The Ugly Nurse Pageant

Leave it to Oklahoma to name a Stakes race ‘The Nurse Ugly Special.’  Ha ha ha.  Let me just say that the trainers of the 2yo fillies in this race don’t think that about their own entry, even though they may be thinking that about their competition.  Well, ‘The Nurse Ugly Special’ hosts a field of 2yo fillies going 7 furlongs on the turf for a $60,000 purse.  Read on to find out who is the ‘Least Ugly’ of the bunch.

(PP1 – 19/1) Magpie Cecil, of the Mailace7 stable, was given opening odds of 19/1.  How?!?  Well, can you say first time starters??  This Acceptable X Holme On Top X Icy Adonis filly is the obvious horse to beat in this race in my opinion.  No other filly in this race has fired in the 70’s on the turf, and only Go FL Gators has run over 6 furlongs up to this point.  So, I am making the Magpie my choice in this one.  I won’t even mention her dirt races since they are a big 20 SP difference from her turf races.  Magpie Cecil won her debut race going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf firing a 68 and winning by 2 ½ lengths.  She won her last time out on the turf going 6 furlongs and fired a 76 in that effort.  I know, I know, she has some claiming races in her past, but her win in her last out was in an open allowance field of seven runners.  Look for Mailace7 to send her to the front in this once since that is where she has run the best.

(PP2 – 10/1) Intravenous Demilo, of the Rickpitino stable, has hit the board in 3 of her 4 races and has been steadily improving each time out.  After winning her $20,000 maiden claiming race, her trainer at the time, Gdog, placed this Aptitude X Unbridled’s Song X Darshaan(ENG) filly in a $5,000 claiming race.  She won that turf race by 2 ¼ lengths, but the Rickpitino stable picked up her claim tag.  In her next race, her new trainer stepped her up to Stakes Company where she fared decently finishing up 3rd in a six horse field and fired a 61 SP #, her career best.  She will in need to continue that improvement today to hit the board I think.  Nonetheless, I think the Rickpitino stable made a good claim if they are patient with Intravenous Demilo’s development.

(PP3 – 7/1) Ferocious Roar, of the Goody3 stable, has yet to visit Stakes Company in her short 4 race career.  This Roar X Nureyev X Smokester filly has hit the board in 3 of 4 races and has run well in large MSW fields in the past.  The thing that really stands out in her past performances is her level of consistency.  While that can be a good thing at times, it concerns me here because there is no showing of improvement.  This isn’t her first trip on the grass.  In fact, she has never been on the dirt.  This is a longer race than she has ever tried before.  The question for the Goody3 stable is whether Ferocious Roar can handle the step up in company.  I think that if she fires like she did in her 2nd race, where she finished 2nd while firing a 67 SP # in a California MSW going six furlongs, then she could hit the board in this one.  She will have to improve I think to win it, though.

(PP4 – 3/1) Lost In The Fogg, of the Kid6 stable, holds the claim to my favorite horse name in the race.  This Sky Classic X Trempolino X Cee’s Tizzy filly makes her debut in this one.  Having never run a race in MSW Company really concerns me.  She could run green or she could fire big.  It’s a real crap shoot predicting what a first time starter will do in their debut, especially a 2 year old.  The Kid6 stable’s win percentage is only 8.7% out of 379 races, so I am very hesitant to be optimistic on Lost In The Fogg’s chances in this one.  If she doesn’t fire big like Kid6 hopes she will, I think a quick step down into MSW Company to give her time to develop is warranted.

(PP5 – 8/5) Go FL Gators, of the Oncloud9 stable, is the morning line favorite in the race.  This Lemon Drop Kid X Affirmed X Gulch filly has hit the board in all 4 of her career races.  The bad thing is that they are all on the dirt.  Today she makes her turf debut.  The good thing about Go FL Gators is that she has been a consistent 70-75 SP # filly.  Again, those races were on the dirt.  As we all know, surface can have a huge impact on a horse’s performance.  After two heartbreaking second place finished, Go FL Gators won by a nose in her third try at 6 furlongs in MSW Company.  In her last out, this filly made her Stakes debut, while stretching out to 7 ½ furlongs.  She finished up 3rd in a 4 horse field.  I think that if she can handle the turf as well as she has handled the dirt, the Oncloud9 stable will have a horse in the money since she is the only entry in the race that has been 7 furlongs or longer.

(PP6 – 8/5) Psyche, of the Kjracing stable, is another first time starter.  This Belong To Me X Seattle Slew X Guillaume Tell filly must have something that the morning line odds makers like since she is the co-morning line favorite.  The Kjracing stable has a winning percentage of 13% out of 389 races.  Better than the Kid6 stable, but again, I am hesitant to get too excited over a first time starter, much less one making their debut in Stakes Company.
