Creepshow (IRE) Upsets In Coffeefields

As expected, the track for the running of the three million dollar Coffeefields Cup was not ideal possibly for many of the horses entered in the race. By post time this morning the track was listed as good. The crowd was growing anxious waiting for the big race. Despite the track conditions the full field of fourteen paraded out to the starting gate, all loading into the gates professionally. Then the tense moments began until the gates would clang open and the great race would be run.

Breaking out of the gate first was Balerion, owned by khalasar, who was leading by a length over lordpye2 trained S R Awareness (IRE). A good three and three-fourth lengths back in third was Warwick (IRE), owned by cuprunners. Along in fourth and fifth were Western Sculpture and F Speed (ENG), trained by dorrin and jsimpson respectively. Trailing the field early on, thirteen lengths off the lead was elite6 owned Astronomer’s Quest (IRE).

Then Balerion lengthened his lead over S R Awareness (IRE) to a total of two lengths. These two horses were in a speed duel, leaving the rest of the field in their dust with third place runner Warwick (IRE) now eight and a half lengths off the pace of leader Balerion. Western Sculpture held on for fourth with pompeya owned moving up into fifth and with F Speed already starting to fade back. Pre race favorite, freeky trained Otto Oh No was making a move now and was moving up into ninth passing up Freeze (NZ), owned by aggots, whom was nervous about the effects of the off track might have on his colt. Still trailing the pack by twenty-one lengths now was Astronomer’s Quest (IRE).

Into the final turn it was Balerion who seemed to be running away with it now, five and a half lengths in front of S R Awareness (IRE). But the rest of the field was beginning to gain on them now. Lenny28 owned Creepshow (IRE) was making a run from mid-pack and was now nipping at their heels in third, continuing to move ever closer. Western Sculpture still hung onto fourth but seemed to be tiring. Making a big move from the back of the field was Rainband (AUS), trained by wulf. K’s Ikkasion had dropped back into sixth now with favorite Otto Oh No making his way up into seventh, slowly gaining on the field. Still in eighth and yet to make a move was click owned Swingshift Sal. Warwick (IRE) was fading fast now and was back in ninth and still dropping fast. Freeze (NZ) was possibly confirming his owners worst fears of the off track and seemed to be struggling with the surface in tenth. F Speed (ENG) had dropped to eleventh with Blazing Lights. trained by kjracing still holding in twelfth. X Commandments (IRE), trained by randwick1 was beginning to drop back and was now in thirteenth. And trailing the field as they came for home was still Astronomer’s Quest (IRE).

Balerion and S R Awareness (IRE) battled on with both horses on their last leg, struggling to hold off the challenging Creepshow (IRE) and rocketing Rainband (AUS). At last the twelve furlong marathon was in its final strides and it was Creepshow (IRE) to defeat Balerion in the final furlongs of the race to take the win with Balerioin in second just holding off Rainband (AUS) who finished third.
