Fine day in Newmarket for the G1 Eclipse Stakes
Eclipse Stakes – Newmarket – Saturday 17th October 2020 at 3.00pm EST.
Grade 1/Group 1 $3 Million Restricted to 3yo+.
10 Furlongs/2000m Turf.
Great field lined up for this Grade 1 in Newmarket on Saturday. Weather is predicted to be fine and the track firm for this $3 million dollar event. We have some nice horses lined up and some up and comers as well. Let’s take a look at the field.
- 51112 – Blowie (Siyouni) Owned by nwo4life33. – Jockey – R. Zombie – 13/1
4yo colt who has been racing mainly on Dirt lately. Record of 28-5-7-6 and banking just over $250k. However, he has a record on Turf of 6-0-2-1. He also has never been up against this level of horse. Last start he ran 2nd in a 10F allowance Dirt. Sat 5th just off the speed and made a late charge to just miss by ¼ of a length, running an SP of 105. Prior to that he won a 9F allowance race on Dirt. He was 5th in the run over 6 lengths off them before picking up strongly in the stretch to win easily by over 2 lengths and running an SP of 114. His last run on the Turf was back in May 2019, where he ran in a 4.5F claimer and was 2nd beaten a head running an SP of 79. His best turf effort was a 3rd in an 8F claimer back in May 2019. He ran on well although beaten just under 4 lengths and running an SP of 91. He did improve markedly when put on the dirt however it is unknown what he can produce on turf as his efforts over this distance on dirt have been quite good. Very interesting runner who would prefer to see before backing with any confidence.
2. 14122 – Master of Ribbons (Pivotal) Owned by hofcadet. – Jockey – A. Jolly – 8/1
Another 4yo with a nice record of 14-4-4-3 and banking just under $1.4 million. Again, another who has been racing very consistently. Last start he was 2nd in the G1 Windy City Turf Classic 10F. He was well back in 14th some 14 lengths from the leaders before unleashing a powerful finishing burst to be only beaten just under 2 lengths, running an SP of 116. Prior to that was another 2nd in the G3 Coupe 10F. He sat 6th only 3 lengths from the leaders. He then rallied in the stretch although well held, beaten just over a length and running an SP of 113. Prior to that he won the G1 Good Day 10.5F. He was well back in 10th some 10 lengths from the leaders at half- way before again finishing powerfully to win running away by over 2 lengths and running an SP of 113. He raced prior to that on an off track in the Darkdoun Turf Endurance 11F finishing 4th. He again sat well back in 6th around 13 lengths from the leaders. He did run on well although well held in the end, beaten 5.5 lengths and running an SP of 102. He won the Crown Chief Turf Route 10.5F the start before that. He was well positioned in 4th albeit 8.5 lengths from the lead at half- way, he then unleashed that powerful finish to win easily in the end by just under 4 lengths running an SP of 115. He is a deep closer and the speed in this race sets it up for him. Another with a big chance depending on the pattern/bias.
3. 32892 – Hand of Kane (Teofilo) Owned by jbcri9. – Jockey – T. Ace – 6/1
5yo with a nice record of 22-7-4-2 and just over $1.3 million in the bank. Has been thereabouts lately and looking for his first win this year. Last time out he finished 2nd in the Local Championship Stakes at Ireland over 10F. He was a long way back in 18th position around 15 lengths from the leaders. He made a strong move in the stretch but couldn’t pick up the winner, beaten under 3 lengths and running an SP of 114. The start prior he was 9th in the G1 Eclipsed Stakes 10F, where again he was well back in 13th some 15 lengths from the leaders. He made some ground in the stretch but was beaten 7.5 lengths and running an SP of 107. Before that he was 8th in the G1 Tattersalls Gold 10.5F. He settled in 8th that day and made no impression fading throughout to be beaten 11.5 lengths and running an SP of 102. He was a brilliant 2nd in the G1 Aussie Queen 10F prior to that. He settled 10th around 15 lengths from the speed before winding up strongly in the stretch to be beaten only a length on the line and running an SP of 117. If you forgive his two unplaced starts recently then he has a big chance in this. Just needs to be back to that form. Chance.
4. 11231 – Impactxia (Deep Impact) Owned by oldburyred. – Jockey – J. Ledwith – 6/1
Stunning 4yo who is in terrific form. Overall 15-7-3-3 with a bankroll of just over $2.2 million. Just so consistent. Last start he won the G1 Champion Stakes 10F beating home Comprehend who ran 3rd. He led all the way that day and won well by 1.5 lengths running an SP of 116. Prior to that he ran 3rd in the G2 Bayside Triumph 10F. He sat 5th that day and although moving through the pack in the stretch he was well held, beaten over 6 lengths and running an SP of 112. Prior to that was a nice effort for 2nd in the G1 NY Island Cap 10F. He settled 6th in the run that day only 2-3 lengths off the lead. He rallied late to go down by just under a length and running an SP of 114. He won the In a General Tizzy Turf Route 10F prior to that. He sat 3rd some 3 lengths from the lead before closing strongly and winning by a widening 4 lengths running an SP of 111. Prior to that was an allowance victory over 10F, leading all the way to win easily by 2.5 lengths and running an SP of 113. Think he leads them here and if he does, he will be very difficult to run down. Great chance.
5. 42313 – Comprehend (Galileo) Owned by davarto. – Jockey – F. Gossett – 6/1
Nice 4yo colt owned by sim favourite Davarto. Stats are 16-5-3-3 with over $1.5 Million in the bank. He has been racing very consistently of late. Last start ran 3rd in the G1 Champion Stakes 10F. He settled back in 7th some 7 lengths from the lead. He closed very well late to be beaten 1.5 lengths and running an SP of 115. The start prior he won the G1 Prince of Wales 10F. He sat 5th only about 4 lengths from the pace before running on strongly the last furlong to win running away by nearly 2 lengths and running an SP of 117. He was 5th in the G1 Queens Spring Cup 10F at his start prior. He was again 5th in running nearly 8 lengths off them, before running home although well beaten in the end by 5 lengths running an SP of 112. He ran 2nd in the G2 No Graded Stakes at 9.5F. He was again well positioned in 4th before making steady progress in the straight to be beaten 2.5 lengths. Loves the trip and has been running really well. Should sit off them and produce a strong finish. Big chance.
6. 76223 – Lord De Seis (Frankel) Owned by sender4. – Jockey – H. Knott – 10/1
Another son of Frankel who is in some nice form of late, just can’t crack it for the win. Record 21-3-5-3 and banking just over $230k. Last start he ran a nice race when 3rd in the G3 Chosen Stakes 10F. Sat 3rd in the run and maintained that throughout just picking up late on the line to be beaten just under 2 lengths and running an SP of 115. Prior to that he ran 2nd in a 10F allowance race in Denmark. He sat 2nd that day some 8 lengths from the leader but couldn’t real him in although he rallied strong late to be beaten a neck and running an SP of 110. He was 2nd in another 10F allowance race in QLD. He sat 5th and although he made steady progress in the run, he couldn’t pick up the win, beaten 3 lengths and running an SP of 111. He ran 6th in a 10.5F allowance race in UAE prior to that. He was 7th early and made no impression in the run, fading late to be beaten 10.5 lengths. He was beaten a combined 30 lengths in his previous 2 G1 efforts which will probably see him struggle here. If he can run a career best, he would be some chance.
7. 01632 – Enormous Edge (More Than Ready) Owned by mtklegacy. – Jockey – M. Kelly – 7/1
6yo horse who has been in nice form his last few starts. Overall record of 21-7-2-3 and banked just over $660k. Last start he was 2nd in the Zanzabar Turf Route 9.5F. He led the race all the way until collared the last furlong and only beaten a length running an SP of 116. He was 3rd in the G2 Kinsho Cho Classic 10F prior to that. He again led for most of the way, opening up by over 5 lengths at one stage only to be run down the last furlong. He was beaten just under 3 lengths running an SP of 111. He was 6th in the G1 Queens Spring Cup 10F just behind Comprehend. He tried to lead all the way and was still in front with a furlong to go. He was swamped late to be beaten 9 lengths and running an SP of 108. Prior to that he won a 9F allowance race in SAF. He led all the way there, opening a lead of over 10 lengths with a furlong to go. He just held on to win by ¼ length and running an SP of 114. Before that was a 10th in the G1 Jolly Summer Cup 10F last year. Class may be just beyond him as he has struggled a little in G1 races however if he can repeat his last effort when 2nd he would be a chance. There is so much pace in the race just don’t see him leading this and if that’s the case may struggle.
8. 53142 – King Tormax (Giant’s Causeway) Owned by stoners. – Jockey – C. Wyatt – 5/1
5yo horse with a great record overall of 22-6-6-4 and banking just over $450k. Has been racing really well of late. Last start was very impressive when 2nd in the G2 Bernie Baruch 9F. He sat well back in 14th some 10 lengths off them at half-way before storming home to be only beaten ¼ length on the line and running an SP of 120. Prior to that he was 4th in the G3 De Vichy 10F. He was well back again in 8th only 5 lengths from the lead mid-race. He finished on ok however was well held in the end, beaten by just under 4 lengths and running an SP of 114. He won the G3 Brigadier 10F the start before. He was again mid-pack some 9.5 lengths from the leaders. He then finished strongly in the straight to win running away by 2 lengths and running an SP of 112. He was 3rd in the Dom Tendencies Turf Special 9.5 prior to that. He was well back in 8th some 12 lengths from the leader’s mid-race. He then unleashed a furious finish to go down by under 2 lengths with an SP of 116. He is another deep closer and with speed to burn here it should set up nicely for him. Again, depends on speed of the race but another with a big chance.
9. 11108 – Gumption (Heart’s Cry) Owned by qstick. – Jockey – D. Evans – 18/1
4yo who was in great form prior to the last two starts. Overall record 13-4-0-5 and bank of just over $320k. Last start he struggled in the G3 Plaid Skirt 10F. He finished 8th beaten over 10 lengths. He settled in 9th around 9 lengths from the leaders but struggled to improve in the run. The start prior he was 10th in the G1 Manha Manha Challenge 10F. He settled 5th in the run only 5 lengths off them early before fading throughout and beaten over 14 lengths in the end. He won the G2 Hardcourt 10F prior to those two failures. He was in a nice position in 5th only 3-4 lengths from the speed before closing very strongly in the stretch to win easily by nearly 2 lengths running an SP of 111. He won two allowance races over 9.5F (116SP) and 10F (102 SP) prior to those races. He was really impressive in those 3 wins prior to the last two failures and not sure what happened there. If he reverts back to his prior form, he is a big chance in this.
10. 14271– Jajapringi (Iffraaj) Owned by suicidas2. – Jockey – D. Matas – 8/1
4yo colt with record of 20-3-10-2 and banking just over $330k. He is always around the money just not often the win. Last start however he did win impressively in the G3 Chosen Stakes 10F. He led all the way to win the event by 1 length and running an SP of 117. Start prior he was 7th in the G1 Judgemont International 10.5F. He jumped in 3rd and couldn’t lead that day. He was beaten a long way out and faded to be beaten 6.5 lengths And, running an SP of 108. Prior to that he ran 2nd in the G3 Weld Stakes 10F. He again led for most of the way opening up by nearly 7 lengths at one stage however he was run down late to be beaten just over 2 lengths and running an SP of 115. Before that he was 4th in the G1 Prince of Wales 10F behind Comprehend. He couldn’t lead that day and sat 3rd. He took over around the turn but couldn’t hold on, fading late to be beaten just under 4 lengths with an SP of 113. He easily won a 10.5F allowance race before that. Leading all the way he made it look easy in the end winning by over 3 lengths and running an SP of 111. If he can get an uncontested lead, he would be hard to beat. With so much speed in the race however that is going to make things difficult. Chance if he can lead.
11. 61592– Ivory Barbara (English Channel) Owned by shannonbarn. – Jockey – B F Abman – 18/1
4yo colt with a record of 18-4-2-5 and bank of just over $110k. Hasn’t seen anything like this field before but has been on ok form. Last time out he finished 2nd in the Duck Wow Turf Route 9F. Sat 4th about 3 lengths off them before picking up in the stretch and only beaten ¾ of a length, running an SP of 114. Prior to that he ran 9th in the Nirvana Filter Turf Stayer 11F. He was well back in 8th in the race and struggled to pick up. He finished more than 35 lengths off the winner in that race and ran an SP of 88. Prior to that he was 5th in the Worldflys Wells Turf Route 9.5F. He sat back in 10th early some 8 lengths from the leaders. He did pick up late to be beaten just under 5 lengths running an SP of 106. Prior to that he won an allowance race 9F in KS. He sat back in 6th before running no well and taking over with a furlong to go and winning easily by 2 lengths and running an SP of 113. May struggle with the step up in grade and also the distance as he struggled over 11F. If he runs the distance, he would be an outside chance of some minor money.
12. 11211 – Toy With The Field (Savabeel) Owned by redhill. – Jockey – K. Ledwith – 10/1
Lovely 4yo colt with terrific record of 20-11-6-0 and banking just over $270k. He looks ready for the step up in grade today. Last start he won the Orthoclase Turf Route 9.5F. He sat back in 6th some 6 lengths from the leaders before sprinting quickly in the stretch to win in impressive fashion by 2 lengths and running an SP of 112. Prior to that he won a 9.5F allowance race in CA. He sat in 9th some 3 -4 lengths from them early before running on well to win easily by 3 lengths and an SP of 116. He was 2nd in a 9.5F allowance in NM before that. He settled 2nd that day and stayed there throughout to be beaten just over 3 lengths and running an SP of 105. He won a 9.5F Starter Allowance before that. He led all the way in that win, beating them comfortably by nearly 2 lengths. Prior to that was a 10F claiming win where he won easily by a length, sitting just off the pace and running an SP of 111. Some may question the class? However, he has been very impressive of late. Think he might be a sneaky chance in this but will need to progress to next level to do so. Some people will be kicking themselves that they didn’t claim him when they had the chance.
Chances in this race are many and very open.
8. King Tormax – Think with the speed engaged it sets up for a closer. And boy can he close. 5/1
12. Toy With The Field – To think this colt was in a claimer. Really impressive of late and think he can improve enough here to be competitive. Nice jockey engaged as well. 10/1
5. Comprehend – Another closer who is suited by the fast pace expected here. 6/1
Roughie: 2 – Master of Ribbons – Not that rough at 8/1 but in a competitive field nice odds.
