Welcome to New Jersey for todays feature the Grade II WIZZER STAKES over a mile on the dirt for the fillies and mares. With seven of the eleven runners being within a point and a half of each otherit looks to be a close call. Lets take a look at the runners-
ALY CAUSEWAY(IRE) (GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) x ALYDAR x SEATTLE SLEW) cvd3
She has won almost half of her races and this is her trip with her last three runs at this distance producing sp’s of 102, 106 and 101 , including a win in the Grade III Be Forewarned stakes. She likes to come from off the pace and is pretty consistant and can be expected to produce at least a 100 sp today. Should be battling for the money.
EXILE ON MAIN ST (THUNDER GULCH x DANEHILL x SEATTLE SLEW) super18
Todays favourite and rightly so, with this being her trip and with six of her last seven runs producing sp’s over 102, with a 106 latest. Another who likes to come from off the pace and she must be a cert for a top three due to her consistancy. Another 106 like her last run and she would probably get the win.
SKIP DANCER (SKIP AWAY x GREY DAWN II x NATIVE DANCER) russ
Another with a string of 100+sp’s but only two recent wins in an allowance and a stakes. Her recent graded runs have seen no better than a third and there’s a slight suspicion that she cant’t quite get there at this grade. Should run a good race from up with the pace but could get swamped by the late finishers.
WAKIWILD (FOREST WILDCAT x MISWAKI x NIJINSKY II) turfsurf
Not as consistant as some of the others but has three good sp’s over 100 recently and has a second in a Grade II. More relavant may have been her previous race where she was leading at the threequarter mark having come from just off the pace only to get beat into second. She has a bit of a sprinting pedigree and may be worth a try at 7f. Dangerous but I can’t see a win today.
ESPRESSO D’ITALIA (MEDAGLIA D’ORO x MISWAKI x SEEKING THE GOLD) lasthope1
Has some good recent races and decent sp’s but seems to run two good races before thowing in a bad one. Her last two races were good with a second and a fifth in Grade II’s and her best sp would give her more than a real chance, but it could be time for another bad race if she follows her pattern.
SMILE THERAPY (MISNOMER x TRICON x SAINT BALLADO) e2912
Cheaply bred and has won five in a row, but thet have been claimers (3) a starter and an allowance with a best sp of 99. That form doesn’t cut it here and while she masy well win stakes this should prove too much.
WHITE FLAG (TWINING x SEATTLE DANCER x DAYJUR) ryantoga
Has run a 104 eight starts back but has been steadily on the downgrade ever since with hwer last run producing only a 91 sp in a stakes. Can’t see why she should reverse that trend today and she will be fighting it out for last place.
TECHNICALLY T(IRE) (THEATRICAL(IRE) x SADLER’S WELLS x SECRETARIAT) youngnhung
She has been best at around 9.5f recently and this trip looks too short. There have also been a few recent poor runs and a best recent sp of 99 will not be good enough today. Another who’ll be fighting for the wooden spoon.
JEERAVAKA (SPINNING WORLD x TABASCO CAT x ELA-MANA-MOU(IRE)) bayourace
This looks to be her trip with a recent 105 sp to win a stakes race. Only one recent graded race where she finished fourth in a Grade I. Another 105 would put her right in the picture here but can she do it at this level? Looks a lively outsider and may be hard to catch from the front. In with a chance of a top three.
TRADE WINDS (CAME HOME x CAERLEON x LEAR FAN) tothewins
Another consistant 100+sp runner and another who will be trying to win from the front. Has a recent Grade III win at todays trip with a 104 sp and again that must give her a chance of a top three today. Can she hold off the late finishers and repel the other front runners? She certainly has a chance.
HOTRUSH (TABASCO CAT x FORTY NINER x BROAD BRUSH) rcdlogan
Another veteran who has looked like a step up in trip is in order in her recent stakes runs ay around 7f but she ran over 8f in a grade III four runsd back and could only finish ninth. So while this may well be her trip it may be she can’t be competative at this grade. Not for me today as her recent form is just not good enough.
CONCLUSION-
Well how to pick a winner from this lot. There had better be plenty of film in the photo finish camera as it looks likely to be needed here. Half a dozen could finish in a heap here with two or three closer piling in on the front runners. Can’t pick a winner but should be a fun race.
