8 fillies and mares to battle for the G1 Cedora D trophy!
Today we have 8 fillies battling it out for the most prestigious turf race in America for Fillies and Mares. The field may be small, but they have come from all parts of the globe to contest this amazing race!
Let’s take a look at our 8 fillies and mares:
PP1
Brass Purse
Owner: kaif
Breeding: Dixieland Band x Broadway Harry x Full Pocket
Odds: 17/1
Jockey: T Popo 6%
Brass Purse is out of the sire Dixieland Band with earnings just a little over $66k in 20 lifetime starts. Brass Purse has primarily found a liking to the dirt in her career. In her only 2 starts on the turf early in her career, she didn’t fare too well.
With Brass Purse, your always going to get an honest effort. However, this is a considerable class rise this weekend, and the dislike for the turf, is likely to work against her. Greg, must be reaching for the stars with this entry, hope he finds oneJ
PP2
Redwood Screwball
Owner: supertoy07
Breeding: Red Ransom x Woodman x Nureyev
Odds: 8/1
Jockey: F Alford 8%
Redwood Screwball is out of the world class sire Red Ransom. This beautiful 3yo filly is owned by the always dangerous trainer supertoy. Redwood Screwball has earned $326k in her 15 lifetime starts. She has 4 stakes wins to her name, however none in graded company. She does have some excellent placing’s in graded company in her last 4 or 5 starts.
The key for Red Screwball, is to not run so “screwy” this week, meaning stay closer to the pace. The 9.5 furlongs is right in her wheelhouse, so I expect her to be prominent in the stretch drive. Earlier in the year, I thought she might be a lock to the win the Oaks de English, but she’s proven to want shorter.
PP3
Giddyup Diddie
Owner: deelynette
Breeding: With Approval x Lure x Greinton(GB)
Odds: 5/1
Jockey: N Lewis 12%
Wow, I absolutely love this name, very catchy nameJ Giddyup Diddie is out of With Approval with lifetime earnings of $315k and 6 lifetime stakes wins. Giddyup Diddie has fared much better in her career in restricted stakes, rather than Graded stakes. That could be her possible undoing this weekend.
Giddyup Diddie is going to relax in the back of the field, and try to make one substained run to the wire. How fast that run is going to be is the unknown, if it’s like the last two, then she’s got no shot. However, if it’s like her previous 3, then she’s got all the chance in the world. Let’s hope for the latter.
PP4
Noverre Alla Cozza(IRE)
Owner: corzak
Breeding: Noverre(IRE) x Cozzene x Damister
Odds: 10/1
Jockey: P Williams 8%
Noverre Alla Cozza(IRE) is out of the very nice racehorse Noverre(IRE), with earnings of $285k. She has found her own little niche in the SIM world racing primarily in starter and restricted stakes company over the past year. She was an excellent claim for $5,000, and has been brought along very nicely.
Noverre Alla Cozza(IRE) seems to like this distance that they’ll be trying this week. The tough part to get over, is her performances in graded company haven’t been very spectacular to this point. I would imagine she’ll be close to a fairly paceless race, which she will benefit from. Possibility to hit the board.
PP5
Turning Japanese
Owner: dkyoung7
Breeding: Sunday Silence x Lyphard x Vaguely Noble
Odds: 2/1
Jockey: D Anderson 9%
This is the one they’ve all came out to watch this week. Turning Japanese is the reigning BB Turf Distaff Champion, and she’s out to prove her winning ways this weekend. Turning Japanese is sired by the late/great Sunday Silence with earnings of $2.5 million in her illustrious career. Turning Japanese was all the rage from the middle to end of last year winning 7 in a row, even taking on the boys in the Japan Classic and the Pennsylvania Marathon were she finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Her last race was a head-scratcher, why the surface change at this point in her career? Maybe, he was trying to wake her up, however she was coming off a Grade I win in prior start on the turf, so not sure. She’s an absolute monster when she winds up her kick. It’s almost like she’s shot off by a rocket when she makes her stretch drive. The one they will all be watching when they turn for home!
PP6
Arc Over Danzig
Owner: whirlaway
Breeding: Danzig x Seattle Slew x Marcellini
Odds: 5/1
Jockey: T Smaron 8%
Arc Over Danzig is out of the deceased world class sire Danzig. Arc Over Danzig has career earnings of $617k with 4 stakes wins. She has struggled a bit since she turned 4, but the back class is there and this filly must always be respected and watched like a hawk. Arc over Danzig should be on or around the lead with this race not having a ton of speed.
PP7
Wedding March
Owner: seacadet
Breeding: Rahy x Nureyev x Roberto
Odds: 6/1
Jockey: S Johnson 8%
Wedding March is a beautifully bred daughter of Rahy. She has lived up to her super breeding with 2 stakes wins and 7 total wins out of 26 starts for trainer seacadet. She is another who will want to sit off the pace, but may find herself a little closer than normal with the lack of major speed. She comes in here off a gutty allowance score in Florida over 12 foes, and hopes to continue her success against this much smaller, albeit much more talented field.

PP8
Jaw Dropper
Owner: kyclocker3
Breeding: Kingmambo x Theatrical(IRE) x Blushing Groom(FR)
Odds: 7/2
Jockey: P Munoz 21%
Rounding out our field is Kyclocker3’s very talented Kingmambo filly named Jaw Dropper. Jaw Dropper had a rough go of it in her last 2 races, although the last was a switch to dirt. That may have been in response to her disappointing run in the Rich and Famous Handicap out in California, a race that our favorite Turning Japanese was the winner in.
Jaw Dropper was a 3 time G1 winner last year in her sophomore campaign, but has yet to reach the winner’s circle this season. Much like Arc of Danzig, she seems to of lost a step or two as she turned 4, but is still deadly and is more than capable of taking this race.
The picks!
I am only going to pick 2 horses because of the short field. I’m going chalk, chalk and more chalk! Turning Japanese for the win, with Jaw Dropper taking home the place money.
Good luck to all entrants and I hope everybody enjoys our wonderful day of racing in Illinois today!
