Fillies’ last chance before greeting elders

By ITCH

It’s getting to be that time of year.

Time for three-year-olds to handle the most natural of class jumps: facing their elders.

But not yet for the 13 trainers entered in Saturday’s

Casino’s NIPPON FLYER was a holy terror on the racetrack at age 2, winning no fewer than four non-graded sprint stakes on the dirt, the last several at short prices (no kidding.) She’s not having the same kind of success as a 3yo, winning only once in seven starts, that being three back at this exact class and distance. This filly looks bad in the Form despite her lofty No. 34 ranking because her last two races have been dismal. Just as casino surely thought he had watched her return to form with that aforementioned victory, she ran eighth and then tenth in her last two. The first misfortune was against Grade 3, and the last was shortening up to six furlongs. A generous handicapper might consider drawing a line through those last two and only considering the good run three back this class and distance. You can’t take a short price, though, because of her poor races in three of her last four. Casino might figure her out, though. This is an old-timey Sim veteran of some 131 victories and 856 starts. That’s 15 percent winners with 45 percent ITM. Solid numbers and no wonder with a quality filly like this in the barn.

It’s nice to see a contest barn have a quality filly like buzzfarm has with STROLLING FOR GOLD. This hyper-talented brown filly, who has earned nearly half a million on the track in only 18 starts, topped out at a huge 110 speed fig two back in winning her third straight non-graded stake, all at a half furlong farther than Saturday, or 7.5. Buzz apparently could not find a race for her that distance last out, and ran her at only 6 furlongs. Saturday’s distance suits her better, but checking her past results at this exact distance will not boost the confidence of her backers. She’s 0-4 at seven furlongs, albeit second once and third in a graded race, so it ain’t like she’s a slouch. She is a thunderous butt kicker at 7.5, and darn good at 7.

Might we have a horse for the Old Waterford course in woodlyns’ SHE DON GON, who local railbirds may remember from her score earlier this year in the Forty Even Handicap? That was back in March, when this offspring of the Grade C Sim horse GON WON earned her black type, adding further luster to the already brilliant Sim horse from which she was bred. Gon Won wasn’t running much by the time he retired, but boy, did he get ‘er done earlier in his career. This Gone West horse won no fewer than nine stakes for Woodlyns, all but one on the dirt, but one was on the turf, again only adding to his resume. Like Gon Won, She Don Gon also has proven versatile, winning at three different distances this year: 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5 furlongs. Gon Won could run all day, and this filly showed she might be able to do so as well, closing to be second last out going a flat mile. It would be no surprise at all to see this one in the mix at the wire.

Ladysiera7 brings loads of speed and class to the table with REGAL CAT, a chestnut daughter of the Forestry sire Teton Forest. This speedy little filly is by far the best offspring of the 16yo Grade H mare LA LIGHT, a daughter of Gone West who never broke her maiden. No matter her lack of racing record, there was plenty of blue blood for ladysiera7 to tap into there with the affordable sire Teton Forest, who was only 182 points as of Wednesday afternoon. (See there, I’m writing this week’s article earlier, ha ha.) This is easily the best Teton Forest in the Sim, having won $241,000 already, and the next best at only $74,000. Regal Cat may be as fast away from the gate as any fillies of her generation, having made the lead in no fewer than seven stakes races already, including the Grade 3 Warfare Farm Stakes last out, in which she held on to be third. This filly is likely to make the lead, and note those stakes victories earlier this year going seven furlongs and mile. She can get the distance, and makes her third start back of a layoff here. She should be sitting on a big race. The only problem is that Jocko Maloney is on board, and usually does not do well on speed horses. Still, 16-1 is silly and extremely enticing.

PUNCH DRUNK T for xtchamps could be one to pounce if for some reason REGAL CAT is not sitting on a big race as she appears to be. This light gray daughter of Two Punch has earned more than a quarter million in 20 starts, very classy work indeed. Indeed, she was not embarrassed at all two back in the Grade I Exam Stakes, finishing within five lengths of the lead in fifth, and beating nine other fillies in a Grade I race. Shortening up from seven furlongs to six last out, she broke slowly and nvever fired. This filly is versatile, having been second this year in a non-graded route stake and third in a six-furlong Grade 3. On the positive note, she earned her career-best speed fig at this exact distance, that being a 101 four back when third in a non-graded stake. This filly has a right to hit the board at least if not more, and the question is if a fairly rigorous ’06 campaign and a tough races two back in Grade I company have left any bullets in her gun. She’ll have to fire a fairly big shot to win here Saturday.

ARABIAN SUN(GB) also is approaching a cool quarter million for v8mullet. This daughter of Desert Sun out of the 12yo Grade H Mr. Propector mare HALO THE BUILDINGS, and is the second one to be stakes placed.. Oh, she’s better than stakes, placed, however. Arabian Sun is a three-time stakes winner and has been second in a Grade 3. She proved her versatility last out by running third in a stake on the grass, but returns to her usual surface Saturday. This filly could mean big trouble for Regal Cat on the front end, as she, too, is a proven classy frontrunner. Maybe we better back off that pick. This filly led a Grade 2 to the head of the lane four back at this distance. Might she jump forward on the turf-to-dirt angle? We will see.

A.P. SUPERWOMAN, as one might expect from a daughter of A.P. Indy, has just the right come-from-behind racing style to take advantage if Regal Cat and Arabian Sun duel each other into defeat. She has fired some big bullets speed figure-wise, posting two straight triple digit figs in winning three in a row recently. Probably the best argument in this filly’ls favor is that she is a very strong 4-5 lifetime at this exact distance. Only once has she lost at seven furlongs, and she could well be catching a favorable pace scenarious with potential dueling frontrunners to set up her late kick. Her best shot is very dangerous, and she earns additional respect from her barn. Vampire2 is a successful Sim veteran, having bagged 105 wins from only 551 starts, a healthy 19 percent strike rate.

Zooom was looking to tap into the brilliance of Danzig when he bred FOOSHI KOOCHI, a son of Fusaichi Pegasus with Danzig as the DS and Secretariat as the DDS. Even with that inbreeding to Danzig, this horse has yet to try the grass. She has run all 13 of her career races on the dirt. Some trainers like to experiment; others are less adventuresome and go with what works. Zooom has liked what he’s seen on the dirt from Fooshi Koochi, and why not? She won her first two races in a row on the dirt, at the disparate distances of 5 furlongs and a flat mile, no less. Despite that auspicious debut, Fooshi Koochi was surprisingly unable to thrive in stakes competition, finshing out of the exacta in all of her first eight stakes tries. She was third several times, though, and moved up to second two back when she caught a short field of four two back. She was badly beaten last out when running too far and too high in class, in a 9-furlong Grade I. Even if we draw a line through that race, there are others in here who look better and have much better stakes chops, as it were. Now watch her go.

Unlike most of Wassie’s stock, INDY AWARD BG has not been a horse for the West Virginia course so far in her young career. This brown daughter of Academy Award is a two-time stake winner, but has found herself lapsing into a bad form cycle in the five races since her most recent stakes score. It was on May 27 that Indy Award BG bested a field of six going a mile in a Pennsylvania overnighter. In five races since, the best she could manage was a third in a restricted allowance going only 4.5 furlongs. The speed figs have been a bit subpar, and it must be reported that she’s never gone as fast as a 90 in her career. Many others in here have run faster than that, so it’s gonna take an ace up Wassie’s sleeve I am not seeing for this filly to score.

FANTASMIC for alphonso comes in a little light on stakes points with only two career victories, but stacks up speed-figure wise with these as she’s stepped it up to a 96 and a 93 in her last two. The pace scenario is going to present a special challenge to this daughter of Unbridled’s Song, as she figures to be up front, but with two raging speedballs qualifying ahead of her. She’s yet to show the ability to pass horses, and it’s hard to see her breaking in front of either Regal Cat or Arabian Sun. Of course, Jocko Maloney always could screw it up and strangle Regal Cat, but that still leaves at least Arabian Sun in front of this fillly early. If she hits the board, she is really showing me something.

MARTHA stretches out a little bit here for theprofit9, unable to handle stakes class in her last two, both at 6.5 furlongs, while sixth both times. A chestnut daughter of Unbridled’s Risk, Martha has been stakes placed, in her third career start, but has been a notch below stakes company since. Humbled in a Grade I to conclude her juvenile campaign, theprofit9 raced her mostly in allowance company to start the year. When she cleared a second condition with a nice 99 speed fig for a big purse in Florida three back, it was time to jump into stakes competition, an experiment which continues here. One thing worth noting is that her two recent sixth place stakes finishes both were on off tracks. She also backed up badly in that aforementioned Grade I that was on the slop. Let’s just say she ain’t a mudder and might like the dry track on Saturday. She’s a maybe on trifecta tickets for creative handicappers.

JUNGLE MIESQUE TOS for flurgen4 only has three stakes points, and as such you might think she should be considered an outsider on that fact alone. Speed figure handicappers are going to find that fat 100 last out awful enticing, though, are they not? The lack of stakes points is deceptive, because this filly won a stake and was second in another as a 2yo. She showed her class four back when able to press the pace in second in a Grade 3 before fading to fourth. It’s kind of weird to say, but the best horses in this race don’t have a huge advantage in this race classwise over this filly. She has the right to run well at this class, having done so before and held her own against better. Can she accelerate and pass horses while shortening up? That might be the real question.

Louisiana Lenny13 is emptying the barn out Saturday afternoon, with no fewer than seven of 10 horses in the barn going postward in 2986. Fair to say that Lenny13 might be a good partner in the 3-man this week. As regular participants in that competition know, you’re looking to have a chance in as many categories as you can, and Lenny is taking a shot here with SKYSWEEPER. This brown daughter of Awesome Again, out of lenny’s Grade G Kingmambo mare TASMANIAN MICA II, has only four lifetime starts, conceding a big experience edge to her opponents. I’m not trying to talk you off this filly, however. No way. We like the lightliest horse in races, and this one has not had the wear and tear of many others in here. She’s also run very fast, with speed figures of 96 and 100 in her last two at this exact distance. It is quite possible that the other 12 trainers entered here may be hating Lenny at about 12:05 p.m. Saturday.

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!!!!!
