California hosts the Sore Prospect Dirt Juvenile. Ten 2 Year Old Colts and Geldings going 7 Furlongs

Sore Prospect Dirt Juvenile

Restricted to 2 Year Olds, 7 Furlongs, Fast Dirt,

Track: California, Purse: $100,000

Post Time: Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 1:00 pm.

I hopped on a flight and headed to the Golden State of California.  I have been hanging out at the barns looking over the horses that will be entered in the Sore Prospect Dirt Juvenile.  This open race which is restricted to 2 year olds appears to be full of some nice looking contenders as they all are going for their first listed stakes win.   The 2 Year Olds always seem the toughest to handicap, but as we draw closer to the end of the season they should be getting their legs now and starting to learn to behave a little better for their jockeys.   It looks like there will be seven colts and three geldings who will be fighting to get to the wire first.  There are lots of nice contenders in this race who could show up to get their picture taken.  The morning line odds and post positions have been set.  Let’s go take a look at this nice field of colts and geldings and see how they looking for the Sore Prospect Dirt Juvenile.

Horse/Odds                                                       Owner                                  Jockey

1.  Delivering Dootsin  6/1                             cut2004                                N Mayberry

This colt sired by Bluegrass Cat comes in off a nice $75,000 Allowance win here in California back on 08/31/2018.  He got up clipping the wire by ¼ in that 7 furlong race of which he roared down the stretch after breaking away from the middle of the pack.  He posted a respectable 85 speed in that race.  He does have one stakes attempt from back in May of this year in the Royal Rhythm Dirt Juvenile where he failed to find his rhythm and ended up 7th and was 2 ¼ lengths back at the wire.  He is much improved since then and I think he will contend at the wire.

2.  Curlin For Gold  5/1                                    ddkstables11                     D Givins

This nicely bred colt sired by Curlin ran last on 08/12/2018 in a NW2L Allowance going 8 furlongs of which he finished 3rd and was 3 ¼ lengths back.  He only has three career starts and is one of the two non-allowance winners in the race.  He has improved on speed in each of his outings and will need to show more improvement as he steps up for his first listed stakes attempt.  He did draw a nice jockey who will be flying in from Kentucky for the mount.

3.  Prado Pueblo  12/1                                    survivoreh                          F Duffy

This nice looking scratch bred horse drew concern in the morning line due to his lack of experience and speed ratings.  In his only career start back on 07/23/2018 he ran in a NW1x Allowance race going 4.5 furlongs in a four horse field (one was CPU).  He won that race by a head at the wire.  He is coming in off a nice rest which he needs as he attempts to show he can run in the company of this more experienced field.  He has much to prove today and will need to find some extra gas in the tank.  He locked in a nice jockey to take the mount which may help him find it.

4.  Babu De Plume  10/1                                                goldenboy                          M Maguire

He has stakes experience, but this Day Of The Cat gelding has not hit the boards in those attempts.  In his last outing on 09/02/2018 he ran in the Deposit Jose Dirt Juvenile in Illinois and found himself 5 lengths back at the wire and in 7th place.  He posted his best speed to date in that race running a 79.  His stakes experience will help him, but he has to find some more gas in the tank if he is to take the wire first.

5.  Hemp’s Dinero  7/2                                   boudin2                               A Jolly

He comes in as the morning line favorite after having a nice career start.  He only has 3 lifetime starts, but has never been worse than 2nd.  This colt by Liam’s Map found his way to the winners circle in his last outing on 08/20/2018 in Texas going 7 furlongs in a NW2L Allowance.  He best the field in that race by 1 ¾ lengths and ran a nice 85 speed.  He grabbed a nice jockey for this race which will also help as he attempts to put a new feather in his cap.  He likes to run up front which is where you should expect him to be in this race.

6.  Callmymoon  15/1                                      oldmoonfarms26             N Lawton

This Austrian bred gelding that was sired by Dandino comes in off a win in Virginia in a 6 furlong Starter Allowance back on 08/09/2018.  He came from way back to catch the leaders after the Third Call and post a win by ½ length.  He has four career starts and has posted 3 wins to his credit.  He grabs a nice jockey today which should help try to compete against this field.  Starting as a Maiden Claimer he has come a long way, but has he improved enough?  He will have to dig in deep here and show some more leg to get him home first.

7.  Climb To Glory  9/2                                    petersd0                              M Peters

This colt sired by Honor Code had a nice win back in May in a 6 furlong race in Texas in a $67,000 Allowance.  He immediately jumped into Graded Stakes company and found he was not quite ready.  In his last outing on 08/24/2018 he ran in the Snow Squall Dirt Juvenile in Colorado and showed up 6th in that race some 3 ½ lengths back at the wire.  He comes in to take another stab at a listed stakes here but will need to find some marked improvement from his last two outings.  His jockey has experience in riding this horse, but gave him a lack luster performance.  If he finds his legs and digs in he could find the boards in this race.

8.  Strike Club  10/1                                          dontbetonme12               Z Kentucky

This Strike Club colt comes in after posting a win in his last outing which came on 08/19/2018 in Washington going 6 furlongs where he closed big to best the field by ¾ of a length at the wire.  He has shown nice improvement in his speed ratings each race.  His best speed rating of 82 came in his last outing.  He has four career starts and has only been off the boards one time.  Look for him to close late as he tries to catch the rabbits in this race.

9.  Top Of The Market  6/1                           aabulb2yos                         E Eberhard

This colt is sired by Tavistock and is the only horse in the field with a Stakes Placing feather in his cap.  He earned that badge back on 06/02/2018 going 6 furlongs on the turf in Massachusetts the Atlantian Turf Juvenile where he placed 2nd just a length off the lead at the wire.  In his last outing on the dirt in Colorado going 6 furlongs in the Snow Squall Dirt Juvenile he showed up 4th where he was 1 ¾ lengths back, but posted his best speed to date of 83.  Look for him to compete hard today in the stretch coming for home.

10.  Stone Works  7/1                                     earthling                              T Buzz

This gelding sired by Outwork last ran on the turf on 09/20/2018.  It was a NW2L Allowance going 7 furlongs.  He showed up 5th at the wire some 3 lengths back.  He has 5 career starts and has been race heavily on short rests.  But coming into this race he is showing up with only nice days to catch his breath.  This short rest period, along with a switch back in surfaces draws great concern.  He will have to really dig down deep to find the stamina for this race.

Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race.  Most importantly have fun!!!

Skippy’s Picks

1.  Top Of The Market:  Good experience and has shown improvement at the stakes level.

2.  Delivering Dootsin: Hard not to find a place for this top money winner in the crowd.

3.  Hemp’s Dinero:  Keeps improving with every race and has never been off the boards.

Tarton’s Long Shot

Strike Club:  There were many good choices for a long shot today, but I am going with this one.  He showed nice improvement in his last outing.  He is worth a shot and could hit the boards and be a spoiler.
