Big Race Recaps 3007

We had a few surprises this week and a couple of the favorites took care of business with nice preps for potential Breeder’s Bowl runs.

Race: 3007.2815 Canada Turf – Grade I – $1,000,000
Track:
Ontario
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one half on the Turf

For those that read last week’s preview you might have saw these lines I wrote..

“I dug deep but 22/1 Kiss of Betrayl (IRE) looks like a true sleeper pick. She is a three year old filly not only taking on older runners but taking on older boys.”

Guess what? That freakin Filly WON!!!  That is right folks a three year old filly beat older male rivals at a mile and a half on the turf. She did it in true turf champion style, coming from way off the pace. She was more than twelve lengths off the early pace She was full of run around the turn for home and made the men look like boys in the stretch. She powered by her male rivals to win by an impressive three and a quarter lengths. All I can say is WOW!!

Swingshift Sal stalked the early pace in fifth. He seemed well positioned in this one. He is always consistent and when he was chasing down the front runner in the stretch it looked like it might be his day but he had nothing left in the tank when the filly charged past. He was almost two lengths better than third and fourth place finishers Stronghold and Freeze (NZ).

Race: 3007.0414 Jockey Guild Gold Cup – Grade I – $1,000,000
Track:
New York
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one quarter on the Dirt

The six year old Sensatious dominated his rivals heading into the Breeder’s Bowl in excellent form. You have to love chalking one up for the old timer. He sat chilly behind the pace setting Wonderboy Cougar (IRE). Sensatious eased up to Wonderboy Cougar (IRE) on his own and by the time they entered they stretch the top were clear by more than four lengths over the rest of the field.

Sensatious just pulled away from there disposing of Wonderboy Cougar (IRE) at the top of the stretch. He finished powerfully drawing away to a three and a quarter length win. Wonderboy Cougar (IRE) gave another honest effort. He set the pace here and ran an improved race but was just not up to the challenge of the winner. Wonderboy Cougar (IRE) is still winless this year but has shown no sign that he cannot win the big race in a few weeks.

High Otto finished up well to finish third. He stalked from fourth in the early stages and did manage to make up a little ground on the winner but he was too far behind in the early stages to be a threat. Tell Me When To Go was a big long shot at 21/1. He stalked in third early and nearly lasted for third. He had to settle for fourth in a nice bid by the long shot.

Race: 3007.3316 Breeders’ Bowl Mile Prep – Grade I – $500,000
Track:
Ascot
Restrictions: All horses, 4 years old and up
Distance: One mile on the Turf

Thirteenth Date took it to her male rivals this weekend. In a prep for a run against the best milers in the sim Thirteenth Date not only proved she belonged but showed she is a serious contender. Today she was towards the back early more than nine lengths off of a pretty hot early pace. She closed with reckless abandon around the turn for home and through the stretch to win by a comfortable two and a quarter lengths.

31/1 Danzig’s Buda stalked the fast pace before taking a short lead at the top of the stretch. He was stubborn on the lead but lost the lead in deep stretch to the fast closing winner. He tried to battle off two other late closers. Echoes closed from dead last in the early going. He made up a ton of ground through the stretch nailing Danzig’s Buda on the wire for the place. Danzig’s Buda won a photo for third over another fast closer Kyogle Tiger.

Race: 3007.0314 Three Smokestacks Stakes – Grade I – $500,000
Track:
Kentucky
Restrictions: Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up
Distance: A mile and one eighth on the Dirt

K’s Joan Bach finally gets that elusive graded stakes win in impressive fashion. After a couple of just misses K’s Joan Bach still had something to prove. She was mid pack early but nine lengths off the early pace. Her jock quickly rushed her into contention after the first half mile so when she entered the stretch she was in fourth just three and half lengths off the leader. From there she found the next gear surging in the stretch swallowing up her rivals. She would draw off to win by two and a quarter lengths over Pleistocene Epoch.

Pleistocene Epoch ran well after stalking the early pace in fifth. She moved into contention around the turn for home and any other day she probably wins this race. She was prominent and moving well but had no answer for the winner. Ran Away was a 20/1 long shot from the Super Stables. She came from well off the early pace picking up the pieces in the stretch finishing just two and three quarter lengths behind the winner.

Race: 3007.0315 Scottsdale BB Stakes – Grade I – $500,000
Track:
Kentucky
Restrictions: All horses, 3 years old and up
Distance: Six furlongs on the Dirt

A couple of long shots battled down the stretch and only a nose separated them at the wire. Fly’s Motivator (IRE) was in a good stalking position early in fifth position three length off the pace. Ab Fab was behind Fly’s Motivator (IRE) in those early stages but not far off of him. As the runners entered the stretch it was apparent the pace setter and favorite Gathering Momentum was not on top of his game.

Fly’s Motivator (IRE) had moved right to Gathering Momentum at the top of the stretch with Ab Fab on their heels. As they entered the stretch Gathering Momentum faded and Ab Fab kept gaining ground on Fly’s Motivator (IRE). With each stride the lead went from three quarters of a length to a half length Ab Fab kept coming. He ran out of real estate as Fly’s Motivator (IRE) out lasted him to the wire taking the win by a nose at 19/1. Ab Fab was second at 41/1. Scoobs Connection closed well from just behind the top two but could never get on even terms with them settling for third a length and a half back.
