Favorite without turf win.

The 10th race feature in Minnesota this week is back on the Supertoy Lawn. As part of the Minnesota Residency 10th Race Feature Contest, any resident who wins this race will be awarded their choice of a homebred. This week two residents have entered, Darnath and Deelynette. All horses, in addition to the purse money, are racing for a miniature statue of a tadpole in a Supertoy costume. It is a highly sort after prize
1. MICKEY MOUSE(ENG) -epcotlen5 -E R Cothill – 16/1

Ohio Thoroughbred Racing and Epcotlen Stables sends this Cacique colt makes his first trip over this turf. Last time out, Mickey Mouse made his first stakes attempt, but only placed in a four horse race. This distance is a first for Mickey and he’s 0-3 in routes thus far in his career. His best career run came two back in a 7 furlong race where he lead throughout and posted a nice 92 speed. The breeding generally suggests that he’ll be able to get the distance, but for a first try this race may have been an ambitious choice by epcotlen and thus the long shot odds.

2. ELUSIVE RATS(KY) -drdm – S Upertoy – 19/1

Darnath puts his superior placement skills to the test as he takes this twelve race veteran into his first stakes. This mare is on a two race win streak, and has won 3 of 4. Only thing is that all of those wins were in sprints, two of them were on off dirt, and none of his races were over this grass. Sired by Elusive Quality, Elusive Rats also has Affirmed and Ella Mana Mou bloood in him, so the distance should not be an issue, unless you believe that her success in sprints suggests she likes those races better. She was 0-3 in routes as a 2 year old, but she has matured since. She posted a career best 92 last race over 6 furlongs and will have to show she can do similar at this distance in order to win here.

3. JEU PEACOCK(IRE) -irt1 – P Green – 7/2

Iant brings this inexperienced colt out of Monjeu and ships in from Colorado. This will be his fourth career race, all over the turf and all in routes. His career thus far has set up nicely for this first stakes try as he has won 2 of 3 and already has 43k in earnings. Both wins saw Jeu Peacock sit just off the lead until just about the third call. Iant will have to over come jockey P. Green’s 4% wp this year. Any showing that this colt can make the extra furlong will make him hard to beat.

4. YELLOWCOAT(ENG) -queens – O Stinson – 46/1

The extreme long shot by Orlando, a DelPenn resident, moves from claimers straight into stakes. The Halling colt has never posted a speed over 75, but has tried this distance before. This is his first try in Minnesota, and his first for trainer queens. This placing seems extremely ambitious for Yellowcoat, but you know what they say: You gotta be in it to win it.

5. YEPES(KY) -sonsierra – B Craver – 9/2

Minnesota Resident Rafa shows off one of the non-Minnesota horses here in Yepes. The Forestry colt has 3 wins in a row, all in routes at or longer than this distance. Last out he won in a stakes race that was on an off turf in North Dakota. Yepes has never seen the Minnesota grass before – a negative, but has run a 100 SP # only two back over 11 furlongs – a positive. All five of this colts wins have seen him at least 3 furlongs back and as much as 7-3/4 furlongs back. If the leaders can’t get the distance today, look for Yepes to run them down.

6. TEMPORAL SPRING(ENG) – mav176 – K Bowen- 5/2

Today’s favorite comes to us from the GR simsters and Deadinthelane Stables. He gets the services of Bowen who is one of the top jockeys here. The Pivatol colt has never run in Minnesota before, and has never won over the grass. His three grass runs all ended up as places. He has run in stakes company since December including a couple of graded tries. His last turf race was three back in late March, which had him run a 90 over 8 furlongs. The distance will be new to him and he hasn’t won yet as a 3 year old. Although listed as a favorite, it would suprise if Temporal Spring pulled this off.

7. WAMPUS CAT(IRE) – snakebite-J O Bluehorse – 5/1

Blackhawk, from DelPenn, sends this Hawk Wing colt. The colt has 3 wins all on turf, but two of them were on wet grass. Never having run further than 9 furlongs and never having run in Minnesota, Wampus Cat has earned 71k and has posted speed as high as 95. Although a huge crowd favorite, jockey Bluehorse only has won 6% of her races. Wampus Cat has the cards staked against him, but is certainly capable.

8. BUX R BACK(WV) – buxnation- J Happy – 17/1

Buxnation belongs to the EZmoney stables who is unassociated with a residency. Minnesota Residency officials will be actively recruiting EZmoney this weekend, as they show him the Johnno Pub and the new luxury Theodore Casino located conveniently adjacent to the grounds. Little used jock Happy gets the ride today as he looks to improve on his 2.3 winning percentage this year. The colt by Valid Indy runs his 5th career race, after having been successful his last two times out over the grass. He visits Minnesota for the first time after having enjoyed his time at Belmont. EZmoney has decided to stretch him out a little here. Any improvement at all makes this 17/1 shot a good bet, especially in your exotics.

9. COZZANE HILL(KY) -zibby – K Friar – 3/1

Minnesota Residency is represented also by Deelynette with Cozzane Hill. The track best jockey Friar has decided to ride this near favorite. This colt by Cozzene has spent her entire career on the turf and is the only horse in this race that has visited this track before. That race, the Get Well Soon Supertoy7 Stakes in March was over 9 furlongs and was won by Cozzane Hill with a 100 SP factor. Cozzane has run as far as 9.5 furlongs, but never at today’s distance. Last time out in Texas, Cozzane Hill’s 106 was only good enough for second.

Chuck’s Picks
Win: Cozzane Hill(KY)
Place: Yepes(KY)
Show: Bux R Back(WV)

What’s Happening in Minnesota?

We are back up and running now and most of the contests are back in full swing. It has been announced that Came Home will sire our next Sire Series, details which will be worked out in the next couple of weeks. Most of the residents are preparing for Smackdown next week, as we hope we make a solid showing. Spotlight was on our BP Stable Contest – the brainchild of well known simster PazzJazz, as not only does it transform itself into a group effort to breed prizes, it also finishes up the current 13 week cycle.
