Gold Strike in New York

A very non-reported event occured this past weekend in the 15th race in New York. The race featured a full field of 14 first-time 2 year olds going in a 5.5F sprint. Trainer Bussbarn had two entries going, both huge longshots. Goodwill, who went off at 108-1 finished 12th. But there was one horse with steeper odds, his stablemate, Golden Lawn.

Golden Lawn ended up winning the race beating 3-1 Duke of Normandy by a nose. One track official stated that the photo was so close, it took the Stewards nearly 10 minutes to make the race official. Golden Lawn lit the board, paying an incredible $274.10 for the win. Jockey Staff, in a phone interview, stated that he was “…more surprised than anyone. The horse just charged out of the gate and wouldn’t stop running. Two year olds are very unpredictable”.

We have heard rumors that several of the tote board lights blew out with the high payoffs. The exacta paid out $1193.80 and the trifecta $9,224.20. Congratulations to Buzzbarn and all the winners who had this one.
