Auction Starts The New Year With A Bang

Auction Starts The New Year With A Bang

Auction 3455 – This week will probably be typical of the next month or so as people start taking a hard look at their stables.  With new 2 YO’s ready to arrive from the farms, space has to be freed up and those horses that are not good enough to retire or breed will find themselves in the auction.  While most will restock Computer Farm’s horse pool, there will be many bargains to be found for those that look for them.  Almost eight hundred horses went through the ring this week and Computer Farms took home almost one fourth of them and I am sure that some of them were decent enough.   Too bad there isn’t an easy way to search but then half the fun is in the looking  For anyone looking to make some money and it will only work for awhile, breed yourself a 2 YO and run it through the ring unraced.  It is amazing what an unraced 2 YO will bring.

Auction Observations:

Bad weather seems to follow me and once again I was grateful to Genebaum for donating his fireplace and even more grateful that my reserved table was right in front of it.  Although there were a lot of horses being sold, there didn’t seem to be as many people buying.  I guess most were still paying off those holiday debts.  I really wanted to catch up with Flstables but he was so busy selling off most of his stock that he had no time to visit.  It’s been a long time since I saw him in Brugge and he showed me the best time.  What a beautiful city!  I am sure that because of the fun I had there, it became my favorite town in Europe.  Another that was dispersing of his horses was Quinella.  Another person I met at Socalslew’s shindig at Del Mar one summer was also selling horses.  Whirlaway (Kara) and I had a grand time with many of the Sim members the weekend of the Pacific Classic, including putting a spoon on our noses at Denny’s one morning for prizes.  Oh to be young again!  Whoswho was busy as was Harpie who came by with Warpig.  Gotta love that name – I keep looking for Spiderpig, spiderpig – doing whatever spiderpig’s do.  Ireland and Minnesota under various stable names were selling and Coldeye, Slowhand and Heartz all stopped by for a minute.  The Super’s were also selling – probably to make room for their extensive breeding program and the Bear clan was wheeling and dealing way to fast for this old head to keep up with.  Scotsgrey was in a hurry but I had to tell him what a lovely horse he has and Shelmo (what’s happened to Marky?) and Gonzo were busy.  Lionhound was looking to fill up his stable and 2somebozo along with Im3xwiser brought over some hot chocolate.  Mravenger was sitting in the corner under the American flag, being his usual crusty old self but he is such a treat you just gotta love him no matter how hard he tries to appear mean and unlikable.  Texasace only had Random Thief back in the auction, and I guess he’ll be back next week since he didn’t sell.  I think the other one was finally fit enough from all the traveling back and forth to run.  No wonder he is such a top trainer – he thinks outside the box!  I mean who else would use traveling to and from the auction to get their horse ready to run…..  Ok, enough of the drivel –

The Millionaires;

Seven horses sold for a million dollars or more this week.  I don’t think any were stable transfers although one went from the group Super to one of the Super members – if that counts.  Here’s a look at the top five.

The top selling horse of the week was Sahara Avenue, #84195.  Sold by Sdmf3, the 5 YO big bay horse has won six of 28 starts but can’t seem to make the jump from allowance to stakes.  He can hit three digit numbers but his best stakes placing was a fourth last June.  Bunnyluv thinks they can turn that around and placed the final bid of $4 million.

My dear friend Flstables seems to be having a dispersal sale and I am hoping he is not leaving us forever.  He consigned Segolene, #57016, from his Sunairfarm and the lovely dark bay 3YO filly brought $2.5 million from Pointblank.  By Awesome Again out of an AP Indy mare she might have been a steal for that price.  She’s a maiden but after running fast closing seconds in her first two races she broke down in her third start.  With three months off she came back on an off track and ran credibly.  She’s never run a mile, never run on grass and with only four starts may be one to watch.

Devil Wears Prado, #124508, sold more or less in house.  The 4YO roan colt by El Prado went from Super6 to Texasace06.  Cleverly named, he has only won one race but is 6/14 in the money.  It’s also been a year since this he has won but I doubt that these guys care.

We go from the devil to Believe In Faith, #122652 who fetched $1.5 million from Nudiebar22 who with that name, just might need it  The 4 YO chestnut colt by Redoubt’s Choice was making his second appearance in the auction ring.  The five time winner was sent through last August after a dismal performance in a Grade I.  He collected a check in every start for seller Zewango and Nudiebar hopes that he will continue to do so.

Killer Clown, #91592, rounds out the top five.  She is an unraced 3 YO bay filly by Pleasant Tap out of a Cryptoclearance mare.  Korn was the consignor of this nice looking filly and Kaule signed the ticket to take her home.

Also bringing top dollar prices were #132631, Empire Woman who sold for $1,200,008 and went from Sherwood to Grimmie and #98688 Wonderboy Erase who went from Gipper7 to Bad for $1 million even.

The Stc Auction

The Stc trainers were not very active this week buying only 11 horses.  They spent a total of $9,286.00 for their purchases for an average selling price of $221.10.  Paying the most was Stcfabman.  He paid $2,502 for Remember November, a 4 YO colt and followed that up with a $2,003 purchase in BT’s New Recruit, another 4 YO.  Stcsargent was the leading buyer among the Stc trainers, taking three for a total of $502.00.

Well, that’s it for this week.  Good Luck with all your auction purchases.
