I had mentioned in my preview that I thought that A. CONTENDER would win the eighth leg of the OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN series. For once this old handicapper had it right as the often near-miss old guy who seems to usually shoot blanks had his pistol powered up and held off some of the other old codgers to not only win the race but also put himself in contention to win the whole shooting match! He was able to move into fourth place for the series but with the top three horses unable to race unless our host MEAT LOAF LOOP wins the ninth and next to last race in the series, he is the only other horse with a chance to win unless “Meaty” himself would win the final two races. If A. CONTENDER , who has “contended” throughout the series can finish second next race and win the final, he will be the Old Man of the Mountain series Champion and garner all of the accolades that come with that. Certainly a nice thing to hang on your wall at the Old Horses Retirement Home!
A new entrant to the series BIZARRE SALMON started the race like it was breeding season and he needed to get upstream. He eventually ran out of steam and finished a respectable fourth. That left it up to our three geezers who hit the board, the winner along with both PRINCE JERRY and BROTHER METRO , who all looked like they wanted to be the first one in the line at the Social Security window. In the end A. CONTENDER had just enough to hold them off but was sure glad that the race wasn’t a few paces longer. This makes the last couple of races interesting to see if he can pull out the series win.
For the sixth consecutive race, our host MEAT LOAF LOOP ended up being a good host and letting someone else win as he finished seventh with a rather apathetic performance. Because he didn’t win this time, that means the next race will still be an allowance for NW2y and that counts out our Series leaders, RASPUTIN and DEPUTY WOOD along with third place holder EMINENT MINSTREL unless “Meaty” can win again. There are now only two races left in the ten race series and lots of things can happen including quite a few heart attacks and strokes among the participants, so it should be interesting down the road. That’s what makes this series so much fun. It is coming down to the wire and the most interesting thing that could happen would be if MEAT LOAF LOOP could pull out one more win and we would have five horses within a couple of points heading into the final race in week 3007.
