The Kids Come To Play?

(SP)Wyoming- Up this week is a two year old stakes race. I have to say at the out set that I am not a big fan of two year old stakes races. The simple fact there is no kind of regulation on these races and if a trainer has a two year old they can enter. I am of the old fashioned belief that a stakes race should be for horses of quality and as it stands now, some of these two year old stakes races are won with speeds so slow a plow horse could actually win. Just because a horse wins a maiden race does not automatically make them a superstar. Thankfully there are few two year old races here in Wyoming Well that was my little soapbox stand now on to the race.

Covering seven and a half furlongs on the turf this Saturday is the stakes race Doc’s Blade Memorial. This is the perfect horse for to be memorialized in this type of race. He only ran six times as a two year old, was able to win a stakes race but the overall performance was abysmal. So it looks like the WRC actually was able to get a naming race correct for a change and there is hardly a whisper from the WHOA on this one. It should be another fine autumn day with the right conditions for racing and hopeful the seven entrants will outdo themselves. So lets meet our seven entrants.

Rocka Bye Baby(AUS) entered by gavineades. This freshman Aussie has been solid after winning on his maiden race. He does seem to have a stamina problem but with more training a few more races under the saddle could corrected this. This will be his first foray on the grass and there is no telling what the outcome will be, but his sire seems to produce dirt runners so far.

Zippster entered by colt11. This freshman stays in Wyoming for his second race. Since he was able to win a maiden claimer at a walk, his is ready for the big times, right? That seems to be the thinking of this trainer. To help him along, he will be changing surfaces and having more ground added to up his chances for a win. It is great to have optimism, but I don’t know if fantasy is quite the same.

Mask Um(GB) entered by chubby12. This British chestnut comes in as a first time racer. What is there to say, the horse is an unknown. I prefer to talk about said horse not what their sire has done. At least the trainer is following the recent statistics for Kayf Tara and starting this son on the grass.

Lowlander(GB) entered by dawgpound. This freshman enters his first Black Tie event and is the odds on favorite. He has run two races and showed improvement even on loose turf. This could be an indication that he is working into his potential. So far he has shown a like for closing on the field and the extra ground could play into his hooves. Having the hot jockey John Dawg in the irons can only help.

Bel Air(AUS) entered by greyghost. The freshman has shown slight improvement since moving to the lawn a couple of races back. He seems to be developing into a stalker, but needs a little more experience to make his charge at the correct time. He enters this stakes hoping the third time is the winning number, maybe top jockey Jesse Sands will make the difference.

Nightmare Vision entered by charliefly. Lets hope the freshman’s name is not a premonition of things to come. At this point anything is possible as he is another one that comes into his first race. So far this year, the offspring of his sire are under performing. So the odds are stacked against him to buck the trend.

August Thunder entered by cms424. This freshman is also in his debut stakes race. He was moved to the turf last out and exploded for a win. He comes in with the best rated speed of the group, but was his last outing a flash in the pan? That question will be answered on Saturday when he comes out of the gates on the outside where he seems to do well.
