Top Buyers Too Busy Preparing For the BB – Prices Tumble!

Auction 3378 – The number of horses selling for seven figures was way down this week with the sale topper bringing almost four million dollars less than the horse last week.  In fact, only five horses total, went for a million or more.  When the big guns don’t show up the prices go way down.  Jockeymax sold the two top horses in the sale and both were by Saint Liam and both were bought by Keely.   Does that mean that Jockeymax is giving up on Saint Liam as a sire?  I tried to catch up to him to ask but he was out the door with his money in hand, yelling over his shoulder,  about a plane to catch.  It’s for sure that Keely still likes him – Saint Liam not Jockeymax – well I’m sure she likes him too, just not the same as Wes. Giant’s Causeway was also well represented with two of his progeny bringing over a million dollars.  Most of the other numbers stayed about the same as last week with The Computer stable taking home about one third of the horses offered for sale.  The holding corral at their farm must be overflowing!  At this rate Mike will never have to replenish the horse pool again.

Auction Observations:

This past week was hectic around my home in Arizona so it was a great relief to leave pasture planting, memorial services and parental demands behind for a nice morning under my favorite tree at the sale barn.  As usual my table was a busy place and many old friends dropped by as well as many new ones. One of the first to stop by was Toplight who I hadn’t seen in forever.  As well as being one of the top trainers in the Sim he is also one of the very nicest of people.  Whippingboy, Waywardlad and Justcheat came by to tout me on a horse or two running later in the day as did Rubies who always has a tip or two.  Runforfree was both buying and selling and seemed to be doing well.  Maguire was laughing out loud in the corner with both Hat and Name Less looking on while Bums, Freewill and Driftaway wandered aimlessly about the grounds.  Ts sat for awhile and we had to reminisce about his days of being a bar owner in Michigan.  Many of the regulars were at the sale, five or six of the Bear Clan and of course Naracing, Stoners and Taffy.  Even Mred came by and talked up a storm.  There were many others but time is limited and so is space.  So let’s get to the skinny on the millionaire horses.

The Millionaires

Super Saint #126035 was a pretty dark gray 3 YO filly by Saint Liam out of a Nureyev mare and was consigned by Jockeymax2.  She has won five of her 15 starts and has finished in the money in nine of her races. She hasn’t seen the winner’s circle in over three months but looked relatively sound, she scoped well and that was enough for 1rh (Keely) to plunk down $$1,538,635.00 to take her home.

Jockeymax3 also consigned a stout gray colt by Saint Liam out of a Danehill mare named Saint’s Hill # 103158.  He has been in the money in 10 of his 18 starts and won three of them.  Keely, buying under the Moonkissed stable, shelled out $1,298,405 for this useful looking horse who has won two of his last eight

Big Bad Bird # 117582, a 4YO dark bay colt was led into the ring by Poowillck.  By Giant’s Causeway out of a Storm Bird mare he has only won two races from 24 starts and hasn’t done that in over a year.  Robinhood was willing to shell out $1,050,001.00 on his breeding alone or maybe for the $25,000 starter tag he brings with him.

The oldest horse in this elite group was Lovejoy Manor # 105857.  The big, tall, 5 YO copper chestnut horse is by Lahib and out of a Kalaglow mare.  He has won 16 of his 29 races and seven this year, which is almost more than all the rest of this group combined.  However, when he ran out his $2,500 starter tag, he was immediately consigned to the auction by Bond72 and Wonderboy1 was willing to pay $1,015,303.00 for the horse.  I doubt he will win back his purchase price but at least he’s a winner.

Taffy took some time off from her wedding plans and paid $1,000,001.00 for Ohnohedidn’t # 82547, a bright chestnut colt by Giant’s Causeway out of a Pulpit mare, possibly as a wedding present for her soon to be husband.  He is still a maiden – the colt for sure, I don’t know about the husband, but he has only started three times and hopefully they could be considered learning experiences.   It’s a dollar to donuts that this 3 YO guy will be seen on a turf course near you for his new connections.  Ohnohedidn’t was consigned by Getnasty.

Well, that’s the Auction 3378 doings for this week.  Good luck with all your new purchases.
