MD Distaff G3 Wrap Up
Oh well, all good things must come to an end. Our hopes for a triple crown try were dashed on the rocks when Kissin Streetcry was beaten in the second jewel and any hope that I was a hot handicapper went out the window when Bold Peggy left her best stride back in the paddock. Conniecpu was probably more distressed than I was that her classy grey mare decided to take the day off but I am sure I lost more money. Shortly after the gate opened Cat Mill (deelynette) got loose on the lead and by mid race was two lengths clear of the field. Hidden’s three year old Prayer of Love chased a along greenly outside in second but she faded into obscurity once the real running began. Matress’ Early Spring coiled herself right behind the teeny bopper and waited patiently. Fusiachi Indeed was in perfect position but never fired. Applestone’s Memoirsofageisha was right in the middle of the hunt group and ultimately ran a huge race to finish 5th (A special apology to this duo for giving them grief and getting this nice mare’s name wrong in the preview article). They clearly had the race doped better than I did. Rawhide (
By the time we reached the third call the real race began. It was clear Cat Mill was not going to have enough to wire the field and Early Spring loomed large, but the clouds held lightning and swooping down out them was a blur of flashing hooves. Foremost among the late closers was Fiat’s Buda at the Rodeo but none was coming faster than seeking49er’s Glorious Morning and these two had company in the form of pjlracing’s The Tormentor. The Tormentor (sp 103) did live up to her name again and ran a close up fourth just good enough to miss hitting the board. When Buda at the Rodeo and Glorious Morning swept by the rest the only challenger remaining was Early Spring. Early Spring ran a tremendous race and had folks holding tickets with her number on it pumping arms and clutching tight but ultimately unless those wagers said show on them they were just wasted paper. Buda at the Rodeo surged by Early Spring and locked horns with the hard charging Glorious Morning. Buda at the Rodeo would not be denied and hung on to win with Glorious Morning second. It was a great race and even though all my tickets were swept up by the maintenance workers I had a great time. Buda at the Rodeo covered the mile and an eighth in 1:48 1/5 good for a spf of 105. Glorious morning also received a 105 and the game Early Spring rounded at the trifecta with a 104 just more than a length away from glory.
Fiat was jubilant that Buda was finally a graded winner, and the celebration carried on late into the night. I stumbled into the connections in the wee hours and asked what was next for Buda, but either I can’t remember what was said or I never got an answer. Couldn’t find Glorious Mornings connections in the sulkers bar where I was leading the sulking after blowing much of my winnings from the week before. Mattress was very pleased with Early Spring’s run and we can expect to see her in graded company again next out. All in all, it was a great day down in MD, although I may need an M.D. to cure this hangover. Happy racing fans!
