Flying into West Virginia today where a nice field of fillies and mares are gearing up for the Bubblegum Rock Dirt Mare this weekend going 10 furlongs on what should be a Fast Dirt track. Several prior Graded Stakes winners and Listed Stakes winners will be running in this eight horse field. It should be a nice crisp and sunny fall day in West Virginia this time of year for this outing. I have taken my walk around the barns this morning and stopped to chat with some of the trainers and owners. The morning line odds and post positions have been listed. So let’s go take a preview of this nice field of fillies and mares and see how they stack up in the morning line.
Horse/Odds Owner Jockey
1. Ima Creep 6/1 bigiron K Y Baker
This Listed Stakes winning mare sired by Orb has not raced in stakes company since back in June of this year but has been running some decent times in her recent Allowance outings. She came in 3rd on 09/27/2018 in a 10 furlong, $45,000 Allowance where she found herself 2 ¼ lengths back at the wire. She may need to step it up a little in this crowd to find the wire first.
2. Competitive Swag 9/2 blazsadcfo S Kelly
She last ran on 09/28/2018 in the Southern Casino Dirt Mare Route going 10.5 furlongs. She found herself 3rd and was 7 lengths back at the wire. This filly sired by Competitive Edge likes to make her charge late, so look for her to make a move down the stretch headed for the wire. She has show past speeds in the past to compete here today. She needs to up her game and find that mojo again to find the boards.
3. Sea Swell 6/1 shaitan W Bowman
This filly sired by Sea The Moon has found herself on a Hot Steak winning her last 3 outings. Her last trip to the track was on 09/30/2018 in the Grade 3, County BB Handicap of which we she won by a nice 2 lengths at the wire. She ran an impressive speed of 113 in that race which was held in Arizona at 9.5 furlongs. If she can step into the gate and run that speed again you should see her number on the boards.
4. Pearl River Pulp 7/1 scoobi2 J Maloney
This 5 year old mare sired by War Front has shown she likes the distance of 10 furlongs, but the question is will she like the change in surface from turf to dirt. She has been a very successful mare running on turf and has only been off the boards two times in her fourteen career starts. Her last outing was on 09/21/2018 in Iowa at 10 furlongs in a $60,000 Allowance which she won handily by 5 ½ lengths at the wire. She steps up in class to make a stakes run on a surface that she is not familiar with. Both concern me running against this seasoned field. She will need to prove herself as a challenger.
5. Astute Tornado 5/2 scorehobby5 V Webb
This Smart Strike mare has been running in Grade 1 company her last three outings and found it to be a struggle. Back on 02/10/2018 she ran 8.5 furlongs in California in The Santa Marina Handicap to get up in 3rd in that Grade 1 attempt. She came off a long rest to run on 09/09/2018 in the Grade 1, Superfilly Handicap which she ended up a disappointing 7th in that race in New York. The morning line odds makers have made her the favorite at 5/2 for this race. I feel they may have been a little generous to her with the company she is going to be running against.
6. Son Of Corinthian 9/1 alabasta5 V Buck
She is not a son, but is a daughter sired by Corinthian in a scratch breeding. She comes in with Listed Stakes experience, but has yet to pick up a win at that level. Her last outing was very disappointing for her when she ran on 09/22/2018 in Vermont at 8.5 furlongs in the No Apagues La Luz. She crossed the wire in 14th place running a speed of 97. She is going to have to dig in deep and find a little more fire in her step to put up a good fight.
7. Unworldly Noise 4/1 jbcri47 P Iverson
She comes into this race having had two nice outings in her last few starts. Another filly sired by War Front in a scratch breeding. This Listed Stakes winner found herself 2nd at the wire in her last outing on 09/07/2018 in Ontario in the Jordyns Silver Dirt Mare. She ran a nice speed of 114 and she was closing fast at the wire in this 9.5 furlong race. She should be watched here today and I look for her to make another big close and most likely find herself on the boards.
8. Shamful Moment 9/1 mlafort1 T Gentry
This Dialed In mare has been running well in Starter Allowance races as of late. Can she take the big jump in class to compete against this field? She has shown kindness under the management of her new owner and trainer since being claimed back on 06/30/2018. She comes into this race off a short rest. She has much to overcome and prove.
Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race. Most importantly have fun!!!
Skippy’s Picks
1. Sea The Moon: Comes in off a nice race against G3 company in her last outing.
2. Unworldly Noise: Only off the boards once this year. She looks like she will be there again.
3. Competitive Swag: The top money winner and million dollar horse will get the nod today.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Pearl River Pulp 7/1: She has been slinging lots of sod in her Allowance turf outings. I am going to give her a chance to prove herself on the dirt as my long shot pick today.
Thanks for the article! Shamful Moment is absolute money in the right races but I wanted to give her a shot against a stronger field. If this doesn’t work, I’ll take her back to the SA circuit.
