A big card is scheduled this weekend in California with one of the headlining races being the G1, The United Oaks. This race is a 10 furlong race for 3 year old fillies only. This test of stamina and speed will bring this full field of fourteen horses to the track to grind their way across a Firm Turf track this coming Saturday afternoon in the Eureka State of California. There are two horses in this race that are prior G1 winners, while the rest of the field will be attempting to make their first trip to the winners circle in a G1 event. The morning line odds have been made by the odds makers for this race and it looks like a pretty tight field to handicap. The random post positions are drawn and last minute preparations are now being make by the owners and jockeys. Let us now take a little preview of the horses running in the G1, The United Oaks this coming Saturday.
Post Position: 1
Horse/Odds: Skaoi 10/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (REDOUTE’S CHOICE x BERNARDINI x SADLER’S WELLS)
Owner: dkyoung3
Jockey: P Haynes
Breaking from the first gate will be this Bay Filly who gathered up a nice G1, win in her last trip to the track when she ran in Deauville in the G1, The French Diana on 05/31/2020. She came out of gate seven in that race and ran gate to wire traveling a distance of 10.5 furlongs and had career high 106 speed rating that day. She will headed out in this race here in California to attempt to claim another G1 win and her third win in a row. She will have the services of jockey, P Haynes from New Jersey in the saddle to take this trip with her. She has the goods to compete well in this race if she can handle the long trip coming in for this race from France. This team will be headed out at post time to represent the Universal Racing Club.
Post Position: 2
Horse/Odds: Savoury Shapes 13/1
Sire: Camelot
Owner: corzak
Jockey: J Piotrowski
This Bay Filly is a daughter by Camelot and is the first foal out of the G1 winning mare Savoury. This filly has never won a stakes race, but has been in the money in a couple of Graded outings. Her last trip to the track came on 06/06/2020 in Surrey when she ran going 12 furlongs in the G1, Oaks de English where she showed up a disappointing sixth in that race. She is coming back to the track on Saturday off a short rest which was noted by the odds makers for this race. She has a top speed rating of 97 which came in her last outing in Surrey. The owner makes the call to find jockey, J Piotrowski from Pennsylvania ready to take to the saddle and ride with his filly. This short rest is concerning and the jockey will be looking to find a little more fire in the legs of this young horse when they head out at post time to represent the Queensland Racecourse residency.
Post Position: 3
Horse/Odds: Zoffwitan 13/1
Sire: Zoffany
Owner: megaequinics
Jockey: Z Ayya
In seven career starts this Brown Filly has found her way to the boards five times of which four of them were trips to the winners circle. Her last outing came on 05/16/2020 in Oklahoma when she ran in the G2, Celine Stakes. She jumped out of gate quickly and found her way to the front and went gate to wire in this 8.5 furlong run to hit the wire first by two lengths. This will be the first time for this horse to travel this grueling 10 furlong distance on Saturday and her first run in a G1 race. This front runner will have to prove she has the stamina to last when she gets jockey, Z Ayya from New York back in the saddle to take this trip with her. This familiar pairing will be headed out at post time to represent the Equinics 10 residency.
Post Position: 4
Horse/Odds: Flying Lawman 36/1
Sire: Lawman
Owner: beerkeg2
Jockey: R Hansen
This Bay Filly as of late has had her struggles and the odds makers quickly took note of this and made her the longest choice in their morning line at 36/1 odds. In her best outings she likes to run up front. She has been struggling in her speed ratings and thus why she has not found a trip to the winners circle in over a year. Her last outing was on 05/23/2020 in Deauville when she traveled 8 furlongs in the G2, The Sandy Ring. She showed up in eighth at the wire and was way back by over sixteen lengths. The owner is going to jump her up in distance for this race for the first time to see if she can get a new found spark of interest at this distance. Jockey, R Hansen who is a local jockey here in California will get the call to take to the saddle with this filly. He will need to bring his bag of tricks and bring out the best in this horse to keep her competitive when they head out to their post representing the Drunken Jockeys Club residency.
Post Position: 5
Horse/Odds: Coagulate Lad 16/1
Sire: Lilbourne Lad
Owner: corza8
Jockey: C Orza
This Bay Filly had a nice last outing on 05/17/2020 when she traveled 12 furlongs in Japan when she ran second in the G1, Japanese Oaks. She traveled the distance in second all the way and that was where she ended at the wire. She is a prior G3 badge earner when last October she got up for the win in Germany in the G3, The Winter Gin Special when she ran her career high speed rating of 96. She will get the services of jockey, C Orza from New York who will be flying in from across country to take to the irons with this filly. They will be headed out in the post parade representing the Queensland Racecourse.
Post Position: 6
Horse/Odds: Bo Talks 10/1
Sire: Tapit
Owner: bertaal2
Jockey: R Heenan
This Roan Filly and daughter of Tapit is out of HOF winning mare Botwisted. This G1 winning filly headed out to the track on 05/23/2020 in Germany and traveled 11 furlongs in the G1, The Diana Grand Prix and handily picked up a big win, when she took control at the third call and went on to cross the wire first by three lengths. She ran a 102 speed rating that day which is a career high for her. This filly will be going out to try and grab her third win in a row this Saturday against a tough crowd. She likes to close late and I am sure jockey, R Heenan from Ontario will try to place this horse in the right spot when it is time for her to fire and weave toward the front. They will come out of the paddock Saturday to represent the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 7
Horse/Odds: Bont Tickle 15/1
Sire: Society’s Chairman
Owner: maseratikerry
Jockey: M Kelly
This Bay Filly has never traveled at the 10 furlong mark or longer before, but she does appear she can handle the distance, but the question will be if she can handle this big jump in Class to compete in her first ever appearance at the Graded level? She certainly has a nice career going as she has had nine starts and has never missed hitting the boards. She might be a good play at 15/1 odds if she can find a little extra in her legs and if she can gracefully make the move up in Class. Her last outing came on 06/07/2020 in Virginia going 8.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Flambeau Turf Filly Route. She closed nicely to hit the boards second with a 94 speed rating. The owner has placed the call to jockey, M Kelly from Delaware to come in and take to the saddle up top of his filly for this race. There are concerns about coming in off a short rest for this race as well. She has some things to prove here for sure which is reflected in the morning line odds. She will be headed out at post time to the cheers of the crowd as she makes way to her post position.
Post Position: 8
Horse/Odds: Special Muzzle 14/1
Sire: White Muzzle
Owner: chloedawg
Jockey: M Clooch
This Bay Filly has done well thus far in her career of eight starts as she hit the boards in all but one start which was in her Maiden début on the dirt. A very forgivable miss in that race which brings little concern and was then transitioned over to the turf for all her future outings. She last ran here in California on 04/25/2020 going 8.5 furlongs in a sponsored race by NWRC and Pirate Racing, the G1, The California Gold. She found herself in sixth at the third call and just 1 ½ lengths off the lead. She made a closing effort to get up for third when she hit the wire in her first ever Stakes run. The owner has made the call to jockey, M Clooch from Nebraska to come in and take the mount up top and bring his horse around this long turf track. She does lack in some experience compared to some other entries in the field, but she has proven she knows how to step it up in the crowd she faces thus far in her career. She likes closing late after the third call and that is what I would expect to happen here in the United Oaks. She will head out at post time representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 9
Horse/Odds: Hannahssohn 5/1
Sire: Mendelssohn
Owner: james22
Jockey: E Sharp
This nice looking Bay Filly who is out of the mare, American Hannah is the second of her three foals. She has produced much better as a mare than she did while on the track. This filly has had a grueling three years with sixteen starts of which she has hit the boards in thirteen of those races. She last ran in Sweden on 05/23/2020 in a Listed Stakes, Euro Road to Fame IV. She hit the wire in second that day and was two lengths back. This filly does have the desire to compete and she has come close many times against Graded company. She is still searching for the elusive Graded trip to the winners circle. Will Saturday be her day to find it when she goes off as the co-favorite in this race? She will get the services of veteran jockey, E Sharp from Ohio to come in and take to the saddle up top to try and lead her to another trip to the boards. They will be making their way out in the post parade to the sounds of a very excited crowd.
Post Position: 10
Horse/Odds: My Zero Hops 7/1
Sire: Mineshaft
Owner: lgbost2yos
Jockey: J Caves
This Bay Filly is a former G3 winner from last November when she closed up shop in Arizona in the G3, Mistaken Soda Identity Stakes on the dirt going a distance of 8.5 furlongs. She has some nice experience on the turf surface as well of which she showed us in Vermont on 05/03/2020. She ran going 10 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Shin Tootsie Filly Route where she took control at the third call and got up for the win by three lengths. This filly has now shown that she can go the distance, but can she go the distance and be there competing coming for home in this race? I say she has a fair chance here and the odds makers agree in their morning line. The call is made to jockey, J Caves from Kentucky to fly to take the mount up top with this filly. She likes running just off the lead or mid pack in her best outings and I would expect to see the same here in this race if her jockey can find the right lane and holes to place her. This is a very familiar jockey for this filly and thus the jockey should know what to do when they head out at post time for the call of this race.
Post Position: 11
Horse/Odds: All Star Quality 5/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (FRANKEL (GB) x MR. PROSPECTOR x A.P. INDY)
Owner: mightyforego9
Jockey: J Sands
This Bay Filly will go off in the morning line as the co-favorite at 5/1 and I can see why she may have gotten a good look from the odds makers. She has eight career starts to her credit and has hit the boards in seven of those starts never finishing worse than fourth. She had a nice run in her last trip to the track on 05/09/2020 in Paris when she traveled 10 furlongs in the G1, The Saint Larry. She had a nice effort in that race which was her first Graded attempt. She crossed the wire in second with a nice run and a 101 speed rating. Jockey, J Sands from Wyoming will come in to pick up this horse in their first pairing together. This horse does look ready to go in this race provided she gracefully makes the trip to California coming in from Paris. She is well bred and this jockey should have a lot of horse to work with in this race if he can get her just off the lead where she likes to run and get her to fire at the third call. They will be headed out at post time to represent the All-Stars Racing residency.
Post Position: 12
Horse/Odds: Sea Gazing 16/1
Sire: Sebring
Owner: scout3
Jockey: F Duffy
This Bay Filly stumbled in her first Graded attempt when she ran last on 05/24/2020 in New York in the G3, The Wynn Point. The distance was 9 furlongs and she did make a closing effort to close the gap a little after the third call, but it appears she ran out of turf in that race. Thus this added furlong may be to her liking. She is a prior stakes winner and she will get the run with jockey, F Duffy up top with her who is a seasoned jockey from New Mexico. Perhaps a new face with a jockey change is just what she needs. Perhaps he can rejuvenate the spark to give better effort when they head out to their post representing the Racing HQ residency.
Post Position: 13
Horse/Odds: Menacing Mare 7/1
Sire: Mendelssohn
Owner: nhmt6447
Jockey: M Staples
Jockey, M Staples who is a local jockey here in California rode this 7/1 choice Bay Filly in her last outing here in California on 05/31/2020 in the G2, Full Moon Handicap. They were met with disappointment when this filly fell off her run in second place for most of the race to cross the wire in sixth. This jockey and filly pairing are very familiar with one another and they are going out to redeem themselves after that last trip to the track together. This filly is a former G3 winner from back in September of last year when she took charge in Kentucky in the G3, The JPMC Jessamine Stakes. She tends to like running just off the lead in her best performances and I am sure that is where her jockey will try and place her for this race if they can get a clean break out of the gate from this outside post. They will be headed out together to their post draw to the sounds of an excited crowd.
Post Position: 14
Horse/Odds: Song Without Words 9/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (MENDELSSOHN x SUMMER SQUALL x NUREYEV )
Owner: rwhisper
Jockey: T Price
This Bay filly has eight career starts and has found herself hitting the boards in seven of those starts which included five trips to the winners circle. She is going off at the 9/1 choice in this field on Saturday and I am sure this is due to the odds makers taking note that she has never ran at this distance in any prior starts. She has been running well in route races but they have never exceeded 8.5 furlongs. She is taking a jump in Class and distance and with a unfamiliar jockey. She last hit the track here in California on 05/03/2020 in the G3, The Great Woman of which she got into position at the third call in second place and that is where she remained when she crossed the wire. She posted a career high 100 speed rating that day to hit the triple digits for the first time. Jockey, T Price from Minnesota is flying in to sunny California to take the mount up top of this filly for her first attempt in a G1 race and at a distance of 10 furlongs of which she will need to prove herself. This nice looking filly will be headed out to her far outside post draw to represent the Hoosier Racing residency.
Good luck to all owners and horses!
Skippy’s Watch List
1-Skaoi: Coming off a G1 win and has the best speed rating in the field. She should be competitive.
6-Bo Talks: Coming off a G1 win and she can go the distance. She should be fighting for this one.
11-All Star Quality: This filly has been begging for a big win. Can she do it?
Tarton’s Long Shot
7-Bont Tickle: This horse has yet to miss the boards in eight starts. She is coming into this race on a short rest, which does concern me. But at this price and with her record I am going to place her on some of my exotic tickets at the window. I may even throw a win ticket on this one for good measure.
