Sister Dew earns Black Type in Maine
With a field of well bred and reasonably evenly matched juveniles, all vying for that first black type victory, the race was not just for the prizemoney on offer, but also the guarantee of future broodmare value which comes with stakes success. Of the seven contestants racing this weekend, the first to join that exclusive club is Sister Dew, following her impressive performance in The Light Locking Stakes.
Westward Bound won the jump from the four gate, with Rock Solid Star also quickly away. Dearest Debbie obtained an early position on the rail with Sister Dew outside her. Quiet Nights settled next from Attentionarian, and as expected, Concentrated dropped out.
Westward Bound looked to be traveling comfortably in the lead, having been let to run along in front from the outset, but as they rounded the turn the pressure began to be applied. Rock Solid Star was closing the gap, and Sister Dew was giving chase simultaneously. Dearest Debbie was putting in her effort, but unable to match the other two who had caught the early leader. Into the stretch and it was Sister Dew with the most in the tank, as McClendon ranged his mount up on the outside of Rock Solid Star, who had temporarily gained the ascendancy. At the wire and Sister Dew had powered home with a comfortable three quarters of a length to spare.
Rock Solid Star had tried valiantly and better things are surely in store for her.
Dearest Debbie ran the race right out, missing second by just half a length.
Westward Bound battled on well to hold down fourth.
Quiet Nights briefly looked some sort of chance at the top of the running, but the effort was short lived.
Concentrated failed to reproduce her usual finish.
Attentionarian was outclassed
