European Sire Stats Analysis

I compiled a list of leading sires that stand in Europe, after analyzing their results I compiled a list of stallions that stand out.

I used data from 2015, 2016, and partially 2017

In order to make the list, the horse must still be alive and not pensioned. Using a criteria of 10% or higher black type horses and 5% or greater graded horses. The list is a bit longer than the North American list but we must also consider that Europe has 5.2% of all races as black type vs 3.7% in the US, so this is bound to skew the numbers a little bit. It will come as no surprise that Galileo is heads and shoulders above any other stallion in Europe and has been for many years. There are a couple surprises on the list worth noting and some that did not make the cut.

The data is based on stallions standing all or partial year in Europe, results are from all regions of the world and not limited to European racing returns only.

Meeting the criteria for both 2015 and 2016.

Galileo
Shamardal
Dubawi
Teofilo
Pivotal
Dansili
Sea the Stars
Fastnet Rock
Lope De Vega
Soldier Hollow
Beat Hollow
Adlerflug

Meeting the criteria in either 2015 or 2016

Dark Angel
Manduro
Doyen
Rail Link
Kendargent
Power
Dragon Pulse
Frankel
Areion
Azamour

Next level that are close to meeting the criteria but fall just a bit short.

Invincible Spirit
Mastercraftsman
Kodiac
Champs Elyses
Dylan Thomas
New Approach

Noted up and comers with good early indications.

Frankel
Le Havre
Siyouni
Showcasing
Dream Ahead
Weiner Walzer
Sepoy

Again like the previous article on American Sires, there is some variation between real world returns and sim performance, however it seems that the European sires are more in line with reality except for Galileo who seems to under perform in the SIM vs his real world numbers which are astronomical. Galileo, Sea the Stars and Dubawi are on another level even when compared to others on this list, they clearly stand out in every category.

In looking at all Northern Hemisphere stallions including Asia in the mix, the only stallion meeting the criteria I used for both North American and Europe is Deep Impact, he is heads and shoulders above any other stallion in Asia and it not even close. Next best is King K and he only hits at about 5% Black type runners.

If I can find a good sire list resource for Australia/NZ based stallions with the same criteria I will try to put together a list for them as well.

  • Interesting reading though it does back up Mike is doing a good job with sim ratings many sires high on the list have been upgraded to reflect these results already. Though you would need to research the figures produced as they will tell you why some things as they are. Beat Hollow no longer covers flat mares so has a very small pool of older horses a couple being good, Rail link and Dylan Thomas also fit that bill the results therefore being not relevant. It would be impossible for Frankel, Power and Dragon Pulse to reach the list both years as they only had their first runners in 2016. Dream Ahead and Sepoy are both struggling at stud to attract mares. Weiner Walzer if you look at the Racing Post has sire nothing of note he is not Adlerflug. The other bit of information which I know where you got it from the % of stakes races is correct per your source but the source is factually incorrect. it only takes data from 5 European countries (the best) not all of them that race, when you add this data the % of stakes races reduces considerably or to look at it another way if you only took New York, California, Kentucky, Florida and Ontario for North America the percentage of stakes races run would be a lot higher.

You are far more knowledgeable about what is going on in Europe so I appreciate your input.
