A Full House Stops By for Jay’s Fanfare
Fast Dirt
$60,000
Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up
Stakes History: first running
Just like the restrooms (on a Saturday night) at a busy local tavern, the atmosphere around the Carolina Downs stalls will be of eager anticipation (for the running of the first annual ) JAY’s FANFARE Special. A full house of entries brings smiles to a group of track managers that sometimes struggle to schedule stakes events that generate this much interest at Carolina Downs.
As for the 2005 Field running in the JAY’S FANFARE Special:
PP1 | DEPUTY PAUNCHI | Owner-irehold | Jockey-A Brothers | Odds-9/1 |
(Deputy Minister x Secreatariat)
6 years old mare- Ran flat and never a factor in last outing- ownership will toss out that performance and hope for one similar to the kind that produced five wins in six starts. She will utilize her inside post position to place herself in a good stalking trip.
PP2 | MISS WOODY | Owner-quitter | Jockey-N Stalker | Odds-10/1 |
(Woodman x El Gran Senor)
Nice four years old filly that I wish was in my stable. She broke poorly in last outing and never got close to the front. Best running style for her is to be on or close to the pace. Her career record indicates the talent to run in this event.
PP3 | CAP THE DEPUTY | Owner-nogriftn | Jockey-K Naber | Odds-5/1 |
(Deputy Minister x Capote)
Some could considered a “soft” morning line favorite at 5-to 1. A veteran of 38 races and has won more than seven hundred thousand dollars, she ran big in her last outing. This performance indicates that she still has something in her tank for a few more races. She likes to rally from further back, so a quick pace would suit her fine. Much of her recent competition has occurred in graded events, so like in her last outing, she may prove too much for this level of runners. Note the added advantage of having leading jockey on her back for this event.
PP4 | CAMP(IRE) | Owner-polandfarm | Jockey-D Esperado | Odds-8/1 |
(Barathea(IRE) x Affirmed)
Won the Lawn Wrangler(GB) Memorial the LTO, and ships in with much more confidence than long time. Her performance in that race dispelled some rumors and concerns that her best days were behind her, and she that she had not fully recovered from a disastrous race on week 2391- that led to a long layoff. Owners must feel that she is back to her old self-considering they are shipping her in from
PP5 | WALTHER WAR(GB) | Owner-euroalien | Jockey-G Disher | Odds-9/1 |
(Warning x Alydar)
Nine years old, over half a million in earnings, and still competing in stakes events-and, I am hoping to make it to bathroom on time when I am sixty. Actually, she went 183 weeks without racing, and has yet reached her previous performance level. She will be returning to a stakes event, after a couple of tries in allowance competition. I admire her spunk, but doubt if she will crack into the money column in this event.
PP6 | HOPING THIS WORKS | Owner-penamacor2 | Jockey-S | Odds-10/1 |
(Palace Music x Turkoman)
At four years of age, could be considered a youngster in this group of runners. She appears to be a closer that comes up short in her efforts.
PP7 | CAKEMONSTER | Owner-bm3 | Jockey-J Grimm | Odds-17/1 |
(Dynaformer x Mr. Prospector)
She has never won at over a mile, so distance is questionable. She could be one of the early pace setters in this event, but can she stay the distance?
PP8 | PLEASECALLHOME | Owner-sk50 | Jockey-J Reed | Odds-10/1 |
(West by West x Midyan)
She hopes to get back into the win column and break a three race losing streak. Ranked #132 in the Fillies/Mares Dirt Classic Division, she has missed being in the money by a few strides in her recent outings.
PP9 | TEA COZY | Owner-blitzers | Jockey-I Spriggs | Odds-7/1 |
(Cozzene x Theatrical)
Another “youngster” at four years of age, TEA COZY will be hard pressed to stay on or near the lead for the full nine furlongs. Since moving to stakes competition, she has shown signs of tiring under pressure in the stretch.
PP10 | WHAT ABOUT NICK | Owner-blitzers | Jockey-I Spriggs | Odds-7/1 |
(Saint Ballado x Easy Goer)
Twenty eight of 44 trips in the money- she ships in from
PP11 | SEASCAPE | Owner-rrr | Jockey-T Mafit | Odds-7/1 |
(
A five year old with only twenty three starts, she won the Slew Rush Memorial in her last race. Starting on the outside, SEASCAPE may elect to drop back and save ground in this event. She has displayed a strong kick in some of her efforts.
PP12 | STARLIGHT | Owner-king | Jockey-E | Odds-16/1 |
(Grand Slam x E. K Spatz)
She will need to bounce back to the form of several races back to be a contender in this full field. Late bid in the stretch in last outing was impressive and frustrating (1/4 length loss).
PP13 | FOOLISH FAIR(IRE) | Owner-kythunder | Jockey-N Romo | Odds-16/1 |
(
She is winless 2005, and unlikely that string will be broken on Saturday. It appears that she may be dropping off to a lower performance level- age probably the factor.
PP14 | MY ANGEL DEB | Owner-bronco4 | Jockey-W Baker | Odds-13/1 |
(Pulpit x Robyn Dancer)
She ran a nice race two weeks back on a “good” track. Return may be a bit too soon –as her best performance came with more rest. Expect her to pressure the others for the lead, and post position does not do her any favors in that department.
This race has a field of runners that will be difficult to handicap. Several of the runners have had very good success in the future, and are capable of finding themselves in contention in this race. Pace, ground saving moves, and clean trips will play into determining the winner. My selections are:
