G1 Breeders’ Bowl Sprint Preview

The Favorite

#6 Kiama Ilfia (Down Under Racing) 6/1 : Had a 5 win race streak where he stamped his dominance as the game’s top sprinter with wins in the G1 Schrutte, G1 Sand Castle, and G1 Equinics. Unfortunately, that was his peak as the last two he has not lived up to that potential. The 3rd in the G1 Binger Handicap wasn’t that bad of a result, but did see a significant drop in his speed figure. The last one I’m not sure I’d chalk up to the off track as he does have a victory on the surface. Best in the game if he can get back to that form. A vulnerable favorite?

The 7/1’s

#2 Outback Garble (MIDAS) 7/1 : Has really been running well going 7 furlongs as he took down the G1 Three Bender, and came 2nd in the G1 Foregone in his latest. Will be interesting to see how the cutback to 6 furlongs affects him as he only has a 4th in a listed stakes going that distance. Does like to be close to the pace, so will just need to make that jump a step early. If he figures it out, will be right there at the end.

#7 Langone (The Mecca) 7/1 : First time trying this distance as he’s been going 7 furlongs lately.  Finished in the top 2 in 9 straight races, so has shown plenty of good form. Took down the G2 Trotter during the streak. Makes the last race in the G1 Forgone a head scratcher. Not only did he come 7th, but the #2 finished 3 lengths ahead of him in that, so not only does he need to regain form, but must turn the tables too. Was that the outlier?

#11 El Sin Nombre (GR Simsters) 7/1 : Took down the G1 Bruce Leeroy back in May and put together a trio of second place finishes since then. Like that he has been going the same distance as today’s sprint, so has lots of experience that others may not have. The downfall is he only has that one victory in more than a year, so as competitive as he is, can we trust him to get on top of the podium?

#14 Relative Humor (MIDAS) 7/1 : Came 2nd in the G1 Equinics back in June and that was the boost this one needed to be way more consistent in these graded stakes. He came off that effort by securing back to back victories in the G2 Sooner-Husker and G2 Game of Chance. Seems like he is a versatile sprinter as he wins at multiple distances and has a couple of graded wins at this distance. One that is in peak form as others seems to be off their game. Serious threat.

Best of the Rest

#13 Tex O’War (No Residency) 8/1 : Most experienced as this will be his 29th trip to the starting gate. Had the nice G1 win to start the year in the Arlo’s Turmoil, but has been very inconsistent since then. Coming in off a pair of 5th place finishes which also includes the step back to a listed stakes in his last effort. In such a big spot I would like to see better form heading into it. Has popped a number before, but feeling at this age is trending in the wrong direction.

#5 Heard on High (No Residency) 9/1 : Nice to see him coming in off the win in the G1 Old Name. Been living his best life out in California and has been competitive in the graded stakes here. Problem is he isn’t the most consistent sort, but his last 4 victories all come at this 6 furlong distance, so if he is going to pull off the minor upset, this would be the spot. Comes in #2 in the “Field In Numbers”, so the data likes him. Intriguing.

#10 Pure Mo (GR Simsters) 9/1 : Have to like his last 2 races the best as it seems he has improved with age. He claimed victory in the G1 Binger Handicap two back, while coming in a hard closing 2nd in the G1 Old Name last out. It was won by the #5, as they will see each other for a 3rd straight race. Checks a lot of boxes as it comes to distance, form, and results. Another one who is alive at a bit of a longer price.

Double Digit Odds

#1 Pec (Elite Racing Club) 11/1 : Fits with the group but seems to be just a cut below the best. Hasn’t won a race in 2024, but has been running in some very competitive spots. The 4th in the G1 Equinics (Field of 16) was a nice race, which was just after the 2nd he ran in the G1 Bruce Leeroy. Of course the concern is he is just going to fill out the tri tickets at best. Feel the odds are probably fair for this one.

#4 Lucky Gilbert (Empire State Racing) : Winner of 12 of 15 races which is impressive at any level. Majority of those starts were strictly against Ohio breds, but he has started to face open company in the last few. He really didn’t skip a beat as he won the G3 Cracked Peanuts and G1 Symphony of Speed in his normal front running style. Will come to North America now to face the best in the game, so will have to deal with another major class boost.  A fun entry into the field.

#12 Magnanime (Latinos Del Mundo) 16/1 : Winner of 4 in a row since the switch back to dirt. The last two are the most impressive with wins in the G3 Cyber Attack and G1 Iceberg. Both were run on an off-track, but he has shown he can handle the fast stuff as well. Don’t think he’s faced as good of a field as he will face here before. However, he is coming in hot which is what you want to be doing at this point in the year. Anyone one who adds an interesting mix to the field.

The 3 Year Old Longshots

#9 Upper Corner (The Mecca) 28/1 : 7 out of 10 victories is a nice way to start the career. Has victories in the G1 Blackout, G1 Dude, and G1 Sam Saves The Day. Those were all against 3 year olds and were mixed with some rather uninspiring off the board finishes. His speed figure works in this group, but has never faced the quality he is about to face now. Big ask facing older for the first time.

#8 Spyro The Dragon (Universal Racing Club) 33/1 : Just started facing graded company in his last 3, but came out of those with wins in the G2 Mary Bellium and G1 Prince’s Knight. The other result was disappointing, but looked more like the part in that last one as the speed figure also had a nice jump. Facing older for the first time also, and have to think he’s just here for the experience.

#3 Tales of Fraud (DelPenn National) 35/1 : Winner of the Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Sprint last year, he will tackle older horses here as the longest shot in the field. Winner of the G1 Wallace and G2 Going Aerial since then, but was barely breaking the 100 barrier before that huge jump in the last race. Was it a step in the right direction or will he bounce? Either way, figure he is in tough.

Thanks for a great write-up…especially liked the Field in Numbers, very inciteful…not sure my Ohio Bred will compete against all these KY Breds, but he’s sure earned this chance….good luck to all

Great article Jeremy, I always enjoy your previews and the statistics your Field In Numbers provides. It gives your articles a very individual and unique look. Plus your opinions on each horse are usually right on the mark.
Must of course “lodge” my vote for Kiama Ilfia to do the Equinics/Breeders Bowl double

    Excellent article…

I’ll go with the “now” horse, Relative Humor. He’s coming to this race at the top of his game.

Rooting for Lucky Gilbert and my man Trotter. Another great preview by another excellent BTB journalist.

Thanks for the great article; my runner PEC tried hard but fell just short, like you called it.
