Juvenile Filly features finest freshman females on dirt
Kentucky (KY) Saturday, October 31, 2015 — 2:30 PM EST | Race ID : 1415241
.
BREEDERS’ BOWL JUVENILE FILLY
.
Grade I / Group 1 – Purse : $1,500,000 – 2 Year Old Fillies
8.5 Furlongs | ~1700 Meters | One Mile and One Sixteenths Fast Dirt
.
.
For the first time in Breeders’ Bowl history, Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, will host this year’s series of championship races, culminating with the Breeders’ Bowl Classic. To get the second day of racing off to a roaring start we present the G1 Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Filly. A full field of fourteen freshman fillies will skirmish over 8.5 furlongs (or ~1700 meters for those metrically inclined) for the winning share of the $1,500,000 purse and lay claim to the end of year awards. Ten of the fourteen are Kentucky breds, so the hometown breeders have a very strong hand in this event.
.
There are four reigning G1 champions in this group, headed by the lone millionaire and division leader, Swapsco Kitty. Her owner/trainer, nycowboy told me during a backstretch chat, ” It is an excellent group of fillies, I hope to have the best filly in the field and be the winner of this year’s BB Juvy Filly.” I’m sure everyone in the field shares the same sentiment. Who will add their name to the list of winners (see end of article) of this event ? Let’s take a closer look at the runners, and also get some of the owner/trainer perspectives from the “interviews” we were able to conduct.
.
I’m going to depart from my usual “in post position order” review of the runners; here goes in some kind of order.
.
.
.
SWAPSCO KITTY KY vegasbuzz J Drozd pp 2 3/1
.
To get this off on the right foot I thought starting with the number one ranked freshman dirt filly would be a no brainer, so …
.
We got a chance to sit and chat with Kitty’s owner/trainer, vegasbuzz (master stable nycowboy) as he was relaxing outside his barn, with all the heavy work completed. “Back in March, I had a DS share of Saint Ballado and I desired to scratch breed a good horse. I’ve been doing good with SB. Doing some research I saw Scat Daddy available at a good price and combine them with Broad Brush as DDS … a good blood line in real life and on the Sim as well. A great filly was born on the Sim, Swapsco Kitty, winner of two G1 and a G2. I can’t help it, but every time I watch Swapsco Kitty running I think on I Won’t Look Back. Her name is a combination of Island Kitty and Miss Swapsco from her own pedigree. “
.
Bay filly took her 2nd straight G1 event last time out, wearing down the leader to get up at this route in the Walnut Tree Stakes, notching a 99 SP# moving from mid-pack. She ran a very similar race one back of that, triumphing in the G1 Dell Computer Debutante at 7 panels, nabbing a 96 SP#. She settled for 2nd best in her previous start, the G3 Trixy Delight’s Special at a mile, nailing a 100 SP# with what’s become her customary trip. Top ranked filly faces some new shooters here as well as Arc Weld, who she narrowly bested last out; should be prominent in the lane, the one to beat.
.
.
DAMASQUERADE KY awkwardandchai4 J Kiesler pp 6 12/1
.
Next let’s try a “feel good” story, no brainer or not.
.
We caught up with new trainer awkwardandchai4 during morning workouts on the backstretch. and got his thoughts on the race and Derby Fever. ” I’ve only been playing the game for ten months and I am lucky enough to have a horse make it to the Breeder’s Bowl. When I bred her, I wanted to try Creative Cause, because he was one of my selections in the Kentucky Derby a couple of years ago. I used Spectacular Bid because he’s Spectacular Bid and I was so excited his DS share was only 98 credits. I spent half a day searching for a DDS I liked and when I came across Indian Charlie, I was stoked. My filly is fast and has never been headed the first 4 furlongs of all of her races. I stepped up to Grade I because I thought she’d get an easy lead going 8.5F and might be able to sustain her front-run, which she did to my delight.” Nicely done awkwardandchai.
.
Light grey speedster wired the G1 The Darley at this trip over this strip, snaring a 93 SP# in major prep for this spot. In her previous outing she held 3rd at 6 panels in the Dublin Lass listed stakes after setting all the pace, snagging an 86 SP#. One before that she led for three calls before tiring to 6th in the G2 Hoserhead Juvenile Fillies at 6.5 panels, scoring an 82 SP#. Should be forwardly placed if not leading early, horse for the course could go on with it.
.
.
SOPHIA LOREN KY twinoaks D Givins pp 4 13/1
.
BILLIE HOLIDAY ENG bunsay T Small pp 3 11/1
.
PLAGE DE TAHITI KY super24 F Gossett pp 8 9/1
.
Third up, it only seemed natural to take a closer look at the three horse entry from three different trainers from the triple threat super racing operation.
.
Saddling A Breeders’ Bowl starter would be a great thrilll for many, but sending three ? in the same race ???. Wow, somebody is doing something right. We got Jeff (whirlwind) to share a “bit” with us when we just happened to stop by the barn with a cooler of cold ones. Said Jeff: ” I don’t know that I have a great deal of insight here, all 3 fillies … are improving racehorses and appear to be maturing and getting better at the right time. We have won this race in the past with Lindy Hop in 2010 and over the years have proven we know how to get horses to the big dance. Breeders Bowl day has always been weird for us, plenty of runners every year and 6 or 7 wins over the years, which is pretty lucky considering, but for some reason horses I thought were mortal locks, SUPER GOLD, RHIBUS, CARNIVAL OF LOVE, NO APAGUES LA LUZ, BANNER, and LATTITUDE to name a few, just missed on BB Day.
.
The race actually sets up pretty well for our group. Sophia & Billie should sit just off the pace early and Billie will start her move after 4 furlongs and Sophia will be advancing at 5 panels and if Plage is within 3 lengths of the leader at the 1/4 pole, watch out, she will be flying in the lane home.
.
All three are pretty nicely bred, both BH & PDT are out of stakes winning mares and Sophia Loren’s dam’s dam was Lana Turner, who missed winning the Triple Tiara by less than two lengths.
.
I guess we will see what we’ll see but I do think we have a pretty good hand going in to the race and it would be pretty cool to see the flaming skull & crossbones silks in the winner’s circle. This will be the 11th consecutive year that super will have multiple runners on the Breeders’ Bowl card and we have had great success with the various juvenile races. Our little group has always been about juvenile and spring classics racing, so for us, this is when it really starts to get interesting .”
.
Thanks, Jeff. By the way the other two members of super are topicount and afc.
.
SOPHIA LOREN
.
Came on well for 2nd to Damasquerade in the G1 The Darley at this route over this oval in most recent try, busting a 90 SP# in her very first grade/group effort. Ghostzapper gal, out of the sim-mare Ava Gardner (by Bernardini x Street Cry) won a NW2L allowance one back of that, clocking an 83 SP# in a pace pressing run. Bay beauty got nailed on the line when 2nd in a NW2L allowance in previous out, catching an 82 SP# over this racing strip. Twinoaks trainee is on the improve, twice 2nd on this oval; part of the three horse super1 entry. contender.
.
BILLIE HOLIDAY
.
Close 3rd last out in the G1 Frickazee Stakes at a mile behind Redd Rocks and stablemate Plage De Tahiti, knocking down a 90 SP# from just off the early leaders. Dubawi dame, out of the G2 winning sim-mare Lena Horne (by Bernardini x Storm Cat), was an OK 5th one back of that in the G3 The Chicago DC Lassie behind A Prize She Makes at 8 furlongs, grabbing a 91 SP# in a mid-pack run. In her prior start she backed up to 10th in the G2 Hoserhead Juvenile Filly in her first grade/group try, posting a 78 SP#. Gets an extra sixteenth here and lots of early lick to chase, can be right there for trainer bunsay.
.
PLAGE DE TAHITI
.
Majestic Warrior miss, out of the stakes winning sim-mare White Sand (by Storm Cat x Unbridled) flew home for a close 2nd last time over in the G1 Frickazee Stakes at a mile behind Redd Rocks, banking a 91 SP#. One back of that, this bay filly won the Hallflys Gulch listed stakes at 7 panels, bagging a 92 SP# moving from ninth of ten. In her prior start she ran of ground in the G3 The Schoolerville at 6 furlongs, pasting an 82 SP# from the far outside barrier. She won two of her first three starts in sprints over this oval, and should find the distance to her liking; third of the super group entry from trainer super 24 can get the job done.
.
.
HOW’D THAT HAPPEN KY jarrod3 C Orza pp 14 14/1
.
After finishing with whirlwind we were lucky to catch jarrod3 (master stable corza) on his way to wherever he was going, and he quickly gave us the scoop on his filly.
.
“How’d That Happen was bred after watching late night UK racing & noticing the early two year old races were dominated by the sire Kodiac. I bred her with the intention of getting an early two year old on the turf, got the early bit right. Probably a bit out of her depth here & better suited to shorter races. But you gotta be in it to win it. ” Indeed !
.
Chestnut filly tired badly last out to 12th in the G1 Frickazee Stakes at a mile behind some in here, getting a 77 SP# while involved early. She may have bounced off a big effort one back of that when 3rd in the G1 Getaway Stakes at 7 panels behind The Joy Never Ends, garnering a 91 SP# while setting all the pace. Kodiac kid, out of the sim-mare Blushing Niner (by Forty Niner x Blushing John) was the winner of the G2 Stoker Handicap at 6.5 furlongs in her prior run, grabbing a 93 SP# in a pace pressing performance. Should be involved in the early pace struggle, but jarrod3 trainee may find it tough holding on late.
.
.
A PRIZE SHE MAKES KY hellholt D Wilson pp 7 16/1
.
Another relatively new player with his first Breeders’ Bowl entry is hellholt (master stable zia ), trainer of A Prize She Makes. We ran into him and some of his family at a local watering hole, and as you can imagine, the zia family members were surely enjoying the lead up to the weekend. The background noise has rendered my recorder useless, so I hope I get this right.
.
Zia: ” I have only been playing the sim since Dec 2013. As for my filly she is my first and only graded winner and coincidentally is also the first graded winner for her sire Pure Prize. A Prize She Makes barely edged out Ryan’s ( lenny ) excellent filly Bronzegate in that G3 victory in Sep and I’ve been sweating bullets ever since waiting to see if she makes the final cut. If she makes into the race it would, of course, be my first BB appearance. She could give the favorites some trouble late in race as she does possess a hard late kick.
.
On a side note I get to enjoy this game with many friends and family who have taken a big interest in the sim in the last two years. My family has always come from a rail bird background so the sim was a fantasy come true for myself and my father (who also has his first BB entry in the Turf Classic named Chaps Groom), my uncle (fishstix), girlfriend of six years (psalms), and also my good friend Daniel (3dddz). I hail from Albuquerque NM and (we) have formed a little New Mexico crew and we all enjoy the sim tremendously.”
.
Thanks to the zia family for the great time we had during the “interview”.
.
Bay babe made her grade/group stakes debut a winning one last out in the G3 The Chicago DC Lassie at a mile, flying down the straight from last of fourteen to get up late, cashing a 94 SP#. Scratch bred Pure Prize papoose (by Broad Brush x Raise A Native}, ran out of ground one back of that when 3rd at 6.5 furlongs in tne Friendly Mary listed stakes over this strip, casting an 82 SP# with another from the clouds performance. In her previous start she got up late to win a NW1x allowance at 6.5 panels, earning a 71 SP#. Only try over this oval was OK, will need to work out a smooth trip facing faster, will probably be that blur you see coming for home.
.
.
CAJUN CUSTOM LA zzombie N Lawton pp 10 11/1
.
We employed the “full cooler” ploy again and it worked like a charm, as we got a long time Sim-player to share the back story of his filly with us.
.
” Hi ric480. I’ve been around the SIM a long time. I’m actually qwikvett. The stables under zzombie were stables I had my son run back in the day but he’s out of the game so I run them now.
.
I was looking for new blood to fill these empty stables and ran across this filly in a 25k claimer. I liked the SP she put up in her 2nd start. I thought it was really good for that early in the year. I saw she was put in a stakes against the boys and while she didn’t place well she ran a faster SP. I couldn’t understand why she was put in any claimer so I put in my bid and won what was I think a 16 way shake. I immediately put her in a grade 2 with other fillies and she ran big. Her next race out I decided against going to a Grade I Sprint and entered her in another Grade 2. I have experience with prepping for BB races so I was looking for points. She ran pretty evenly but I was ok with it. My next move had to be a route race in a Grade I and I timed it so I had a choice of prep races. I went with the Walnut Tree and she ran a huge 2nd to guarantee a spot in the BB.
.
She’s won 3 lifetime, but hasn’t won for me yet. Of course I expect big odds again, and I’m hoping her first win for me will be the big one. If she can make the lead, look out.”
.
Thanks quikvett. The full cooler move works again – go figure.
.
$25,000 claim four back winds up in the Breeders’ Bowl. Bay Custom For Carlos chick, out of the sim-mare Wavy (by Curlin x Broad Brush) was an excellent 3rd last out behind Swapsco Kitty and Arc Weld in the G1 Walnut Tree, garnering a 97 SP# setting all the pace, beaten less than 2L. One back of that she was an even 5th at 6.5 furlongs in the G2 The Iron Deck, grabbing an 83 SP#. In her previous outing she settled for 2nd after getting the lead late in the G2 Lean Machine Stakes first off the claim, gaining an 86 SP# in a pace pressing run. Runner from the zzombie racing barn should be part of the early pace tussle; further improvement could put her right there at the finish, providing for a wonderful rags to riches story.
.
.
Unluckily, I was unable to track down the trainers of the rest of the field. Here they are without the embellishments. Still have a full cooler here – what to do, what to do ?
.
.
REDD ROCKS KY mrxrayz7 T Ace pp 1 11/1
.
One half of the mrxrayz uncoupled entry is this bay Curlin cutie, out of the sim-mare Alyredhead (by Red Ransom x Alysheba), who triumphed in the G1 Frickazee Stakes at a mile last time over, nailing a 91 SP# in a pace pressing performance. In her next outing she stalked in 3rd before tiring late for 6th behind others in here in the G1 Getaway Stakes at 7 panels, notching an 89 SP#. One back of that she ran a similar race when also 6th in the G3 Dr Shut Yer Lips lat 7.5 furlongs, nabbing an 87 SP#. She’s won 2 of 3 over this oval, SP#’s steadily on the improve; contender.
.
.
ARC WELD KY mrxrayz23 N Bonus pp 12 6/1
.
The other half of the mrxrayz entry was a bang-up 2nd to Swapsco Kitty in the G1 Walnut Tree Stakes at this route in latest, snatching a 98 SP# from the middle of the pack. Bay Arch honey, out of the sim-mare Enough Till Storm (by Seattle Slew x Storm Cat) won the G3 The Sargento at 6.5 furlongs one before that, snaring a 90 S# from just off the pace. She closed well for 4th in one prior in the G3 Butterfly Futurity at 6 panels, scoring an 82 SP#. Won her first two starts in sprints over this oval, was right with the top choice last out; retains her good form, solid contender.
.
.
CAPE ROAD KY yesguy W Desantis pp 9 16/1
.
Owner/trainer yesguy sends out this Cape Blanco babe, out of the stakes winning sim-mare Quality Cat (by Quality Road x Storm Cat) off an impressive triumph in the G2 Camlaw Stakes at this distance in her first try on the dirt, grasping an 88 SP# from just off the pace. Bay filly was an uninspired 9th all the way around the track in one prior, the G2 The Lowdown at 6 panels on the green, grabbing a 78 SP#. In her prior start she was next to last in the G2 The Young Lady at 7 furlongs, falling back after showing a little early interest. Improving sort may have found her place on the dirt but faces some tough customers here; chance for a minor share.
.
.
THE JOY NEVER ENDS KY grandalley A Rolling pp 13 10/1
.
Kitten’s Joy kitty, out of the graded placed sim-mare Oil On Top (by Unbridled’s Song x A.P. Indy), took down the G1 Getaway Stakes at 7 furlongs in latest, popping a 94 SP# from well off the pace. Light grey filly was a gaining 4th in one prior in the Dr Shut Yer Lips at 7.5 panels, pegging an 89 SP# from in a mid-pack trip. One back of that she won the Rich Bag listed stakes at 6.5 furlongs, posting an 85 SP# in a stretch running performance. Grandalley trainee didn’t handle this surface well last time over it; late runner should be prominent in the stretch drive, could get there on top try.
.
.
DESTINY WINGS KY silversun9b B Oston pp 5 10/1
.
Scratch bred daughter of Distorted Humor (by A. P. Indy x Broad Brush) gained some valuable experience last outing when a good 3rd in the G1 The Darley at this trip over this strip behind Damasquerade and Sophia Loren, zipping an 88 SP# in her initial stakes appearance. Bay filly wired a NW2L allowance at a mile in her previous start, flashing an 85 SP#. She lasted for 2nd in prior run in a NW2L allowance at 7 panels, flipping an 82 SP# after battling for the lead. Runner from the silversun9b racing operation should find herself in thick of it early, but can she improve enough to contend with the top ones in this heat ?
.
.
KICKING QUEEN ENG fifatees T Tees pp 11 17/1
.
Rounding out the field is this Kingman kitty out of the sim-mare Injection (by Kingmambo x Seattle Slew), who came on late to be a close 2nd in the G2 Canlaw Stakes at this route, nailing an 87 SP# from back in the pack. Bay miss won a local bred allowance at a mile one before that, notching a 79 SP# in a four horse affair. She broke her maiden in her previous outing, nabbing a 75 SP# from off the pace. Fifatees trainee seems a bit light in SP#’s and experience when compared to the rest of these, but can pick up a minor award with further improvement.
.
.
.
Two year olds are always full of surprises at this time of year. In what looks to be a very competitive affair, a case can be made for many of the entries. A number of front runners should make for a rapid pace, which the late runners are looking and hoping for. Who is ready to run their best race ? Who will surprise, who will, unfortunately, disappoint ? Those are some of the questions. It’s time to bring out the dartboard (with which I’ve had more luck with my selections of late). This is what my throws revealed:
