ASR Tommy and Jimmy Appreciation Series

Maiden Allowance – 2 Year Olds

Dirt 8.5 Furlongs

Welcome to Kentucky in what promises to be a brilliant maiden race with the future stars of ASR.  Before we get to the trainers and their future hopes and dreams let’s ponder the meaning of life, well maybe it’s the sim’s equivalent to that.  What is it that keeps us coming back?

I have yet to win a GI.  I ‘ve only had a handful of other graded wins.  Stakes wins are rarer than I would like.  I have yet to sniff an end of the year award.  I did get one into the derby, but at that point he had already started to fade and was an ultimate longshot.  Is it the thrill of trying to take down the top races?  I’m sure it plays a part.

I get excited every year when I start to plan for my new crop of 2-year old’s.  I love looking at pedigrees and past studs to try to replicate and build off their success.  So much potential.  Sometimes that’s all it ever was, but when, if it clicks, to breed a monster is something we all chase after.  The breeding system is complex, intricate, and downright captivating. So, is that what draws me back?  Again, I’m sure it has its place.

Bringing home that horse from the auction or winning the claim on a horse that looks like he wants more distance and running him back in a few weeks to find out he was craving that extra distance all along and runs lights out.  That gets me dreaming about having a future graded winner from a claimer.  I was able to spot something nobody else could.  Granted I was wrong the first twenty times, but I totally called it this time.  The rags to riches story are something we all want to fall in love with.  Is that what keeps me here?  This plays a role as well I’m certain.

The genius of the game?  It markets itself with the people that make up the community.  This game is imposing, complex, frustrating, time-consuming, and maddeningly hard.  Imagine you stumbled upon the game and it was like so many other areas of life where people guarded their secrets and wanted to win so badly that they would either offer no advice or more menacing still, bad advice.  I can tell you with no qualifications I would have been gone in a matter of days.  Instead from the day I joined there has been a whole host of people ready and willing to give advice, horses, and even develop a relationship that transcends something you traditionally find in the anonymous era of the internet.  There have been so many people that have played a part that have developed my love for this game.  I would love to list them all, but I am in fact human and every day that I asked for the last 10 years so many have been willing to help such as Desperado, Buzz, Squirrel, Cheyenne15, CMD, Lenny, MTK, Metallinut, NextBonus, Smokeglack, and Jacklad.  With all apologies to everyone who I have missed, it is most certainly the people that keep me, and I suspect numerous others coming back.

At ASR we are blessed to have Smokeglack and Jacklad, Jimmy and Tommy, who are willing to help and sacrifice their time to make sure others are enjoying the game as much as they do.  If you don’t believe me just ask them for help and watch what happens.  You will have just signed up for an online version of a BFF.  So this day, while not equivalent of the time and energy they put in, is to honor them for all they do to keep this game that seems to punch you in the face, but alas Tommy and Jimmy are there to pick you back up, dust you off, and send you back in the ring!  Thanks to Jimmy and Tommy, thanks to Roscoe for making this event happen, and thanks to the rez members at ASR for participating in this worthwhile event.

OG MR. ARROGATE – This aptly named colt is making his debut representing BBaffert.  Arrogate has been an immensely popular freshman sire and Baffert is hoping to keep building on that early success.  The scratch-bred is going off at 7/1 just behind a trio going off at 6/1.  The oddsmakers aren’t ruling this one out and you would be wise to not as well.

RUSSIANS – Tees is brining the first of the co-favorites at 6/1 odds.  The colt sired by Giant’s Causeway is making his debut out of the 2nd gate.  His dam was sired by Frankel and went on to place at the stakes level. If you want to bet against a Tees horse go right ahead, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

GENETIC ENGINEER – Out of the 3rd gate is Rharfo’s colt sired by Mineshaft.  He has run 3 previous races with a higher speed figure each time out and hitting the board each time.  His last race at 7 furlongs he showed a bit of a late burst so it will be interesting to see how he handles the added distance here.  He is going off at 16/1 and offers good value.

THE DISMISSER – Representing Hobby is a colt sired by Curlin who has run two previous races improving each time.  He has showed some late speed with his previous effort coming at 7 furlongs with a 79 speed figure.  He is going off at 14-1, but could surprise with the added distance and more experience relatively speaking than others in the field.

RISEN BIZ – RickyBobby submitted the colt sired by Fed Biz.  He is going off at 27/1 odds, but don’t think the odds bother him as he went off at long odds in his maiden race and finished 2nd with a speed of 78 at 7 furlongs.  RickyBobby is hoping for a similar effort in his second try.

WHAT ABOUT US – SmokeGlack brings the first filly sired by Tiznow.  He is hoping she can build on the success of her stakes winning he-mare TO SCHOOL FOR COOL in her debut.  She is going off at 13/1, but you can never count out a SmokeGlack two-year-old.

STYLONTER – Out of the 7th gate is the colt brought by Hawkz.  He is sired by Paynter and his dam was a G2 winning mare out of Bernstein.  He has 3 races under his belt improving speeds each time and hitting the board in both races after going to 7+ furlongs.  His last effort was at 8.5 furlongs with a speed of 82 closing late to place just behind the winner.  He is going off at 21/1 odds and with some more improved speed could figure into the mix.

COWARAMUP – KingDamo submits this colt sired by Cowtown Cat.  His dam is sired by Galileo offering the potential to be viable on dirt and turf.  He is going off at 22/1 odds and wins the award for making me check the spelling no less than 6 times.

SEA SHARE – Representing MichaelB and making his debut is the colt sired by Star Witness.  His dam is sired by Sea The Stars and was stakes placed.  His pedigree suggests this is another horse that could be viable both on dirt and turf.  The odds have been set at 15/1, but MichaelB is hoping to surprise the rest of the field and oddsmakers alike.

GIANT SENSE – In the 10th gate is Crandy’s filly sired by Street Sense.  The backend of the pedigree oozes potential, but that potential was not quite recognized in her dam Nijinksy’s Giant, sired by Giant’s Causeway.  The filly is making her debut against the boys and gets relatively good odds at 9/1.

GOLD AND GRAY – Marto is bringing a filly sired by Graydar.  The scratch bred filly will be making her debut and is hoping to draw on the Unbridled’s Song X Mr. P success.  She is going off at 20/1 odds in this race.

UNFRIENDING – This colt is from Selurnivek’s stables sired by Tapit.  His dam sired by Elusive Quality was a GI and $1M winner.  He has run three previous races closing each time to hit the board.  Selurnivek is hoping the extra distance will be what the colt is looking for to step it up in speed from his previous 78 speed effort at 7.5 furlongs.  The oddsmakers have placed him at 11/1 today.

GABBY’S GIANT – The second of our trio of co-favorites is out of Tops stables.  The filly starting out of the 13th gate is sired by Giant’s Causeway.  She will be making her debut against the boys and is going off at 6/1.

THANKS GUYS – DesertDog has entered this filly sired by Daredevil.  She is making her debut and her dam was sired by Sky Mesa.  She has the longest odds of the field at 55/1, “So you’re saying there’s a chance!”.

ASR’S ROLL – Jacklad brings our last of the co-favorites, all sired by Giant’s Causeway.  The colt is making his debut and is as blue blood as a blue blood gets.  Say that fast five times and this colt will have already crossed the finish line.  Oddsmakers have placed 6/1 odds and it’s easy to see why.

ALWAYS APPRECIATE – Broohar rounds out our field from the 16th gate with his colt sired by Nyquist.  The scratch bred is making his debut with the familiar backend playing on Mr. P & Danzig lines.  His odds have been set at 11/1 for the race.

Good luck to all the trainers in the race.  Thanks again to Tom and Jimmy for having us at ASR and all the effort they provide both up front and behind the scenes.  Also, big shout to Roscoe once again for making this happen!  I could not be prouder to call each of you my friends!

I would of quit several times if not for the Rez and the community. There is no doubt about that.
Thanks to everyone at ASR and thanks to others in the game that help new players. The ones in the chat rooms who give newbies free horses and advice. The ones who write the articles that include your horse…no matter how many times I always look forward to reading those.
Y’all make the game what it is

I’m truly sorry you feel that way. Your inclusion was meant as an olive branch, and it is the truth by the way, but I am sorry you didn’t see it that way.
