Minimum field for The THELI Handicap Stakes

The THELI Handicap Stakes

Seven and half furlongs

Firm Turf

$65,000

Fillies and mares, 3 years old

With all the large fields in 3yo racings graded races this week it’s perhaps understandable that some of the stakes should be low on runners.   However this is a very disappointing turn-out with just three genuine entries and a computer-filler.  The runners are:

La Beggar(IRE)

Trainer: *computer

(Another Bob x Blood Royal x Milkie)

Odds: 31/1                  Earnings: 19,817                    Runs/Wins: 13/1

A scratch breed bred by spiked who never managed to coax her into a better position than 4th before disposing of her.  Won a starter featuring solely computer trained fillies as a 3yo,  but is generally exactly what you’d expect from a computer trained horse.  Absolutely no chance of winning and probably be lucky to get 4th.

Chr Malgata(IRE)

Trainer: pillowtopo

(Mujadil x Surumu(GER) x Son Of Briartic)

Odds: 7/2                    Earnings: 69,505                    Runs/Wins: 7/1

A scratchbred filly from cado804w.genieSt.chalmetteLa.70043 and bred by christi.  She was claimed from her first race and eventually managed a win a few races later.  I can’t really see her winning a stakes race but reckon she could be a reasonable allowance runner in the future – especially over longer distances. Nice placement by her trainer ensures her of at least a 3rd place here.

Moi Lolita(KY)

Trainer: ceclaim3

(Awesome Again x A.P. Indy x Kingmambo)

Odds: 6/5                    Earnings: 107,025                  Runs/Wins: 9/3

A scratchbred filly from Royal Belgian Kempen Farm. She did well on dirt as a 2yo managing 1 stakes win, but switched to turf last time and looked fairly comfortable, though she didn’t set any records.  She’s had to travel a long way to find this race and could prove to be a thorn in the favourite’s side.  Hard to predict what her tactics will be as she seems happy leading or hanging back but I suspect she will spend most of the race simply chasing the favourite.

Miss Cool(ENG)

Trainer: key

(Dansili (GB) x Galileo (IRE) x Unbridled’s Song)

Odds: 4/5                    Earnings: 43,115                    Runs/Wins: 5/3

A filly from Coolk Stables based on an E grade horse.  She’s quickly found her feet, winning 3 races in quick order, but disappointed in her first stakes run last time, however that was over 6 furlongs and I would expect her to do better over this longer distance.  An odds on front running favourite so don’t be surprised if she dominates this race from the very start as she will be hard to catch.

Summary

I always remember reading some unnamed persons betting system which was simply backing the outsider in a 4 horse race.  They may not win very often but you get such generous odds that over time you would end up in front.  However not being an idiot (well not always anyway, but that’s another story), I think that would be a very fast route to the poorhouse in this race as the outsider should be far greater odds than 31/1 to get any value at all – and it stands very little chance of beating anything else here.  Essentially it seems to me to be a 2 horse race, Miss Cool(ENG) may be an odds on favourite but she looks a far better bet than Moi Lolita(KY) who will be chasing all the way.
