The Breeding Puzzle – Solved? NOT LIKELY!

Dingo333 logo                         My Answer to My Breeding Dilemma

Thank you to Spinround and Ivanyamil, who took the time to respond to My Breeding Dilemma. With so many new authors submitting so many fine articles to the BTB the only drawback is that an article doesn’t stay very long on the main page. Therefore this follow up article is coming a little sooner than I originally planned. Of the 10 matings we came out with 10 healthy babies (7 colts and 3 fillies). They were all sent to the track to compete in MSW races ranging from 5 to 6 furlongs. The surface selected for each was based on my (probably flawed) preference based on their breeding.

The following table will show the pairings I selected and how each baby faired on their debut appearance along with my planned next start for each.

Well after their 1st runs it was the 3 girls who came to the fore, with 2 wins and a 5th place netting the stable SIM$54,900 and more importantly 110 Breeding Points which is approx. 30% of the 342 BP’s the 9 cheaper youngsters cost, a return I am extremely happy with after 1 round of starts. Of the 6 boys none returned any SIM$ or BP’s that is definitely a very disappointing result, but as ever I am optimistic that some will improve 2nd time out (yeah right sure they will). The big plan going forward is to use BP’s made from this stable during 2018 to breed at least 19 youngsters early 2019 utilising my current stock of mares plus some I have claimed and will retire at the end of this year.

The 10th horse in our stable Breakfast Dancer did manage a check for $1012 for his 5th place finish and 10 BP’s but has a long way to go to recover the 424 BP’s he cost. Hopefully a dry track and a change to Turf will bring an improvement at his next start. All BP’s earned by Breakfast Dancer will be used to find a sire to mate with a mare I choose in early 2019 (cost of the mare will be covered by YDR credits or accumulated BP’s). This should give us 2 full stables of 2 year olds next year that will be utilised in the same manner going forward.

I would certainly appreciate any comments on both the matings I chose (good or bad all opinions welcome). Also, if you have any ideas or comments on my forward plans for these youngsters please feel free to make your thoughts known. The plan going forward is to publish ongoing progress reports after each round of starts with plans for their next race shown. With a planned 7 to 8 week minimum break between starts this should be easily done. The only thing I can see that would change that would be if one of these youngsters actually turns out to be more than expected and is held back with longer spacing between runs, and gets out of sequence (a problem I would love to have).

Cheers

Linton

I would think those with 50 something numbers should be running for a tag next time…just my opinion, Why you might ask?? Because you can get away with it.

I have always had a tendency to not run my 2yo’s for tags until later in the year after trying both surfaces as well as going 2 turns. Unless their times are totally terrible after 3 or 4 races. Too scared of losing a “champion” LOL

Didnt match any of your breedings, but there are some of them that show talent. Good luck with all of them.

For me, any 2 year old that doesnt break the 50 SP mark in their first two races is a candidate to run for a tag or the auction. Between 50 and 55 probably will run them for 40K or higher, and 56 onwards wil give them the benefit of the doubt in MSW, but not for long.
