A Grand Critter In Ostend?

A Grand Critter In Ostend?

Ostend – Ostend‘s turf course will get plenty of action this week as the track plays host to three Grade III races, all for two year-olds and all at about the same distance – two at a mile and one at 7 1/2 furlongs.  Luckily, a damp summer has made for a long growing season and the course is in good shape.  In the Grade III, The Grand Critter, nine 2 YO’s will parade to the post for Saturday afternoon’s 15th race.  It should be a good one and here is a look at the field.

Post one will hold Rvd’s well made colt by Kingmambo.  Yours Is The Earth (9/1) won his very first start going away but has lately fallen on hard times.  He beat only two in The Rick’s Canoes two races back and left trainer Rvd scratching his head.  The colt was then sent out to try the dirt and that didn’t turn out as planned so now he is back on the grass and trying longer.  The verdict isn’t in on this one but he may find himself back in allowance races until he matures a bit if he doesn’t do well Saturday.

Blue Lion (11/1) will break from hole two and is a good looking colt by Lion Heart.  Trained by Tcity he is 3/4 in the money but has only a maiden win.  He has a closing style that sees this one getting better as the distances get longer and his speed figures are on the improve and that makes him one to watch.

Eurobuda (5/1) is one of the big question marks in this race.  His only win came on the dirt and his two stakes attempts were not something to write home about.  He is trying the grass for the first time and owner/trainer Vicki has to think that being by Eurosilver, he should improve on the lawn.

Kitten’s Joy will be represented by the Epic trainee, Grossman MVP (5/1).  One of only two fillies in this race, she won her only start, going wire to wire.  She was eased at the wire so we will have to assume she is fit and not looking for less distance.  The dark grey filly is mature for her age and even though she is being thrown to the wolves here, she might just have big teeth.

Dixieland Dancer (6/1) has a lot of experience for a 2 YO, having started seven times already.  Trained by Moonshines he broke his maiden on his third effort and then finished a good second in The Almost Not Kris.  The son of Danehill Dancer was then stepped up in class and finished a closing fourth in the Kyhorsemen Grade I Juvenile.  He finished fifth last time out in the Grade I, High Flyer.  Both of his last two races were at a mile so the distance won’t be a problem.  The slight drop in class might just get this colt his second career win.

Snappa3 will saddle Shy General (7/1) a lovely colt by General Nediym.  He has three wins under his belt, including The Woody Ash and The Putrid Launch.  This is a fast colt that has only been off the board once and has stake’s experience.  He looks to be ready for the class jump but distance, as with many in this race, remains a question.

Post seven will hold Gateaux De Boeuf (5/1) who is an own son of Shamardal.  He was an easy winner first time out and he followed that with a closing second in a six furlong allowance race.  Trainer Beefcake2 then asked him to move up the class ladder and although he posted a slight gain in deep stretch in The Grade III Omnipotent Juvenile, it wasn’t his finest effort.  As with others, the distance will be a question.

Morning line favorite Lightseeker (5/2) is the other filly in the race and is by North Light.  Conditioned by Lenny3, she has won two of three starts and has never been off the board.  In her first race she closed well and won going away.  A change in rider strategy saw her being sent to the front from the gate and she won going wire to wire.  Wheeled back into The More Glare, a Grade II at seven furlongs, Lenny3 requested that the jockey keep her close to the pace and she closed well to finish second.  She has the top speed figures in the race and can run from anywhere.  She will be tough.

On the outside is Prayer Flag (13/1) a son of Songandaprayer.  Tiznow is the trainer of record and he has one win from five starts.  This is a big class jump but this is a different colt from the one that ran early in his career.  Once the distances got longer, he came to life, winning his first start at a mile by almost five lengths.  He was a closing third last time out in The Tex Ransom, also at a mile.  He likes the distance and although he will need a big improvement in his speed figures he deserves a shot here and could surprise.

Good Luck to all.
