Colts Compete for the Jimcrack

On Sunday at the Surrey track, the two-year-olds take up the challenge of the Grade/Group Two The Jimcrack, which is to be run over six furlongs on the turf.  The going is firm and there are thirteen colts declared for this $375,000 contest.

This colt has run all except his first and third races in locally-bred company.  He won his Maiden Special Weight race two races ago over today’s distance, then finished third in an Allowance race for non-winners of three last time out, recording his best speed figure to date of 77.  He takes a big step up into Grade Two company here.  His dam was a Stakes winner and placed at Graded level.

loobylu                       V Hartsfield                242142117   7/1

He has had plenty of racing experience for a two-year-old, winning three of his nine races to date.  Last time out, he made the step into Grade Two company and finished a respectable seventh of fourteen, beaten just three and three-quarter lengths over today’s distance.  Previously, he put up a speed figure of 86, his best to date, to win an Allowance race for non-winners of three.  Before that, he won an Allowance NW1x race for locally-bred horses.

The outsider in the market, this colt won his Maiden Special Weight at the fourth time of asking in his start before last, in a race for locally-bred horses over the minimum distance.  He followed this up with another win last time out in an Allowance NW1x race, in which he put up a speed figure of 68, which is his best to date.

4          DARKEND VEST (LA)          2 b c                INTERACTIF x JOHANN QUATZ (FR) x HIGH TOP

Another who is little favoured by the betting public here, perhaps on account of his unfashionable sire, this lightly-raced colt has shown some decent form to win two of his three races to date.  After winning his Maiden Special Weight race over five and a half furlongs two races ago, he followed up by winning an Allowance NW1x race over the same distance, in which he recorded his best speed figure to date of 71.

This nicely-bred colt has won two of his five races to date, beginning with his Maiden Special Weight race on his racecourse debut.  After finishing a length down in second in an Allowance race for non-winners of two next time out, he stepped up to Stakes level, where he won over five furlongs.  Next he progressed to a Grade Three race over today’s distance of six furlongs, in which he finished second, recording his best speed figure of 82.  Last time out, he finished fourth, beaten three and a half lengths, in a Grade Two race over the same distance.  Expect him to be held up early.

This is another lightly-raced colt, having run only twice, in May and July.  He was somewhat disappointing on his debut, finishing only ninth of thirteen, beaten four and a quarter lengths.  However, last time out he made all the running to win by one and a quarter lengths over six and a half furlongs on yielding turf, recording a much improved speed figure of 83.  He goes straight from Maiden to Graded company here.  His dam was placed at Graded level.

7          GOLD FIXING (ENG)                        2 b c    KYLLACHY (GB) x KHELEYF x REFUSE TO BEND (IRE)

He has won four of his seven races to date, including his Maiden Special Weight on his debut and an Allowance race for non-winners of two the next time out.  Last time out, he won the Grade Three The Cyborg by one and a half lengths, recording his best speed figure to date of 89.  Previously, he finished second, beaten a quarter of a length, in the Grade Two The Coventry Steaks.  All his races have been over six furlongs and he always runs on from behind at the finish.

8          DARK CANYON BAND (KY)            2 br c  POINT GIVEN x PULPIT x DIXIELAND BAND

deeprock45               J Stivers          54212                        19/1

This colt won his Maiden Special Weight race at the fourth time of asking, putting up a speed figure of 73 over today’s distance.  In his next race, last time out, he recorded the same speed figure to finish second, beaten three quarters of a length, in an Allowance NW1x race over five furlongs.  His dam was placed at Stakes level.

9          DEADLY VENOMS (IRE)      2 b c    SCAT DADDY x SPEIGHTSTOWN x MORE THAN READY

buffy6                                    M Kiprusoff               21       6/1

This colt has run only in two Maiden Special Weight races.  In the first one, which was over five and a half furlongs, he finished second, beaten a quarter of a length.  Next time out, he recorded a speed figure of 83 to win by a length over today’s distance of six furlongs.

This colt has run just the once before now, making it a winning debut.  He recorded a speed figure of 80 and is likely to improve on that.  This is a nicely-bred colt who takes a big step up in class here.

11       MY NEXT MISTAKE (KY)    2 b c    ELUSIVE QUALITY x DANEHILL DANCER x STORM CAT

boble13                      H Harzheim                511     8/1

Having finished fifth on his debut on the dirt, beaten five lengths, this colt was switched to turf and immediately won his Maiden Special Weight race by two and a quarter lengths.  He followed up by winning an Allowance race for non-winners of two over the same distance of seven furlongs, recording a speed figure of 80.  He takes a big step up in class here, but looks to be an improving sort.  His dam was a Grade Two winner.

12       DESIGNS ON VEGA (IRE)    2 b c    LOPE DE VEGA (IRE) x GREEN DESERT x BROAD BRUSH

bezza14                      K Ledwith                  153132          5/1

This colt has won two of his six races to date, including his Maiden Special Weight on his debut.  Last time out, he finished a creditable second, beaten one and a quarter lengths, in a Stakes race over six and a half furlongs, putting up a speed figure of 83.  He recorded his best speed figure of 84 in his previous race, when he finished third, beaten one and three quarter lengths, in an unrestricted Allowance race over seven furlongs.

He gained his first victory last time out, at the fifth time of asking, in an Allowance race for locally-bred non-winners of a race in the past nine months.  Having begun his career on the dirt, he raced once on turf before returning to the dirt for his win, for which he recorded a speed figure of 74.  It will be interesting to see how he fares on his return to the lawn in this higher class of race, as on the evidence of his races to date it appears to be his less favoured surface.
