The Bob’s Warning Special

This week’s feature race at New South Wales sees the 2yo fillies strutting their stuff on the main stage. 7 youngsters are lining up this week over the sprint journey of 6.5 furlongs on the grass, all trying to get that elusive stakes victory that will enhance their value at stud once they finish their racing.

As is often the case with the 2yo’s its an even field today with all girls having a legitimate claim for victory. Let’s have a closer look at the combatants.

1- FLYING MARG (AUS) (dowelly2) – Group winning filly that has had a very successful season to date, by the royally bred but underperforming (sim) sire Flying Spur out of Dowelly’s stakes placed mare Motoring Marg. Won a grade 3 early in the season over 5 furlongs on the lawn and has been consistent in stakes company since. However she looks to be the type of 2yo that runs early but fail to improve significantly as the year progresses. Her record suggests she will be in the mix but it is hard to see her taking the win on her current times.

2- UNDUE CAUSE (IRE) (vansheen) – Beautifully bred filly by Galileo out of a Peintre Celebre mare. Still fairly inexperienced with just the 2 runs under her belt braking her maiden first time out over 5 furlongs and then running a nice closing 3rd at her second start in stakes company over 6. Her numbers are improving and she should be doing her best work late in the stretch pushing for a place. I think she may be better suited over the longer journeys but she is a nice looking filly that should be taking home some prize money this weekend.

3- REAL MEAN RAIDER (raider5) – By far and away the best offspring of the regally bred mare Royal Harmony by the A.P Indy horse Golden Missile. She is coming off a hat trick of stakes wins all over sprint journeys on the grass and although she has had a fairly heavy racing schedule in her first season she has certainly not taken any ill effect from it, winning 5 races from the 7 she has started in. Her only real failure was in stakes company over the mile and once raider5 brought her back to sprinting she has been extremely impressive. She loves to sit on the pace and from about the 3 furlong mark likes to bowl along to the lead and apply the pressure to the chasing bunch. She looks the testing material for all the up and coming fillies here and it will take a big run to stop her collecting another stakes victory.

4- SEEKING RAINBOWS (IRE) (rfrankel) – Lovely looking filly by boom first year sire Dubawi out of a Lyphard mare. She is another relatively inexperienced filly only having her 4th race start today after hitting the board in her first 3. She shows plenty of pace in her races and should hold out Real Mean Raider for the lead. Ran a great race last time out in stakes company over 6 furlongs just getting pipped on the line after setting a cracking pace and good overall time. Looks to be a filly on the up and will likely look the winner at some stage down the stretch, the question is can she hold off Real Mean Raider and the other closing fillies in the push to the finish.

5- BOSCOS ROCCALEONE (boscoman) – Improving filly by Sonny Hines out of a Robbama mare going for a hat trick in her first attempt in stakes company. Struggled to break through for her maiden till she was dropped into a maiden claimer where she trailed the field early and came home with a slashing burst. Stepped up to allowance company at her next start and won impressively over 8 furlongs with a nice jump in her speed time and another solid drive through the stretch. Looks ideally suited over the longer journeys and may find a few of these a bit nippy sprinting but she will be working home well and may get a piece of the pie at good odds.

6- FOOTSTEPSONTHEROOF(GB) (zeco7) – First offspring out of the moderately performed mare Late Last Evening (IRE) by the well performed first year sire Footstepsinthesand (GB). Has been mixing her form a little in tough company but has managed a stakes win 3 starts back over 5.5 furlongs. Another speedy filly that will vie for the lead she has been disappointing in her last 2 runs fading in the second half of the race and regressing in times. Will have to turn her form around to feature here but she has bumped into a couple of smart fillies that will make it tough for her.

7- DOLPHIN D’INVERNE (IRE) (norrtelje) – Dubawi’s second representative in what is shaping as a great first year in the sires ranks this filly is a real blue blood in every sense being out of the magnificently bred mare Seattle D’Inverne. She is bred to be anything on the track and has plenty of potential after winning first time out over 6 furlongs on the grass. Big jump in grade here going straight from maiden company to stakes level and there are a few fillies in here that will test her thoroughly and have experience on their side. Led from start to finish in her maiden victory and it is likely she will fight for the lead again here with Seeking Rainbows and Real Mean Raider. Definitely has a shot at winning but it is a big ask in her second race day appearance and she will derive a lot of benefit from the experience.

Only a small field but plenty of quality with a few new girls on the block ready to make their presence felt. It should be a true run race with plenty of speed up front and all horses getting their chance. I like Real Mean Raider here, I think she will sit just behind the 2 speedsters Seeking Rainbows and Dolphin D’Inverne for the first half of the race then roll to the front and really apply the pressure down the stretch. Flying Marg should be the one to benefit most from all the early speed and she will be working into the race towards the back end and looks good for a place. Dolphin D’Inverne looks like a nice filly in the making and although it is her first attempt at stakes level I like her to hold on for third.

Good luck to all trainers.
