G3 Fort Lauderdale Cap Review

The ninth running of the G3 Fort Lauderdale Cap has been run and won with the winner paying a very healthy $12.10. A return to form from 5yo New Strom saw him rattle home from fourteen lengths down in last position to close late and win by almost two lengths. Although the winning time of 1:421/5 was almost a second outside the race record set last year, trainer coolerk must be wrapped with a very impressive performance. After a disappointing finish to last year and a 4th in his debut performance this year, it looked as if New Storm had left his best racing days behind. However a nine week break has done the trick and New Storm looks as if he will be very competitive in better races than this.

Second placed Highest Raider also rattled home from the deep and looked as if he needed the run after a twelve week lay-off. After racing in allowance company and owner restricted stakes, he has shown that he can be more than competitive at the graded level. Paying $8.30 for 2nd, the exacta paid $68.90 and he has proved he is up to this level and looks as if he will have a solid 5yo career ahead.

It was a tale of the deep closers as 3rd place was secured by Desert Star who followed New Storm and Highest Raider through the pack to relegate the three leaders to 4th, 5th and 6th. Coming off a listed stakes win last time out, Desert Star was beaten just over two lengths and paid $7.10 for third taking the trifecta to $617.60. Desert Star is a good honest runner and should provide trainer super2 with more success in his next couple of runs.
