GIII to Be Decided on Quarterback Sneak?
Palms Outward Stakes
Grade III
Seven furlongs on Firm Turf
$150,000
Fillies, 2 years old
We are here at Ascot and the excitement is building as trainers are trying to make a final push towards the Breeders Bowl. We have a couple of fillies here with a legitimate stake and a couple more that are trying to work their way in. Lots on the line for these trainers so let’s take a look:
1 – RITES OF SPRING(IRE) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEED RANK 8/1 Super6 12.5% S.Kicker 9% 72.0 71.7 N/A
(DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) x KINGMAMBO x SIR IVOR) Since her maiden win four back, she has not finished higher than third in a couple of small field Stakes and an allowance. Her speeds have increased slightly but trainer Super6 has to be looking for a jump in improvement here. Last time she was on the inside post she sat behind the leader for the entire race. Hopefully Mr. Kicker will kick her into the lead at the end.
| 2 – EPIC DUEL | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7/2 | Australia | 13.5% | P.Harzheim | 24% | 83.9 | 80.3 | 10 |
(A.P. INDY x FUSAICHI PEGASUS x STORM CAT) A Graded veteran with four races and a GIII win, this filly out of RADAR LOVE looks like she is going to improve on well bred Momma’s record of only three wins. She ran a good race at this distance but faded at the end. Trainer Australia has the tracks best jockey in the saddle in Harzheim and that may help this youngster save on her energy so that she still has some kick at the end.
| 3 – EL CAJON(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3/1 | Dagrims | 11.3% | T.Foster | 5% | 85.4 | 80.2 | 105 |
(EL PRADO(IRE) x KRIS S. x BOLD RULER) A little bit of a worry with this young lady that she seems to like six furlongs better, her two best SPFs were at that distance. She likes to get out to or near the lead and this post may help that some. Trainer Dagrims liked her last outing where she won her first Stakes race. Foster will be holding the reins and he has been ice cold this campaign and needs a good ride. Hopefully he got the right horse this time.
| 4 – VY THE QUARTERBACK | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4/1 | Catahoula | 26.32% | M.Day | 21% | 81.2 | 79.4 | 41 |
(KITTEN’S JOY x SEATTLE SLEW x NIJINSKY II) A bit of a surprise here that trainer Catahoula has moved this filly back to seven furlongs after being so successful at a mile where she is the number three ranked filly. She is by far the top offspring of highly anticipated freshman sire KITTEN’S JOY as the only Graded winner and one of only three stakes winners. She has never finished off of the board and won a GI last time out so she is hard to pick against, especially with Day in the irons as he is excellent with these youngsters.
| 5 – HEAVEN AND EARTH(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5/1 | Elite3 | 10.5% | N.Lawton | 22% | 84.7 | 84.2 | 152 |
(PEINTRE CELEBRE (IRE) x SUNDAY SILENCE x MILL REEF) Lightly raced chestnut filly with only her maiden win and a second in the MOTHER LIVE Stakes last time out. She made a nice improvement but trainer Elite3 knows that she needs another big bump to compete at this level but the nicely bred filly definitely has a chance to do that. She has Lawton in the leather and he is probably the best at the track so that will help in that endeavour.
| 6 – VOLCANOBONE | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6/1 | KSparrow2 | 19.2% | R.Williams | 15% | 79.3 | 74.5 | 8 |
(THUNDER GULCH x DANEHILL x BLUE ENSIGN) Four wins in a row including a Graded race before a lackluster effort last time out in the MORE GLARE GII where she slipped to eighth. That was her first try at this distance and trainer KSparrow2 has to wonder about that. This trainer has a huge record for saddling winner so should get her back on track. Williams is in the saddle and more than capable. I look for a bounce back here.
| 7 – NOTHIN’ TO LOSE | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4/1 | Zewango3 | 12.4% | J.Dyson | 11% | 82.5 | 76.7 | 44 |
(LEMON DROP KID x DYNAFORMER x STORM BIRD) The top rated LEMON DROP KID rookie has two stakes wins to her credit in only four races. Add to that her maiden and Zewango3 has the makings of quite a special young lady. Her past two were around this distance and she had nice 80 plus SPFs. Teamed with jockey Dyson, this trio could be a formidable challenger in this race. This would be a great time for her to show the world she is ready to go.
Morning Line = 2-3-4-7-5
Yoss Tipsheet = 3-7-4-2
Paz Picks = 4-7-3-2
A fairly even race with some really nice looking fillies, I like EPIC DUEL to finish fourth. EL CAJON will have to overcome the distance and the jockey to finish higher than third. I would like to pick NOTHIN’ TO LOSE to win the race but would like to see how she does in Graded company first. I am putting VY THE QUARTERBACK at the top of my sheet and hope that she not only wins the race but inspires her namesake to excel on the football field as well!
Good luck to all runners!
