The Inaugural World Cup Juvenile Colt Turf Mile was a close and exciting race in the end. It was also a bit of a surprise as 9/1 shot MANATEE BAD BOY held off everyone down the stretch and picked up the first place points for the NASA team. In fact all three teams won points in the race with REACH THE PEAK gathered second place points for the Euros and BUCK’S PARTY got the third place points for the FENZA team.
The REFUSE TO BEND colt out of Broodmare BALLOT BOX won the first Graded race that he had entered and the first time at a mile as well. Trainer BRStable who is a rare lone stable owner in this time of huge conglomerates has to have a smile that just won’t quit this week. It was the fourth win along with two seconds in six races and he has now won two Stakes outings. The win brought his overall winnings up to over $415k and moved him into the number one ranking for both the classic and long distance categories. It is assumed that his next race will be at the Breeders Bowl in five weeks.BUCK’S PARTY jumped out to the early lead and looked like a winner late in the race with a two plus length lead at the top of the stretch. Our winner took the lead half way down the stretch and then held off an extremely quick and hard charging REACH THE PEAK who needed just a little more real estate or a little earlier push to come from more than 12 lengths back to just miss at the wire. He may be even better if stretched out a bit.
Overall, the first World Cup race was hugely successful with a huge and vociferous crowd and drawing a great field. I hate that we have to wait two years until the next one. By then, MANATEE BAD BOY may have added to his legacy.
Good luck to all runners!
