Grade 2-The Lowdown in Surrey-England, 6F, Turf, 2 year old Fillies

The Lowdown

Surrey-England, Grade 2, 6 Furlongs, Restricted to 2 Year Olds, Fillies Only

As I was looking for my next race to handicap I found in the Racing Form what looks to be a honey of a race at Surrey in England.  The Lowdown is a Grade 2 race for 2 year old fillies only.  The race has drawn a full field of fourteen nice looking fillies, several of which are Stakes winners.  The track is going to be listed as Firm Turf for this field when in runs on Saturday, August 25, 2018 with post time being 2:20 pm.  The morning line odds are out along with their post positions.  Let’s take a look at this group of fillies and see how they might fair as they all go for their first Graded win.

Horse/Odds                                                       Owner                                  Jockey

1.  I Am Candy  6/1                                           chillingfarms                               T Small

Here time out she ran in the Grade 3 The Capital Stakes where she broke from gate thirteen.  Today she will break from gate number one which she should like much better.  She never got a break in her last race and found herself finishing 7th at the wire some four lengths off the lead.  That race is her only race of which she has found herself off the boards.  She has three prior wins in four starts to her credit including a Stakes win in Norway at 5 furlongs back on 04/13/2018.  I look for her to rebound with some better results in this race.

2.  Crossland Court  15/1                                wally789                                       J Ventura

She comes in on a Hot Streak wining her last three outings.  She has four races to her credit and has never found herself off the boards.  Her last outing came on 07/15/2018 in Queensland where she best a small field of horses in that $34,100 Allowance race.  She is sired by Hampton Court and is a Kentucky bred.  You have to take a look at her in this race as you cannot argue with success.

3.  Bed Timer  14/1                                          deeprock                                     G Owans

This filly out of Ireland comes in with a win in her last outing in a $34,100 Allowance race at 5 furlongs on 07/13/2018 in West Virginia.  She makes her way across the pond to throw her name in the hat for her first Graded start.  She ran in the Pharqueen Turf Juvenile Stakes in Minnesota back in June of which she came in 4th at the wire some 4 ½ lengths off the lead.  She is taking on a long travel to come to this race and her speed ratings concern me as well.  She will need to step it up to compete with this crowd.

4.  Knight Lite  27/1                                        darkstars3                                L Radzinski

Comes into this race with only one career start and that was over in Pennsylvania on 07/05/2018 in an Allowance race of which she finished 2nd one length off the leader at the wire.  She is an Irish Breed and makes her way back across the pond to start here.  The long travel and lack of experience may hurt her today.

5.  Comeback Sas  10/1                                  irehold                                      D Nickesy

Broke her maiden back in March in a Hot Race in Ireland and has not fund the wire first since in her last two starts.  In her last outing at 6.5 furlongs in Newmarket she found herself coming in 6that the wire some 4 ¼ lengths back.  She has shown improvement in speed with every outing.  She will need that again here today.

6.  Centing  23/1                                              deepesr5                                 R Whisper

She broke her maiden back in May and followed that up with a 2nd place finish in Indiana in a small Allowance race on 07/07/2018 of which she was ¼ back from the leader who caught her at the wire in this small four horse race.  Long travel and speed concern me here as she takes a big jump in class to face this crowd.

7.  Went By Ya Now  14/1                              fastvett                                    A Reed

After four straight wins in Claiming and Allowance race she jumped into the Grade 1, The Wet Bikini Stakes on 07/21/2018 in South Africa of which she was met with great disappointment showing up 9th in that race some 10 ¼ lengths back at the wire.  She steps down today to hopefully meet a little nicer crowd of horses.  I think you should give her a look at the betting window on your exotics.

8.  Iron Seed  60/1                                          lightng102                            C Crawford

Broke her maiden in a Maiden Claimer back in May.  In her Allowance debut in Indiana in a four horse field for a $19,500 purse she could only find 3rd at the wire some 4 ¼ off the lead.  She makes way across the pond to compete here today of which I have concerns for her due to past performances.  She will need to dig in deep and find extra speed and overcome the jet lag.

9.  Pivotal Causeway  5/1                              dontbetonme8                     D Evans

Comes in with good prior Stakes experience.  In her last outing she came in 2nd in the Deep Impact Stakes in Japan on 07/14/2018 against an Open field.  Prior to that race she won the More Slew Turf Juvenile which was restricted to fillies in which she best her closest challenger by 1 ½ lengths at the wire.  She is scratch bred horse in this race and she likes to be up front or on the lead.  She will be tough here today as the field tries to chase her down.

10.  Severance Road Bed  6/1                      bedford                                  J Stivers

Has had a nice start in her first three career starts.  She started out on the turf, but in her last outing she ran in a Local Allowance race for $43,800 on the dirt in Ireland.  She took that race by 1 ¼ lengths at the wire proving she can contend on a dirt track.  She comes back to the turf today for her fourth career start and first Stakes attempt.  She like to be up front where she will find her hands full if she goes for the lead.

11.  Master Caster  7/1                                   smallracn                              M Zeus

Picks up a nice jockey who is flying in from Spain to ride for him today, but will it be enough?  She has only one career start and that was back on 07/07/2018 in Ohio where she went wire to wire in a four horse race (one was CPU).  She ran a nice speed of 70 in that race.  Long travel and big jump in class certainly go against her today.  Perhaps M Zeus can help find her a little extra gas in the tank and gives her a good trip.

12.  Savamoon  13/1                                        oldmoonfarmslox              E Newcomb

While surveying the entries for this race around the barns my ear caught a little chirp of information from a little birdie that this horse was a late entry as a “rabbit” for I Am Candy.  However with all the speed and front runners in this race I question if my little birdie is right.  Regardless Savamoon comes into the race with merit of her own.  She last ran on 07/12/2018 in a Local Allowance race in New Zealand.  She did run up front or on the lead for much of that 6 furlong race.  She has three career starts and has never found herself off the board.  She might be a good play at the betting window at 13:1 odds.

13.  Singular Cause  7/2                                 canyong8                             V Gardner

Breaking your maiden and jumping into Stakes company the next race and pulling off back to back wins does not happen often, but it sure is nice when it does.  In her last outing on 06/30/2018 she won the Donna Hollandia Turf Juvenile where she went wire to wire hold off her challengers by a neck at the wire.  She has the speed and she has the experience and she has a prior stakes win, but does she have the ability to handle this outside post position she has drawn.  She is a nice scratch bred filly and I think we should see her contending at the wire.

14.  Ninety One Gold  30/1                           drsafbreds                            P Bangs

She has been shuffled around like a new deck of cards at the blackjack table at the Mirage Casino in Las Vegas.  Her last outing was on 07/07/2018 in Washington.  She came in second in that Allowance race a lengh off the leader in a small field of only four horses.  Her speed seems to be detraction to the morning line odds makers.  She will really need to dig in deep to compete with this crowd today from that far outside post.

Good luck to all horses and all owners of this race.  Most importantly have fun!!!

Skippy’s Picks

1.  Pivotal Causeway:  I think she can handle the post position and looked good in last two Stakes outings.

2.  I Am Candy: Drew a favorable post this outing she will like.  I will be looking for her at the wire.

3.  Singular Cause:  If she can handle that unfavorable post and not run out of gas she should be there.

Tarton’s Long Shot

Went By Ya Now:  At 14/1 and improving in speed over every outing I am giving her the nod as my Long Shot choice.  She is dropping down in Class and I hope she has gotten enough rest to compete against this field of fine fillies.
