Top trainers clash in Dayatthespa S.
Eight distaffers have entered the box for the Dayatthespa S. sponsored by Cvbear. It’s a heavyweight rematch between last years winner, Mob Assassin XL, trained by Kingranch stables, and the show runner, Tuff Kitty, trained by the notorious Stoners. Top flight three-year-olds including Kingab’s The Giant’s Palace, and Trotter1’s Saint Frankel, are trying to make their names known here.
Mob Assassin XL used her victory in last years edition as a launching pad for Graded company efforts, including a strong 3rd in the Queen of New York Turf Special. She took most of the summer off, and has been campaigned lightly in the fall by Kingranch, dominating a pair of local allowance races with this race as her target. Her rider C Orza will likely have her in stalking position early. She is a deserving 9/5 co morning line favorite from post two. She is sired by Derby winner Big Brown, out of the SW Sadlers Wells mare Tattenham Corner
Stoners has taken a slightly different path bringing Tuff Kitty back to the CVbear Champions Day. She has raced almost exclusively in local company, taking down the Hettinger in her last start, as a prep for this one. She ran a strong 3rd against the boys in a local championship stakes in her prior start. In last years edition, she sat second around there but was no match at all for Mob Assassin XL when they turned for home. Will J Bensiz have her more forwardly placed this year? The daughter of Frost Giant, is the best performer from her Kitten’s Joy dam, Tuff Riffs
Two legendary sim trainers, Kingab and Trotter1 will be trying to challenge the favorites with three-year-old performers, both from Frankel dams, true royalty in NY Bred competition. Kingab has listed H Ross to ride his daughter of Big Brown, The Giant’s Palace, who has never missed the board in 10 starts, on both surfaces. Distance may be bit of a question for The Giant’s Palace on form, as she has only two tries at route distances, both leading to runner up performances. Her dam, Palace Betrayal was a crackerjack sprinter, can the staying power of her sire get her the extra furlong? She may try to blaze to the front here. Stalwart trainer Trotter1 has Saint Frankel all revved up for this spot, bringing her off a 75 day layoff after a dominate allowance. While distance is not a question for her here, class certainly is, as she took six starts to break her maiden, and her only stakes try led to an off the board finish. She tries to give her sire, Fog of War, just his second sim stakes winner.
There are several other interesting contenders here, the most experienced of the group being Arkouda from beholder racing. The eight-year-old daughter of Alpha has changed hands twice already this year, and has never tried the turf in her 27 race career. She is a classy old performer and her dam has produced a pair of good turf performers, but she is going to have to against the grain here to get a win. Coming out of the claiming ranks is Maclean Ave, a daughter of Normandy Invasion from the G3 winner Street Lemon trained by metallinut stables. She has been a gifted claiming performer, but has yet to show this level of class. Distance should not be an issue; it will be interesting to see if jockey S Tate uses her early speed form post five. The outside two performers including mtk76’s Looin at the Storm, a strong local claiming performer, who is taking a big step up here. She did run competitively against open company in a starter allowance last time, but is an outsider today. Cool Lady, from Millerfarm stables, has the outside post. The daughter of Destin has tangled with these before, racing 4th in the Hettinger S. She likes the lead, can she get away on the front to crown herself champion?
This is an interesting race with runners from some of the most well-known trainers in sim history. The two older performers, Mob Assassin XL and Tuff Kitty look to just be speed figures ahead of the field, but don’t count out Trotter and Kingab with three-year-olds Saint Frankel and The Giant’s Palace.
The Green Sheet Picks!
- Tuff Kitty – Stoners makes a statement here with a victory with his red-hot performer. Needs to get the jump on her rivals today
- Mob Assassin XL – Hard to knock her, probably deserves to be the sole favorite
- The Giant’s Palace – Most likely upsetter, she just needs to stay the distance. If she does, could pop with a huge number.
