G2 I Messed Up Stakes
Welcome all to Delaware for the debut running of the G2 I Messed Up Stakes in what will be an interesting race over 14f. The race will be run on good turf for a purse of $250,000 and has attracted a field of twelve mares. Lets take a look at how they will be loaded into the barriers.
PP #1 – BARB’S RETURN(GB) – IN THE WINGS(GB) x SHARPEN UP(GB) x RIBOT (5heffsbarn) 8/1
This 5yo mare is bred to run distance and despite being out of form recently, she has been a great long router throughout her career including a three length win over Getaloadofthis in the G1 Brisbane Distaff and seven wins and four listed stakes placings. Although finishing 3rd first up this year in the Rain Tootsie Challenge Stakes, she was seven lengths behind the 2nd placed Getaloadofthis and then was over six lengths from the winner when 5th in the G2 Lets Play Too Stakes in 3119. Runs well when stalking the leaders during the run and will fail if she is not in touch with them this week. B Ironside aboard this week with a 19.1% success rate this year which will help as they attempt to push past the leaders in the stretch.
PP #2 – LAPHROAIG – TAPIT x HONOR GRADES x MR. PROSPECTOR (waremblem8) 9/1
Although her breeding does not suggest she would love 14f, this 4yo mare has really developed in her last three runs which have been in listed stakes. Her last run as a 3yo saw her place 2nd at 11f and then a 2nd at 13f first up this year to go on and win at 14f in 3140 breaking the 100 SP mark for the first time. She has both winning form as well as distance form and could really give this race a fair shake this week as she can either lead or take a sit off the leader and still run up to her best. Jockey T Crow is only a 7.7% winner this year however he is not the worst and has seven years experience under his belt and I think the combination will run well and will look for her to finish in the money again this week at value odds.
PP #3 – ROCK RIVER QUEST – RAINBOW QUEST x BUSTINO(GB) x L’ENJOLEUR (airbiscuit) 12/1
Trainer airbiscuit has done a great job with this 5yo mare since acquiring her almost 2yrs ago. She is a four time listed stakes winner including the Total Wolf Special Stakes at 14f and is also twice G1 placed and three times listed placed. Her form after the Total Wolf has not been great and although starting this year with a 2nd in listed stakes, there were only three other horses. She then stepped up to the G2 Lets Play Too Stakes last time out and was beaten by over nineteen lengths by Magical Mia at 13f and will have to do a form backflip to win this. She has never run a SP over 100 but having said that, her last twenty-four races have been at 10f +. She is a deep closer by nature and will have a heap of ground to make up when they start to move.
PP #4 – OTTO PLATINUM – MINESHAFT x SAINT BALLADO x UNBRIDLED (Verona) 15/1
Very strange career to date after running on dirt in first half then switching to turf. Trainer Verona obviously has bred her to stay and she has rewarded with wins at 14 to 16f on dirt and turf. Best results have been a 2nd in the G2 Longchamp Marathon at 16f and a four and a half length win last time out in 3126 in the Hard Gulch Memorial Stakes at 14f and breaking 100 SP for the first time. She defiantly has claims to run very well in this race and I will be having a go at these odds. Jockey Z Wylde has won fourteen races at 10.2% this year and is in for an interesting ride this week. She has gone wire to wire in her last two races however she can also win when closing from the back or taking a sit just off the leaders. Cannot wait to see this race!
PP #5 – PERFECTA – PLEASANTLY PERFECT x DANEHILL x KEY TO THE MINT (bellissimo) 6/1
Although this 4yo mare only has five wins from twenty-eight starts, she has run over 100 SP for the first time this year doing it twice for a 2nd in listed stakes and a win last time out in the Slipstream Challenge Stakes both at 11f in what was her first stakes victory after eight placings and a G2 place. 12f may be a better step up for her as she is 3/1-2-0 this year with a 2nd at listed level at 10.5f in her other run. She looks most comfortable at the higher end of the classic range but breeding suggests she may get the 14f now as a 5yo. Her best SP in four runs at 12f and one at 14f is 87 and she will have to improve on this to get anywhere near them this week. She generally sits in the first few off the leader in the run and will either fade if the distance is too much or run on nicely and be a good contender to possibly run in the money. Place chance.
PP #6 – A.P. WILD THING – A.P. INDY x LOUP SAUVAGE x RAJA BABA (princessj) 16/1
Massive step up for this 5yo mare who has raced mainly on dirt but has switched to turf more recently. She is still to break the 100k mark and has not shown that she will be anywhere near the leaders when they hit the line this week. Best result came last time out at listed stakes level when placing 2nd only missing by a half length at 10f coming from eight lengths behind. This will be her first attempt at graded level however she will not be up to the task and would be looking for her in an allowance or listed level at this distance. Prefer others.
PP #7 – MAGICAL MIA(IRE) – GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) x SADLER’S WELLS x BUCKPASSER (boots) 7/2
Serious breeding yielding serious results is the story for this 5yo mare who has won over 60% of her races including the G2 Lets Play Too Stakes last time out in which she won by over a length, two G3 stakes and eight listed stakes. She has a habit of putting a series of wins together and will be looking for her eighth consecutive win this week. Great mix of speed and stamina throughout her breeding which allows her to sit mid-field and swoop on the leaders in the stretch. She has run at 14f twice resulting in a G1 3rd and won the G3 Triage Distaff in her last start as a 4yo. Jockey H Ross aboard has a 18.3% winning rate and the pair will be hard to stop when rattling home this week.
PP #8 – GETALOADOFTHIS – DISTORTED HUMOR x ELA-MANA-MOU(IRE) x TURN-TO 9/2 (fab19)
This great 5yo mare has won seven listed and three graded races as well as finishing 2nd on four occasions in G1 races. Finished off last year with wins in both listed then graded stakes at 14 then 12f respectively and is coming into this race off a 2nd placing in the Rain Tootsie Challenge Stakes going 14f in what was just a lead up run will be fresh after a eight week break. Definitely one of the top chances in this race and is bred to nail this route with the aid of I Wimpy on board who has twelve wins at 11.5% this year. Generally sits around mid-field and runs on however she also has the ability to go from wire to wire. Should figure in the trifecta.
PP #9 – SECTION EIGHT – MUJAHID x HALLING x HIGH TOP(GB) (bmr001) 30/1
After having 3yo colt Whirling Date nailed last week, trainer bmr is looking to turn 4yo mare Section Eight around this week after she has been experiencing a major slump finishing 4th and 7th in her first two runs this year beaten by a total of forty-six lengths. Hitting a purple patch in August last year, she had back to back listed stakes wins at 12f but has only managed an allowance win and two 3rd listed stakes placings in the ten runs since. She will need to improve out of sight to be in this as she has never posted a SP over 92 and the distance at this elite level will bother her when attempting to close from behind in the stretch.
PP #10 – ZIPPY DA DO DA – CITY ZIP x ONE FOR ALL x NORTHERN BABY (sloma) 13/1
This lightly raced 4yo mare has only had twelve starts but has good form leading into her toughest assignment to date. She started the year with a five and a half length allowance win at 13f and followed it up with a 2nd in the Bored Dancer Handicap last time out in 3140. The big query for me is her ability to match it with the 100 + SP runners. She has been more than capable up to this point but is partnered by A Thompson this week who has a 6% winning ratio and is not a regular in the money rider. Has had a good progression through her career to date however I believe the class factor and her deep closing style may not be able to mix it with the top three this week.
PP #11 – MOCKINGBIRD – ATTICUS x KINGMAMBO x SEATTLE DANCER (aaluvial) 13/1
Massive positive is young gun jockey D Silver aboard who is riding 21.1% winners so far this year. This 5yo mare has had a great career winning the G1 DUR AJC Oaks as a 3yo and adding another five listed stakes up until now with her most recent win, a five length victory in 3119 in the 16f Round Well Stakes. She backed up in the Roan Around Savage Stakes at 14f in 3147 and was flogged in a field of four, finishing 3rd some fourteen lengths off the leader. She is a genuine deep closer that gets a long way back and rattles home however she has so far shown that she does not have the raw speed that some of the others have and this could find her out this week. Prefer others.
PP #12 – GRASSY SMELTZER – DYNAFORMER x ROMANOV(IRE) x IRISH RIVER(FR) (godmama) 6/1
Back to back graded winner as a 3yo filly about nine months ago and coming off a win last time out in the Nappy Dugout Special Stakes going 10.5f in 3147. Since grade wins has been placed in listed stakes three times including a 3rd of four at 16f running a SP of 87 but will be put to the test this week having only run over 11f one other time when 6th in the G1 Pensacola Oaks at 12f. Would be vary wary of chances if she had not won last race and see her as a place chance at absolute best as I do not think she will get the 14f in slick enough time. Breeding suggest she might just get it and with Y Paligaro aboard who has fifteen years experience and a 13% win ratio, she is a definite chance this week.
This is going to be interesting. Suggested bets are:
Box trifecta – Barb’s Return, Magical Mia, Getaloadofthis are my top three chances and I will add Laphroaig and Otto Platinum as I think they are genuine chances.
Also will be having some each way on Otto Platinum as she is great value.
