Business As (Un)usual
Two-year-olds can make fools out of you (and me), and Miss Hennypenny was out to get this journalist–no more running style cracks from me!
As expected, longshot Tropical Trophy went to right to the lead. Storm the Skies, stakes winner Bernardini’s Hill, and third choice Romans Nine kept her company, and the rest of the field ranged out behind with the eventual winner settling back in eleventh, ahead of only Roses on the Moon and Waki Kitten.
But 4.5 furlongs isn’t a long way, and things started happening fast at the top of the stretch. Bernardini’s Hill and Storm the Skies had begun to fade, but Tropical Trophy was still holding out against a determined Romans Nine. The favorite, Its Over Now, was trying to build some momentum, but Miss Hennypenny from midpack was the only one making any headway at all. S. Oland showed uncharacteristic nerve, swinging him mount wide and going once to the whip, and she found another gear, bursting past a dead game Romans Nine. Tropical Trophy stayed on for third, with Its Over Now outpaced late and Bernardini’s Hill picking up the last minor check.
