Doing a quick analysis of the field for the Grade II The Hall of Fame in historic Upstate New York, it is clear that owners are trying to take advantage of what they feel is somewhat of a soft field. Six of the eight participants have not won a graded event yet, and the two that have done it have some questions to be answered. Lets take a look at them:

From the end of 2015, in which trainer blankpoin3 switched him to the turf, to the start of this year, he was doing very nicely, with three wins in five tries, including a win in the Grade III Dracula Stake sin April. Then, connections tried the logical step up in class, just to know what’s under the hood. In two Grade Is since then, he didn’t do bad in the 2000 Guineas, but then faltered dramatically in his most recent effort. That race was his first after a two month break, so he should be fitter now, and the drop in class should serve him well. Draws very conveniently and if he has recovered, he has a big chance to score in here.

Three wins in four starts in 2016, and looking better and better with each subsequent start. This son of War Front has been a different animal since transferring to the lawn, with seven placing in eight tries. His last race was his best lifetime, just missing in the Grade I Queen’s Dish, and now takes the always helpful cut back in distance and drops in class. He should be flying down the stretch and is my pick to win at 7/1 odds.

Another horse that should benefit from a contested pace up front. This colt also benefited from a switch to the grass, with three wins and two second place finishes in five starts, doing it the old Zenyatta way, coming from way off the pack. The fact that he is taking a step up in class is something I always like as a handicapper, because it tells you the horse is doing well, and there is confidence from his trainer baffstar that his charge will keep improving as he steps up. He should be a major player in this race.

Extremely consistent colt, with five wins and three seconds in eight lifetime starts. Coming from the four hole, he should be forwardly placed form the start and has shown the capacity of effectively running these nine furlongs. His last race was his first try at the stakes level, and easily took the listed Big Cat Diary Turf Route. You can say he was aided by the give on the ground, but there is no denial in saying that he has shown great staying power fro such an inexperienced colt. Watch out for him is he can gran an easy enough lead, as he can take them wire to wire. Very dangerous, and the morning line make agrees, making him the 3-1 favorite.

Good colt out of the underrated Poet’s Voice. By looking at his past performances you can realize he is starting to feel the effects of a long and tedious campaign. He has eight races already in 2016, and now his trainer highlanders tries with him again at the Grade II level, after that last race, which was his worst lifetime. The morning line maker respects him enough to assign a very low 6/1 ML odds to him, but I’ll certainly pass on him.

Interesting entry in here. This colt was a work horse early in his career, with a whopping fourteen races as a two year old and one in January as a three year old. Then, his trainer jockeyrobledo45 gave him a much deserved rest, and he sent him for an extended, four month stay in the farm, and apparently he came back a much better horse. In his first race back, he did not disgrace himself in the Grade II Colonial Derby. It is clear he has to improve to have a chance to win, but at 12/1, we can not discard him to be a part of the exotics. Price play.

Multiple Grade I Gio Ponti sired this colt, out of a stakes winning dam. He has shown plenty of early zip in his outings, and coming from the seventh slot in the gate, instructions from trainer pit boss should be to try to get to the lead at all costs. The problem I see with this horse is that he has not demonstrated the ability to run the nine furlongs effectively. So he should be pretty prominent for the first fractions, from then on its a big questions mark. Not sold on his chances, I prefer to side with others much more tested at the distance.

He is the only Grade II winner in this group, when he wired the Fountain of Ute in Florida. But two things to take into consideration: this was five months ago, and it was running on the main track, in which he has run in ten out of his fourteen lifetimes races. He can be the speed of the speed in here, but the outside post does not do any favors for him, and he will be pushed to grab a lead that maybe contested enough to take a toll on him down the stretch. 7/2 is a very low morning line for a colt that has not won any stakes on turf, so I will pass on him.
