) Along – 11/1 — txbred

(Yankee Mon x Platini x High Brite)

Along is going to make his first start on turf after four previous starts on dirt that yielded 2 place finishes, both at the claiming level.  In his last race he ran a speed of 70 at 5 furlongs in a maiden claiming race where he took 2nd, and trainer txbred claimed the colt and obviously wanted to see how he handles the transition to turf.  If Along can avoid running near the front early he may be able to make a late push to get him near the leaders.

11) Box Top – 8/1 – bigiron

(Wimbledon X Reprized X Old Vic)

The colt Box Top has already compiled 3 wins in his 5 career starts.  His last race and win came in a bargain bred allowance race in which he led wire to wire.  All three of his career victories were wire to wire wins.  He was claimed in a dirt race at 4.5 furlongs that he won, and immediately rewarded his new trainer bigiron for not only the claim, but the call to switch him over to turf.  He won with a career high speed of 73 and will certainly be another horse to keep your eye on that could upset the favorites.

12) Rei Rei – 14/1 — scorpion

(Doowaley x Fine Edge x Flirting Around)

The mare Rei Rei has finished in the money in all 3 of her races.  In her last race she ran in a Bargain Bred Allowance race for fillies and finished 3rd with a speed of 72 at a distance of 7 furlongs.    She notched her first win in the previous race in a bargain bred maiden special weight race.  She likes to lead early in the race, but the field closes in on her fast when coming down the stretch.  If she can avoid expending all of her energy early in this race she stands a shot, however that seems unlikely.

13) Same Time – 21/1— odyssey

(Day of the Cat x Mogambo x Shahrastani)

Same Time has earned $34,000 in his 3 races.  Both of his races in which he finished in the money were in the Bargain Bred Series races.  His last time out he took the show spot with a speed of 57 at 7 furlongs and was 10 lengths off the leaders at the finish line.  In the previous race he ran a speed of 71 at 6.5 furlongs to break his maiden.  It seems likely that he will find this field too fast and will not be much of a factor in the end.

14) Shoeless Greek – 5/1 — 1917sox

(Heliostatic x Loup Solitaire x Defrere)

Shoeless Greek won his debut with a speed of 72 in a maiden race, but has since found finishing in the money to be quite elusive.  He has raced in 2 stakes races and ran speeds of 78 and 70, but coming away with nothing to show for each.  In his last race he ran in the Art Tilting Stakes with a speed of 70 putting him in last (fifth) which was at 7 furlongs.  His career high speed of 78 comes at a distance of 6.5 furlongs.  If he can return to the speed in the upper 70’s he will certainly have a shot in this race to get back in the money.

15) Valid Hex – 66/1 — clyde4

(Valid Vengeance x Behaviour x Finocchio)

Valid Hex is another colt making his debut.  His sire Valid Vengeance has produced one winner Valid Revenge, both of his wins have been on turf at a distance over 8 furlongs.  It will be difficult to judge this colt by this race as he will not be able to run with the field in his debut as others in this race have had time to gauge their distances and surfaces for this race.

This field will certainly give bettors fits as the top horse seems pretty clear, but the water is certainly muddled after that.  The top horse, also the favorite, must be Players Champion.  With my second pick I will take Box Top as he looks to continue his winning ways on turf.  My final pick goes to Monarch’s Sunshine as the added distance will give him just what he needs to get in the money yet again.  This field certainly makes up the Class Ack of bargain breeds, as they aspire to become the envy of all trainers.

As always good luck to all the trainers involved!
