Unicef RECAP Mach Red Leaves Writer Reddder

One mile
Fast Dirt
$1,000,000
Fillies and mares, 4 years old and up

There comes a point in every BTB writer’s career when a horse they wrote off as having less than a prime time chance knocks over the apple cart. This leaves said writer covered with apple sauce. Saturday Mach Red’s gold medal performance did just that to yours truly. For a look at how the 4 year old filly made me look silly continue on with this article. If you get shy about embarrassing moments for others this article may not be for you.

THE FIELD

PP 1 133730 SPINNING QUEST TR inaspin JKY P Haynes ML 26/1

The 4 year old daughter of Coronado’s Quest x Spinning World x Secretariat was predicted to be a pace factor and not much else. She broke slower than expected and never really got involved. The 102 was a nice spf though and bodes well for the future for Ireland and Inaspin.

PP 2 STAR OF THE NORTH TR snappa5 JKY V Gardner 9/1

EAAA Racing sent out the 4 year old daughter of Seeking The Gold x Northern Dancer x Seattle Slew which I expected to be right there when stretch run begins. She was coming hard late and finished 4^th but the winner refused to be caught by anyone. Hard luck and a photo keeps her off the podium

PP 3 131557 PYE ARE SQUARED TR jeffdrew JKY O Kopper 10/1

EWC sent out a lovely daughter of Viscount x Rahy x Mr P who had won her last two. I feared a bounce off the 114. Well something went awry for jeffdrew’s trainee who never fired and finished second last. It will be one you’ll draw a line through in the PP charts.

PP 4 101638 FART NO MORE TR dundey4 JKY S Gravina 14/1

Minnesota sent out a daughter of Brahms x Pentelicus x Bold Ruler who is made her third start since July 5th. I did not give her much chance and she ran like she may have been a touch short coming in here. Not her best effort and a nice break may refresh this one back to the top of her game.

PP 5 122633 CLOUT TR lasthope JKY D Givins 12/1

Vermont’s favorite daughter of Storm Cat x Seeking the Gold x Alydar was predicted to shrug off a poor performance leading up to this race. Unfortunately that lead up was a portent of bad things to come as she ran up the track. Lasthope may be back to the drawing board with his charge.

PP 6 64388 GOLD BERNSTEIN TR meguire6th JKY M Murano 18/1

Blazing Saddles Bernstein x Goldminer’s Gold x Gilded time was thought to be talented and in good form, yet perhaps over her head.. That is pretty much how it worked out. Sometimes a trainer takes one for the team and meguire did so here.

PP 7 110773 CAROL OF THE BELLS TR deyoto3 JKY B Renfroe 9/1

Queensland offered us the millionaire daughter of Hennesy x Private Account x Dr Fager. I expected this one to make a lot of noise, but something went drastically wrong and Carol finished dead last. We hope that when deyoto gets her back to the barn all is well.

PP 8 111300 SWEET SISTER MERCY TR zwango1 JKY F Gossett 9/1

Champion Del Penn sent out the legendary daughter of Kingmambo x NijinskyII x Secretariat. The defending Breeders Bowl Distaff champ was all out for 6^th here as traffic and Mach Red were too much to overcome.

PP 9 125734 INCONTATO TR  taffy JKY V Jennings 16/1

Rash’s daughter of Congaree x Lost Code x Fappiano had a nice string of allowance efforts on her card. I thought she might be sitting on some excitement for her fans and she was. Her BRONZE medal performance came while well out running her odds and while she4 never really threatened the winner, it was still a super performance and one I know Taffy is super proud of.

PP 10 131721 CRYFORMEDIXIE TR hornedfrog JKY P Cadigan 25/1

Kentucky Horsemen had the daughter of Streetcry x Dixieland Band x Turn-To as their entry. I thought she was not at her best at the moment and she really wasn’t. She never really found her footing on the fast dirt and ran a race that was proud effort but less than her best.

PP 11 92404 K’S FINNANCIER TR sledwith JKY R Lilbitfarm 10/1

Hispano Parlante old lady Forty Niner x Seattle Slew x Buckpasser conceded nothing to the younger gals.  I thought she would not out run her odds. She ran a real nice race that on another day may have been a great race. It was just not good enough here.

PP 12 121761 BALANCE TR chloedawg JKY B Child 15/1

Northwest Racing Circuit’s chosen standard bearer was the daughter of Thunder Gulch x Kris S x Forli. I thought she may make the podium for a medal. Instead the very consistent gal threw a clunker here and was well beaten. Another who got lost in the back.

PP 13 WOETTE’S STATUE TR plstable JKY W McClendon 11/1

Benelux sent out my choice the daughter of Statue of Liberty x Kris S x Hawaii. I thought around mid race I may have been right. But woe to Woette she was outkicked by several of the other ladies and despite a thrilling effort she finished 7^th.

PP 14 129625 DESECRATION SMILE TR daninja JKY A Rolling 11/1

GRSimsters day in a microcosm may have been represented by this daughter  Unbridled’s Song x AP Indy x Bold Bidder. She made a stunning move showing a burst only found in the best of horses. Alas her freight train finish was only good enough for Silver as her charge ran out of track. SILVER medals are nothing to sneeze at though. I am sure daninja is super proud of this super filly.

PP 15 35061 EIRENE TR airtiger JKY J White 24/1

Alpine Turf Club’s daughter of Johannesburg x Affirmed x Topsider did not appear to be in her best form. When the gate opened she dropped to dead last and was only able to pick off a few in the stretch. Still running in the biggest event of the sim season is a cause for deep pride.

PP 16 24748 SUZYNINER TR snag JKY H McCoy 11/1

The CR Racers scintillating daughter of Forty Niner x Danzig x Nijinsky II had not won since April and still hasn’t. She ran a huge race and was just a few hairs from being on the podium. Her exciting charge came from a bit too far back to catch the winner and she was a bit unlucky to not win a medal of some type finishing 5^th with a 105 spf.

PP 17 76922 MACH RED TR troync5 JKY B F Abman 22/1

Great Plains selection committee of one picked the winning daughter of Red Ransom x Machiavellian x Hoist The Flag. Her speed figs were lower than the best in this field and had come against softer company. But while I was looking elsewhere for my winner, smart money was being place on her beak.  Mach Red sat just off the sizzling pace and swept by them when it was winning time. She just outlasted the fast closing Desecration Smile by nearly a length. Her 110 spf was a career best. Brilliant ride, fantastic training, shrewd selction = Glorious Upset. Say hello to you Equinics champ Mach Red. GOLD medal winner.

PP 18 111496 BOODHA TR boolucas JKY N Lawton 16/1

This super fine daughter of Buddha x Belong to Me x What a Pleasure set the dazzling pace that would bottom most of this field out. She also found that pace to be too much for her to carry for 8f. Around the third call she packed it in and faded back into the pack. Still to get a few calls in a equinics race is no shame.

THE OUTCOME

It was a wide open and balanced field of top older gals and I want to thank them and their connection for running one of the most exciting races of the day here in Vermont. Legends fell and writers rep’s took it the chops. Mach Red’s lifetime best performance came at long odds and in the best spot possible. You have to feel for Desecration Smile because her effort would have desecrated most fields but here was only good for Silver. The battle for third was real tight and Incontato lucked out over two other super game horse to take home the Bronze medal. What a day, what a race. Congrats to all that participated.
