G1, Canada Turf: Ontario to host a 12f battle on the turf.

Ontario-CAN (ON) Saturday, October 3, 2020 — 3:00:00 PM EST | Race ID : 2357701
Canada Turf
Grade I / Group 1*CPU – Purse : $1,500,000
Restricted to 3 Year Olds and Older
12 Furlongs | ~2400 Meters | One Mile and a Half Firm Turf

This Saturday in Ontario they will be hosting the G1, Canada Turf.  This is a field that will be restricted to horses that are 3 years old and up that will travel a grueling distance of twelve furlongs.   There is a nice purse they will be battling for of $1,500,000 as they travel across the Firm Turf in the attempt to find the finish line first.  The odds makers have set their morning line for this eleven horse field and the post positions have been drawn.  Let us no take a preview of the horses that will go for this title in the G1, Canada Turf in Ontario, Canada.

1 SEAGROVE HILL KY 4M massatoga15 D Givins 14 5 50% $200,730 6.00 9/1

This four year old Bay Colt sired by Lemon Drop Kid had a nice run back in May of this year in California in a Listed Stakes, I Am Scheming Turf Special.  He lingered just of the leader in that race and then closed nicely at the wire to get a win by ¼ lengths.  After that race his next outing found him in New York when on 07/05/2020 he jumped up in Class to run in the G1, Man Of War Stakes.  He had a rough race that day even after a favorable post draw crossing the wire back in tenth place.  His most recent trip to the track then came on 08/23/2020 in New York in the G2, The Bemie Baruch.  Again he failed to compete in this nine furlong race and again showed up way back in eleventh.  He will need to show much improvement here in Ontario as he goes twelve furlongs for the first time with jockey, D Givins from Kentucky in the saddle to help guild him around this course.  This pair will be headed out at post time to the first gate representing the Universal Racing Club residency.

2 RED KORNSNAKE IRE 4M vettstars K Ledwith 14 5 71% $612,110 148.00 10/1

This four year old Bay Colt sired by Sea The Stars has been running very well this season for his owner.  He has a nice four race winning streak going and is coming off a G1 win in New York when he last ran on 08/08/2020 going 12 furlongs in the G1, Sword Swallower Stakes.  He stayed upfront close to the lead and at the third call took off to get up for a nice win by 1 ¼ lengths.  He will be headed out here on Saturday trying to find his fifth win in a row and back to back G1 wins.  The owner has made the call to Japan to find jockey, K Ledwith available to take the ride up top with his colt.  The jockey has a lot of horse to work with here and the horse has proven he can compete at this level of racing.  They will be headed out on Saturday at post time representing the Universal Racing Club residency.

3 TIME FOR A RING IRE 4G zkingab5 J Harzheim 16 7 69% $1,559,104 166.00 4/1

This four year old Bay Gelding sired by Galileo has been making his owner proud as he has hit the wire first in his last seven trips to the track.  This horse will be venturing into new territory come Saturday as he has never traveled twelve furlongs before.  His last trip to the track came on 08/15/2020 in Surrey when he went the distance of 10.5 furlongs in the G1, Judgemont International.  This late closer was ready that day and took control down the final stretch heading for home.  He got up for the win and his second G1 trip to the winners circle in a row.  He will go out to his post with jockey, J Harzheim from Tasmania in the saddle.  This jockey needs to let this horse run his race and save some energy for a closing run as he takes him across a distance of which he does not have prior experience.  This pair will be headed out to the track at post time representing the Empire State Racing residency.

4 DIRE WARNING ENG 6M gattaca S Tate 19 8 58% $1,625,657 8.00 4/1

This six year old Bay Horse will be the matriarch in this field of eleven.  He is a prior G1 winner and has much experience running at the Graded level.  In nineteen career starts he has found a trip to the winners circle eight times and will be looking to add to that total here in Ontario.  He knows how to travel the distance and thus this twelve furlongs should not be an issue for him.  Last year he won this race, the Canada Turf when he breezed home for the win.  He will be defending his title come Saturday.  His last trip to the track came on 08/15/2020 in Kentucky when he ran in a Listed Stakes, Cozy Delta Turf Stayer.  He made a closing effort which got him to the wire second in that race.  Last year here in the G1, Canada Turf he had jockey, S Tate from West Virginia in the saddle.  Jockey, S Tate gets the call again this year to ride this horse in what they hope to be a repeat performance.  This familiar pairing will be headed out of the paddock and to the turf representing the All-Stars Racing residency.

5 BRUSHING IRE 3M titleist H Harzheim 9 3 56% $356,305 96.75 32/1

The odds makers have not shown a lot of kindness for this three year old Bay Colt sired by Sea The Stars as they make him their longest choice in this field.  This may be a three year old, but in his last two races he has proven he can compete at the Graded level against his age group.  He will be stepping up for this trip to face older and more experienced horses.  He will need to prove he has the ability to handle this jump up and that he can run competitively in his first G1 race.  Back on 06/13/2020 He ran in Berkshire going 16f in the G3, The Queen’s Flower Pot.  He handily took control at the second call and never looked back as he got up by 6 lengths at the wire.  He then came back out for his most recent outing on 08/15/2020 in Surrey for the G2, The Great Volt.  In this race he went gate to wire to pick up another nice Graded win by 3 ¾ lengths against his nearest foe.  The call was made to find a familiar jockey, H Harzheim to take to the saddle again with this colt.  This familiar pairing won in Surrey the last time out and thus this jockey should know how to guild this horse around the turf.  They will be headed out to their gate draw representing the Empire State Racing residency.

6 ROCK THE WAR IRE 5G graywolf21 D Saylor 26 3 35% $118,993 2.00 21/1

Here we have a five year old Roan Gelding sired by Rock Of Gibraltar that will also be going off as one of the longer choices in this race.  He has shown his struggles this season and will need to show much improvement against this field of bruisers.  He went out on 07/12/2020 in the G2, The Dancing North Cup.  He tried to make up a little ground but just did not have the legs for a good performance that day coming in fifth and was over nine lengths back.  His owner brought this horse back out after a very short rest to run on 07/25/2020 in the G1, King Geoff and Queen Beth’s Emerald Stakes in Surrey.  The horse was just not ready to perform in that race and had a very stagnate trip.  The owner puts in the call to find a familiar jockey, D Saylor from Denmark ready to take to the irons and ride with this horse again.  This pairing will step onto the track on Saturday representing the Queensland Racecourse residency.

7 BKR RULERSHIP JPN 4G cancun3 R Hansen 8 5 75% $155,345 28.00 17/1

Back in January of this year this four year old Bay Gelding that is a scratch bred (RULERSHIP x BUCKLAND MANOR x TIME BANDIT) made a stable change in the Beerkeg master stables.  Perhaps having new stable mates has sparked a little interest in this horse as he has shown much improvement this season.  Question must be, has he improved enough to take on this crowd of competitors?  His last race was his first Graded attempt and it did not go so well for him when he went out on 08/16/2020 in the G2, The Polish Damsire here in Ontario.  He seemed to run a little sluggish that day as he went the distance of 12 furlongs and will need to show improvements over his last outing here in Canada.  He will get the services of jockey, R Hansen who is flying in from California to take the ride up top.  This is a familiar pairing that will be breaking from their gate representing the Drunken Jockeys Club residency.

8 FASTOLOGY LA 4G boudin1 A Jolly 15 11 87% $623,275 95.50 8/1

This four year old Bay Gelding sired by Astrology has not been off the boards since March of 2019.  In fifteen career starts he has only missed the boards twice and picked up eleven wins in the process which includes a G2 win is last time out.  He ran his last trip in Japan on 08/16/2020 in the G2, Shimko Classic when from nine lengths back at the third call he found a new gear to close big for a three length win at the wire and a 118 speed rating.  This horse really likes running with jockey, A Jolly from Louisiana and that is who will be in the saddle on Saturday to take this trip with this gelding.  This horse has the experience to go the distance and thus this should not be an issue for him here in Ontario.  This familiar pairing will be headed out in the post parade representing The Minnesota Testbarn Residency.

9 THANKUFORTHEVENOM IRE 4M sremel63 N Lawton 16 5 50% $194,273 23.00 7/1

This four year old Bay Colt is a Listed Stakes winner and is coming off two wins in a row for his owner.  He ran on 07/11/2020 in Delaware going 11.5 furlongs in the Hot Teacher Turf Stayer.  He closed nicely after the third call when asked to run and got up for the win by over four lengths.  He came back out in Vermont on 08/30/2020 to run 13f in a $24,300 NW4x Allowance.  Once again when asked to fire at the third call he popped and got up for another win by over four lengths.  This will be this horses first attempt to run against Graded company as he takes a big jump in Class for this race.  His owner has placed the call to New York to find jockey, N Lawton available to take to the saddle with his horse for this grueling trip.  If he can get this horse to show a good performance in this race and bring some of that speed with him as he jumps up in Class, he could prove to be a new competitor at this distance.  They will be heading out at post time to represent the Empire State Racing residency.

10 MYRRH CADET KY 5G cadet2 F Gossett 18 7 67% $507,171 11.06 9/2

This is a five year old Light Grey Gelding sired by Tiznow.  He is a recent G2 winner from when he ran on 06/06/2020 going 12f in New York in the G2, Crooklyn Handicap.  He and his jockey timed this race right when they got to the wire first to win by a neck.  This G2 win secured a spot for him to race next on 08/02/2020 in the Equinics G1, Mount Everest.  When asked to run at the third call he was unable to make up much ground and fell flat crossing the wire in sixth.  This is a nice looking horse and that last outing should not be discouraging to his owner or fans.  This horse is well bred and has proven he can go the distance and compete at this level.  I will point out that this will be this horses first crossing on a turf track as he has ran all prior races on the dirt.  The owner makes a call to California to find veteran jockey, F Gossett ready and eager to take to the saddle with this horse.  They will be headed out to their post draw representing the Empire State Racing residency.

11 RYANS GOLD AUS 4M shadeed99 J Selden 19 5 42% $940,738 136.00 6/1

This four year old Bay Colt is sired by Adelaide and is a nice G1 winner.  His owner sent him out on 06/27/2020 in New Jersey to run in the G1, United Countries Handicap.  The horse cruised the distance of 11f in this race and when asked to run at the third call, well he did just that.  His jockey got him to spark down the stretch to get up by over two lengths.  The owner then looked in the direction of Surrey for his horse’s next trip to the track.  On 08/15/2020 he went out in the G1, Judgemont International at a distance of 10.5 furlongs and failed to perform as he waltzed leisurely across the wire in tenth and was way back.  Perhaps that travel had something to do with it, or he was just having an off day.  His owner brings him back here to Ontario to give his horse another shot at a Graded win and has called upon jockey, J Selden from Brazil to fly in and take the ride with his colt.  This jockey will be trying to do his best to get this horse to rebound after that last disappointing trip in Surrey.  They will be headed out to the final post position in this race representing the All-Stars Racing residency.

Good luck to all horses and owners in this race!

Skippy’s Watch List

2-Red Kornsnake: Coming off four wins in a row with a G1 win his last trip to the turf.

3-Time For A Ring: Can he go the distance and make it eight wins in a row?

8-Fastology: Has not been off the boards in his last twelve races. Can he do it again?

Tarton’s Long Shot

5-Brushing: He is coming off back to back Graded wins, but he is a young 3 year old.  Can this 32/1 long shot in the field show he has what it takes to go up against the older horses in this field?  At the price and recent past performances I will find some spots for him on some of my exotic tickets when I head to the betting window.
