The Breeding Corner

Service Stripe (5715)

Deputy Minister has been one of my favorite sires. Over the next few weeks we will be taking a look at sons of Deputy Minister that are not real expensive and potentially can produce nice sim runners. First up is Service Stripe and he in many ways is like a young Slew City Slew. Service Stripe stands for a cheaper price but seems to produce at a much higher level.

Real Life- Service Stripe is by Deputy Minister. His dam sire is Blushing Groom (FR) and his dam’s dam sire is Iron Ruler. He has a very nice pedigree with solid stamina. Service Stripe’s dosage index is 2.60. On the track he was a solid consistent runner. He was a two time stakes winner although they were very cheap listed stakes wins. Looking at his over all record with ten wins from twenty two starts is very solid.

His real life production is off to a very solid start. His best runner to date is the late Cashier’s Dream  who died of an intestinal ailment midway through her three year old season. She was a great two year old winning two graded stakes and running second in two others including a couple of grade I race. She was a graded winner at three as well.

He has sired seven stakes winners from his first three crops getting 22% stakes horses from starters. Besides Cashier’s Dream his stakes winners have not had much impact on graded races. However they all seem to have longer consistent careers. Secret Romeo – 50-23-14-2, Born to Dance 34-11-7-7, Tank Grrrl 35-7-5-5, Deputy Stripe 24-9-4-2, and he has a sharp two year old I had the pleasure of watching a few times at Lone Star this year Miss Mary Pat who took the top two stakes for two year old fillies at Lone Star this year.

In real life inbreeding to Nasrullah in the fifth generation of his offspring appears a couple of times. Also his pedigree sets up well for inbreeding to Northern Dancer 4X4 which is apparent in his two year old Miss Mary Pat. Monetary Gift has been a top dam sire producing four winners from four foals with one stakes winner, Cashier’s Dream. Monetary Gift is from the Damascus line and looks to blend well here.

Sim Life – Service Stripe has thirty-eight sim runners. He has two stakes winners among the thirty-eight active runners. He has another stakes winner that is retired. One won on dirt the other two on the turf. He produces well on both surfaces getting solid runners. He also produces sprinters and horses capable of going long. He has been bred to a couple of top notch dam sires but mostly cheaper ones.

He has just five two year olds so far this year and one of those is a  two time stakes winner and is graded placed after debuting in a $2,500 maiden claimer. She is the only winner among the five so far but the others seem solid enough to this point. He is a good producer of two year old runners in real life so no real surprise to see him with a stakes winner here. Both of his current stakes winners are inbred to Northern Dancer.

Breeding Suggestions –  Service Stripe has a very nice pedigree that can produce in many different ways. Inbreeding to Northern Dancer is angle that seems very prudent. Crossing him with Mr. Prospector line sires would also seem a solid angle. Seattle Slew is another solid choice of dam sire line that will blend well.

I like the Bold Ruler line sires to add Nasrullah to the pedigree. Buckpasser, Ribot, In Reality, all are solid choices. I like the way the Damascus line seems to fit with Service Stripe and so I would give his sons and grandsons a long look.

4X3 inbreeding to Northern Dancer has worked well in the sim however I am more a fan of 4X4 inbreeding. So I would look for grandsons of Northern Dancer in the dam sire spot or sons of Northern Dancer in the dam’s dam sire spot. Hard to go wrong with some of the big name grandsons of Northern Dancer like Storm Cat, or Summer Squall. I also like Louis Quatorze and Langfuhr.

From the Damascus line Crusader Sword, Cutass, Desert Wine, Eastern Echo, Ogygian, Private Account, and Timeless Moment. I really like Boston Harbor from the Seattle Slew line of sires and Septieme Ciel.

Service Stripe (5715) X Langfuhr (3418) X Damascus (1457)

Service Stripe (5715) X Jade Hunter (3112) X Gold and Myrrh (2469)

Service Stripe (5715) X Relaunch (5255) X Storm Bird (6271)

Service Stripe (5715) X Boston Harbor (772) X Seeking the Gold (5687)

Bargain Bred – Service Stripe is one of those sires that right now sets up for great bargain breeding. He gets down into the mid 30’s at the end of the week which means you can pair him with solid inexpensive dam sires.

Service Stripe (5715) X Crusader’s Sword (1412) X Plugged Nickle (4837)

Service Stripe (5715) X Deposit Ticket (1595) X Jeblar (3137)

What to Expect – Service Stripe runners can be anything. He should produce solid to good two year olds. He can produce well on both surfaces although dirt is probably his best. He can produce runners that can run short or long. Be sure to move your Service Stripe runner to different distances and surfaces before giving up on him.
